paint is the one thing a lot of us can't do on our own so it's expensive. Not all hotrods have paint to me a ratrod is some peice of **** that is not safe to be on the road.

A rat rod is an unsafe, cobbled together piece of ****. A hot rod without shiney paint is a masterpiece in progress.

I'd rather see a "rat rod" that someone has put into it the time, effort, and is safe to drive, over a store-bought, checkbook-written, "call me when the car is finished" rod any day! Paint is just that - paint!

I agree that rat rods are unsafe pieces of ****. I just dont see how a patina looks bad if it is aged beautifully. However there isnt many that are aged that way though.

Guess the sentiment: "Kiss my ***, paint-and-billet checkbook rodders!" can hold just as much, if not more, weight, huuh?

yes paint is nice, but i feel a true hot rod built with decent orig semi untouched body and parts is way better than any paint job.. call it a rat rod. i dont care.. now kiss my ***.

I definitely prefer a sweet paint job and it is the final beautiful touch when the time comes. But honestly, a lot of paint jobs from the 80's and 90's are still giving the hot rod name a black eye to this day. So, paint is only good in the proper hands and let's not forget, paint has been used to cover up a lot of bad work too.

I like shiny paint and I paint my own vehicles, but I can also appreciate a well built, safe primer rod also, beats the **** out of billet kit cars.

WTF? How many guys in the 50's & 60's could afford paint? Most ran primer or used what ever **** they could brush on.

I built mine the way that the body was found in the barn, because I won't pay the BIG $$$ it takes these days. Besides, this rod has been more fun than ANY shined up car I have ever owned!!!

Try it, you'll NEVER have to worry about parking lot dings again!

I wonder how long before this is locked? For the most part rat rods are not popular here with anyone.

Perhaps the problem is that 40pickup doesn't really know what a rat rod is. My car aint pretty but it's solid and safe. If 40pickup has a couple G's he wants to give up, I'd be happy to paint it.

I can remember buying materials to paint a car for $100 or less. I talked to a guy who has had his car in his garage for 3 years because he couldn't afford to paint it like he wanted. It runs. I dunno why it's still in the garage even after talking to him.

  19. I agree, my dad tells stories of how he primered cars with a vacuum cleaner. I have hot rods with nice paint, but my family enjoys the rusty crusty Model A we built ourselves from scratch more the the others. To each there own. I can paint it but its only original once.

There is a BIG difference between a car needing paint and showing its original paint (or lack of it) versus a body full of rust holes that truly looks like ****. You priced a paint job these days? I sure as hell don't feel like shooting a car - paint work, to me, is NOT entertaining, relaxing, or particularly desirable, depending on what the car looks like at the start of the project. Obviously, you think that if a car is not all one color and looks like it can roll off any show field with a first place trophy, it must be a POS "rat rod". Am I wrong in this ****ysis of your statement, forty???

I'll walk over to the guy with the rolling project and talk to him/her about their car, over a $100K billet "beauty" that the owner had no hand in building, other than approving the color combo and installing the obligatory billeted SBC 350.

but 60 some odd years ago the cars where rust buckets. The stock paint was only 20-30 years old.

Yep, seen a lot of rust poppin through shinny paint. Yea, and whats with the at***ude and the black primer truck? If you want to show off your new paint, just post the pics. Don't trash on others choices. I paint what needs paintin and run the rest without!

some people just dont get it. theres a BIG difference between a hunk of rusted **** thats glued together with a cheap mig welder.... and a unpainted rod. i actually would rather see the work in the car stand out than the shiny paint job. but thats me. pinkees rods before paint is the jam up for me. some of them even after paint. "rootbeer"

i do agree about the unsafe cars out there. thats trash not tradition. tv babies! i dont think they had grandpas. sad.

Hmmmm.....Some guys are good with motors...some are good with frames...some are good body men...some are good upholsterers...and some are good painters. But not too many are good at everything.

So when it comes to painting, would it be better to use a spray can of red or orange to make it a better ride to take out into public?

We used to call that a DUPONT Overhaul. Would you buy a ride based on the paint job?
