August Hartkopf showed up at the 1963 NASCAR drags at Daytona. Pulled the white 56 with a 59 or 60 white El-Camino. 6 carbs and a ton of rpms. Is he still around ?

Wow this thread just gets better and better and to think Ryan was going to close it 'cause people were hitting the veiw all button (so don't do that boys and girls !) And don't ask me how many pages back that was , but I,m not makin' it up !

3. Not a car picture but I think it fits in light of the current fuel situatiun and shortened 1000' races.

4. When the boat nearly killed him, the recuperation probably took a good amount of his time.

5. Wow, Never thought we'd hear from you personally. I have to say I LOVE that car. Very nice! I saved the pictures off of www.wediditforlove.com site back some six or seven years ago. It was the link you've shown below I think.

So what sort of chute were you running? It seems so many of the chute packer bodies were made for the smaller newer simpson chutes. I've got a thing for ring-slots and ribbons.

Kerry,
Thanks.
Truthfully . . . I cannot remember exactly what type chute we had on the Cupit & Cunningham car!! <grin> It was a Simpson and the same size that everyone had in '65. Terry always gathered up and packed the chute himself. I did everything else!! LOL
Check out two very short videos of a mini-cackle on 80%, I held 3 weeks ago in Baton Rouge for my sponsor to see my UNFINISHED car:

You guys may not belive me but, Garlits took me for a slow ride in Ohio George's 34 ford. When Gar purchased the car it had not seen daylight in 30 years. Since I was the shop "kid" I had to get it ready for the museum. The detail in that car was incredible. Every thing that George made for that car has his initials stamped in it.

There are several old racers in the car club here that talk about "Hands" from back in the day. Said he could palm a slick in each hand, and broke many a steering wheel shfting. Anyone from the Houston area remember a 57 chevy sedan delivery running in a stock class with a 2X4 283 and a pontiac (or olds) hyrdromatic? Jerry Davis and Pete Bonderant?

Too cool!!!

I'm putting a 120" Dragmaster flavored digger together with a spare 354. She probably won't tech at an NHRA track but I intend to run her. Sure wish I could have lived back when this was all happening for real.

PLEASE!!! My DADDY was MR CUPIT.
I'm "Glenn".

Attached "in motion" photo was Terry Cunningham's biggest drag racing thrill! He is beating Art Malone at the 1965 AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Art was world champion in 1964. We set low qualifying time of the meet on Sunday . . . 7.43. AHRA Record was 7.47. We were the only Chevy in the top 16. That's our claim to fame. No other Chevy went that quick in 1965. Shubert-Herbert went faster at 201. We went 200.??. They were the World's FASTEST Chevy, by a mile or so. We were the World's QUICKEST Chevrolet.

17. May I ask for an off topic picture? Who has pics of the MOB car? Didn't it run against some dragsters before it got ruled out? Take me back to elementary school library days with the guys fighting over the latest HOT ROD Magazine.
Hats off to Ryan and to our librarians.

18. This is a bit off of the picture aspect of this thread but could you tell us some speed secrets about the tuneup you used?

20. Once again, the "FNG" handle seems a bit out of place. Welcome aboard!

I know what you mean. Seems like there are a few that should be promoted to Legend status.

I have no idea where the "FNG" came from?
I signed up 2 days ago with my name - no handle??
Help?

24. It confused me too at the begining. Been racing since 61, but I was FNG too. It's a HAMB deal. As you make more posts, your status changes. You will go from FNG to Newbie, then Gernade Inspector (what ever that means) as I am now. As I realized, the FNG has nothing to do with your experience in the sport.

25. Join the Alliance and the FNG will vanish>>>>.

Kerry,
I was a Chevrolet Factory Service Rep in Dallas and then worked for a Chevrolet dealer in New Orleans as Service Manager. Terry Cunningham was the Sales Manager. We had no sponsors, worked 40 hrs @ week, then on the car at nights, raced on Sunday.
In 1964, I won the Green Valley AHRA Nationals in B/GS with a Henry-J, B&M Hydrostick, 337 cu in blown small block. Then moved back to Nawlins, took the motor out and went in partners with Terry on the AA/FD in late '64. Changed nozzles and cam and went fuel racin'! Later in '65 went to the stroked 383.
We had $6000 TOTAL in our car . . enclosed trailer(bought from Garlits for $600), spare short block, blower, pair of slicks & wheels. We won $4500 in 1965. Terry & I made under $800 a month each, were both married with kids. We were 27. The time of our lives, which I'm re-living now with my cackle car! I am not a spectator and only went to 3-4 drag races in 40 years. Got involved with hydroplane racin', was always the wrench.

This was my set-up: 327 block, Milodon full main girdle, Milodon oil pump & pick up, Crankshaft Co super light crank, chrome-moly rods, copper o-ringed block, Isky 550 ("Super LeGuerra") gear drive (reverse rotation) roller cam, high rev kit, mousetrap springs on roller rockers, Mondello '64 F I 'Vette heads (2.020 in, 1.625 ex), ForgeTrue 7:1 pistons, SS Dykes top rings, Weiand 6-71 blower manifold & drive, Stock GMC 6-71 blower clearanced by myself (nothing special), Hilborn 2-port, 150 pump.
None of the small block fuelers in my area could pull that cam in high gear. I knew that when I put the cam in. The only thing I did that they didn't know about was that I advanced the cam 8 degrees and opened up the valve lash +.003 on in & ex. Most all the other Chevy fuelers were running the blower @ 1:1. I decided to try 18% overdrive, like the Chryslers were running. I figured my motor was only 9 cu in smaller than the 392's, so I should need the same boost they had? Well, I lucked onto a combination that really eorked for us.
The motor set-back, power, tires all worked in our favor. Car weighed 1175-1200 lb.
Remember, this was the time BEFORE burnouts, slipping clutches, good tires, VHT prepared tracks, and long wheelbase diggers.
To hook-up these cars required that you smoke 'em at least 1/3 the way down, with the tires still slipping somewhat through the eyes. The Chryslers were arguably makin' 1500 hp on 90%. I figure we were makin' 1000 on 25%. Once you could spin 'em through the lights, it wasted energy to "overspin" "em, even though those smoky runs LOOKED good. We beat many Chryslers who smoked 'em all the way while we pulled them bad and won.
Sorry for the long dissertation.
I hope I'm not duplicating many photos?? I can't remember what ones I sent?? <grin> It's my CRAFT.

What's the "Alliance"?
Glenn

29. Welcome Mr. Glenn.thanks Royal. Go back to the top of the page and click on the alliance. I'm really digging the stories your posting. I like the fact that back when you were racing and having a great deal of success that it was a time when you could think your way into the winners circle as today it's all about corporate dollars. I can say I admire your accomplishments>>>>.
