Well I tore down the little pumping unit that propells my Henry-J and didn't number the lifters-----------------

Can I install the old ones and break them in as new ones with the inner valve springs removed or am I buying a new set of lifters ????????

Solid lifters, solid Clay Smith cam!!

Four and a half weeks(till MOKAN) and it is crunch time!! AHHHH!!!!

    I wouldn't.

They were wear mated to the lobes they rode on.

Braking in a Cam with all new parts is tricky enough.

    I'd replace the Lifters...

Well, you might get lucky and they'll work for years. The smart money is on a new set, though. And yes, if you reduce the stress (spring pressure) for a while, it might help. If the cam is a hard-to-find item, I wouldn't mess with it, I'd get new lifters.

If you have a good cam grinding co. near you they can resurface the face of those lifters like new for a very minimal price. Check it out!!!

I fell on my head at the age of four when I fell off a MINI ROD (pullin tractor) and got four teen s***ches on my forhead from the engine stand holding up a blown, injected, alky, 426 HEMI that was getting ready to be installed in the MINI ROD!!!!!!! NO ****Y LIE!!!! And yes I have been like this ever since but still I need to know if I made a $100 screw up????

    Thanks any way T Man!!!

Invest in a new set of lifters--and make sure to add a good cam lube as new oil has no zinc--black bottle of the Crane stuff works well--don't take a chance

Very cool story 'bout the engine stand!!!!! ---- makes damn good bench racing anyways......

Topic at hand........YES, If it was my race car, I'd insist on buying new lifters....100 dollars is nothing in comparison to a good run! --- lets think about this for a minute...........

Even with new lifters on an old cam it is still possible to wipe out a cam lobe, or two, or more.

    Buy new lifters.

Or, buy new lifters and a new cam.

It Was broke in, but that means nothing with a set of used lifers that got mixed up...

$100 is spent but is it lost anyway cause of the screw up????

Good site for the oil, is this somthing you have used or do you know someone in the company??? Just a little shy of "new" oil products. Never heard of it. Is it similar to the purple stuffff?? I have heard of the higher zinc oil being break in oil, will this be my best protection from the cam-break in boogie man???

No experience with the purple stuff.

But I have a lot of faith in this brand.

I've only used one brand of oil for at least 20 years,
but I've recently switched to Brad Penn.

From what I've heard its not really new, its a proven Racing Oil with a new name...

not new at all,actually...it comes from one of the oldest oil wells in the united states. I thought Brad Penn was a person, but apparently, it is short for bradenton (? bradley...don't remember) Pennsylvania.

    I read the box.:D

  23. I wouldn't rock the same lifters, but............ if the lifters are as old as that cam, they may be of better quality than the **** offered today and endure the mistake. Years ago, this kid in the neighborhood used to change the cam in his mom's Camaro once a month for the longest time. All the while, using the SAME set of lifters over and over. No break-in, nothing. So..............................R U feelin lucky? New ****ty/Chinese(?) lifters may be worse

Figure 8 them on a plate of gl*** and some 320-400 grit paper put them in with the intake off mark the lifters with a sharpie on the top where you can see the line, put a matching line on the lifter bore with a sharpie so the 2 line up,set the lash on all 16 by spinning the motor over 2 revs the lifters should spin at least a 1/4 of turn, the ones that dont swap them for ones that spin more than 1/4 .This method has always worked for me.another.02

Not the $100's that is the problem, but the solution without screwing up the cam is the issue... I don't wipe my *** with $100 bills but the couple of grand I have in it serves well as a reminder not to go cheap!!!!!!!!!!

Figure eight,,,,, HUMMMM!!! Still, new lifters seams the safe bet!!!!!!
