  1. Hahaha. A 440? Yah, I guess anything can "fit" with a whole lot of cutting and rengineering. A 273 or 318 from a mid 60's Mopar is about the only thing you can swap in there without having to cut anything.

Check out my page http://shadowmtkustomz.blogspot.com/ to see how it can be done.

Good luck, I hope you can get it.

    Update us when you do.

    Your link no worky:(
as far as stuffing my 440 into it..i really wouldnt do that unless i was going to keep it..because the 440 i got is worth way more than that entire car..i could be happy with a 318 in there..thanks for the heads up on the fit issue (didnt open the hood)
if the guy thinks its a gold mine , Ill let him stay trapped undergound:eek:
i got enough shit to keep me buisy until i die.
but on the other hand my daughter will be driving in like 5 years..she would love to have it..(at least thats what she says now)..we'll see
i just need to find out who owns it. me and the family will be out crusing in the chevy this weekend..we'll stop on by it a few times to see whats up

Hey Randy, I see that you've managed to find another treasure. Your latest is a duplicate of the car my grandmother had when I was young.. I've always thought that one of those would make a super "odd rod". I can picture it sitting on a slight rake, mini-tub to accomodate some wide tires, your 440 or a hemi and a 4 speed. Can you say sleeper?:)
Oh yea an updated front suspension and disc brakes would be a must. Keep us updated on your decision to get it.

Frank as you know it..im always hunting..even if i dont kill the prey..its fun to stalk.
as me and my girls cruse around we rubber neck to see what we can find, talk to people we meat and the coversations always come back to old cars. It was great to meet you and your wife, and hope to see you in the future.
your vision and mine for this ol 49 was very close (great minds think alike--sometimes)
If the price is right it will get bought and i will squirrel it away until i have the time..the 28 A has to be next. Its one of those I have wanted a long time so i need to keep focused.
Maybe if I get it and its not to hard to get it up and running as a stocker i might spend a few weekends on it to have a beater..and make a solid plan for it when my girl grows up a little.
I will come back to this thread what ever decission is made, or if my prey escapes..I have known about this car for over 2 years..(knew where it was) but in the last 9 months to a year have seen it just sit and sit..it just makes me wonder WTF is up with that? maybe someone lost interest? ..need to keep hunting for the owner.
going to polish up my cross hairs!

I'm with you on that! A sixty year old two door ANYTHING in that condition has to be worth something. Look at the brightwork. How much for bumpers in that shape? Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see any rust, dents, cracked windows, dimpled stainless, or missing pieces. I'd be surprised if it doesn't run. I'd say if you've the change and your daughter likes it, you could do a lot worse for two grand.

i was thinking ..if i got the 218 running..and made it "reliable"..what a hell of a cool first car for her..shes big time into this cool car thing..at least for now..shes definetly daddys girl and will hopefully always have a soft spot in her heart for the cool old cars (as she calls em, or hot rods) she knows the difference. it will not be some barn burner and thats just fine with me. Hell she was the one who found my Model A.
maybe as she needs a more modern car , she could still keep this one around for her "project"

The 440 will only fit with a bunch of modification, ask me how I know.

cool car! get the address and go to the county offices and look up the owner on the tax roster, its public record. i used to sit by the mail box of the house where i found cars and wait for the mailman to come by because they usually have a pretty good idea what is going on with the car and who owns or lives in house. scored a 60' impala convertable from a woman cheap because her old man had run off with his BOYFRIEND! i'll let you guess how cheap the car was. lol!

I've got the dodge version of this plymouth, the dodge is called a wayfarer, mine has been modified slightly and is making a heck-of-a car.

  14. I looked at getting one of those out in Taylor, it had no glass but was pretty decent, $500 obo. I think stuffing a V8 in one (I had visions of Poly) is more work than it's worth... maybe find a OHV six of some type (cough, Chevy, AMC, Cough) that would fit better and slam it and roll with it. That body style just doesn't scream "fast" to me... is it one of the ones with the cool, clear "ship" hood ornament?

Now you're talking. These are great engines. They're reliable, very smooth and reasonably powerful as is. All parts are readily available as are some nice goodies for them. Brand new dual intakes, dual exhaust manifolds or even tube headers are also available. I hope you can get it and also hope you'll stick with that sweet six.

I think they're called a Plymouth Concord which was equivalent to the Dodge Wayfarer. I always thought they were a pretty cool looking car and wouldn't mind having one. Saw one a few months ago that was pretty much stock with original paint and it had been lowered and looked really good.

  17. It doesn't look bad in the pictures, the price is less than my guides say, but if it needs a repaint offer less. It looks like it wouldn't take much to make a driver out of it just the way it is, although who knows what shape the engine is in.

