I have some old cans of Valvoline oil. Also some Getty Oil same type of cans as the Valvoline pictured below. Have about 10 cans of the stuff ranging from 20w to 40w and Getty HD. Is the stuff bad? Id recycle it if it is.
Shouldn't be. I asked the same thing a while back, I have 5 quarts of 10W30 I found forgotten in one of my old cars from about 10 years back, consensus was to use it and not even worry to save it for an engine break in (since it still would have zinc in it).
Had a couple of cans of Penzoil and a couple of Quaker State That I opened recently. The Penzoil seemed ok but the Quaker State was like trying to pour grease through a straw. We didn't think oil would go bad until then.
That's just plain bad advice. There is a huge difference between what come sout of the ground and what you buy in the store. Refining & additives make it a whole other ball game. I'd say selling it to a collector is the way to go. The additives may have settled out of the oil or gone bad along with other issues. The good thing is it has zinc in it. Is it worth the chance?
About 15 years ago I had some Havoline oil in the cardboard cans. It was sitting on a garage floor for several years. The bottom cans had somehow got water in them and were nasty......of course I saw it as I was pouring it in the engine The cans had gone through a minor 1" flood caused by a frog strangler type rain.