    But -

We have two of those damned things - one complete car out of a barn that needs floors and rockers, but really isn't that bad, and another one that a guy parted out for a custom - it's a solid body on a rolling chassis, was a drivable car before the guy started, everything missing a 4-door parts car would cure (hood, one fender, grille, engine, trans, some interior stuff). Can't even get scrap money for either one. Have been thinking about finding a good photo of a Lee Petty car and using it to paint some numbers on one of them - he competed in these Plymouths when he started out, I think he did well just by lasting to the finish of some of the races. The paint isn't even bad on the parted out car, it has both doors and all the glass in it, but the guy had a car that was already chopped.. I think maybe it was done way back when and the car developed some rot since... he used most of the front end of this car and the one fender he did leave has a patch cut out of it, that you probably could make in 5 minutes out of another piece of tin.

    Go figure -

Yep Jay..AKA Riley Racing..it has one of those "Ship" hood ornaments..its not in bad condition either..top side looks good..with it sitting on stone for so long i winder what the bottom looks like..Stone is one of the worst things you can set a car on for storage..it just holds the moisture and allows it to hang around for so long after the rain ..worried about lower body and frame rust damage..brake components rusted out and al whole lot of other stuff.

    How ya been Jay?

it's only worth what your willing to pay for it. start low, you can always work your way up. i'd ask him what he wants, before makin' an offer. i've been surprised by what i've heard.keep us posted.

Well dudes and dudetts..The guys must be smokin crack or something like that..
The engine is not running, the brakes are shot, all the tires are shot, seats are shot and the interior door panels are in need of being redone as is the headliner.
Its been sitting for many many years in that same spot (on gravel) i was too scared to look up under it fearing severe frame rot..

Anyways back to the guys asking price..$4500..firm..

I decided to just bid him a friendly fairwell..more than likely, thats why its been sitting there going to shit in a tin cup..
shame too because it would be a good thing to get it out and get it back to running..probably in another 5 years it will be a pile of rusty dust for 4grand..
Maybe hes been watching B.J. too much:eek:

besides ..I dont know what i was thinking..Ive got an A to build..nuff "F"ing around

That sucks, but then again, it doesn't. Everything happens for a reason!

  23. That's a bit high for a car needing much work...IMHO.
FYI, the car is a 1949 Plymouth Deluxe two door sedan, model P17.
In 49 there was also Special Deluxe, the fancier model. This body style
    only came in Deluxe.

They can be made into a rather nifty ride.

  25. Unless it saw salt the frame probably is not bad, but if you do decide to look, we have a rough as all hell '54 ragtop and the frame is just plain gone between the rear spring perches, that's where I'd look first.

But I think the thing to do here is make a reasonable cash offer - like $1000-$1500 for it - write it on a card with your number, and give it to them. And make sure not to tie up your phone lines too much until around April 15th of next year. Odds are they may look at the card and decide how much that would help them with Christmas or the tax bill (income, or property/school tax, if they do that in your state) and away you go.

In fact if it was me I'd look up what the property is assesed at and if it was close to what the car is worth, I'd make that my offer price.

I would, but it aint worth the trouble for me. Its obvious this guy is wanting too much for this..thats why its been sitting there like this for so long. No one in their right mind would part with that much green for that. unless they HAD to have it. Up here in michigan they dont have to be driven to rust up..if they are sitting out (this one has been) and sitting on gravel it will not be long before all this will be is a nice looking body and than 5 years after that it will be complete shit.
I talked directly to the owner..he wants to finance something with the sale of the car but has his value out of proportion. Thats ok I was only interested in it if the price was right. I need another project like i need a shot to the balls:eek:
Obvioulsy last tax season didnt motivate him to sell it, and the tax season before that..I would venture a guess that this car hasent been driven in over 5 years. If anyone on here has to have it and wants to deal with this guy I will be glad to hook them up with the location. Ive got to keep my prioraties on Building my model A so im not even going to spend another minute on this. :D

    I have a 51 Plymouth Concord...really similar car, but its a 2 door fastback.
I bought it for $3500, nicely restored ~10 years ago in reliable daily driver condition.

    Wow..thats nice..
    and for 3500..you did good..
yeah i quietly walked away from it..its been a michigan car for over 10 years ..or more..and theres no way i was going to spend 4500 on a car I knew I would have to redo all the running gear on. just aint worth it,, besides i could sink that 4500 into my A project and be way more happy.

ya I agree...that sounds like a better plan.
I'm all for projects, but it sounds like in that condition he should be asking a quarter of what he is!
