What is the most sought after early Ford rim?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by PunkRodder, Jul 19, 2008.

  1. Kelsey Hayes Accessory Wheel - 18x3.62. I don't currently have a part number but do know that they were made and have seen pics of several over the years. Like the more commonly seen (if you can call any of them common!) 8 spoke 18x3.62 KH Accessory Wheel, they went by several names - Milk Truck Wheel, Desert Wheel, High Clearance Wheel, depending on who you ask and what they are into (restorers tend to use "Desert Wheel").

And DIVCOs NEVER came equipped with these wheels - I'm still trying to figure out how that ***ociation ever came to be

Guess I've been proven wrong :D So many people call em Divco's I just ***umed...kinnda makes sense but I did a little research and most had "Bud" style wheels.
So, my appologys, and now everytime I see an old Divco in a field I won't have to slam on the brakes and flip around ;)

Thanks! I was not aware that Kelsey Hayes made them. That should certainly help my quest!

  4. Were Kelsey spoked wheels only made in 16x4??

Tell you what, I am going to go out on Wed, and take pics of everything I can find. We can play ID that wheel. The prize is if you need it, I will pick it up and ship it to you. I will let you know what he wants for them if you are interested in anything that I find. I am going to look for 4 matching solid centers whatever style I can find that are 5 on 5.5

Better pick up an even dozen, because sometimes that how many you need to sort through to find a straight set of four.

Ignoring the KH wires, odd-ball 18" desert wheels and stuff, the hardest thing to find over here seems to be plain old 16" x 5" early solid steels to take '40-type hubcaps.

  10. Can you run a 7.50 tire on a 4" or 4 1/2"? I've heard some people say yes and other say no. Is it a safety thing or look??

I'm running 8.90x16 dirt trackers. With about 12000 miles I think it's safe. A lot of people run 7.50s on 16" steelies as well.

I've run a 7.50 on 4 1/2 wheels on several cars, works just fine!

don't think those are accessory '50/'51 wheels but stock '49s. They were 16".

I'd agree with the adjustable bent spoke Kelsey Hayes. My Pop had as set and got good money for back in the 70's. I've only seen them on rare occasion.

Went looking for specs last night in my Ford book stuff; so far I found only the 1940 intro high clearance wheel. It is shown as 18X3 5/8"...part number prefix is an unusual 01AS--this means: 01A=first intro 1940, p***enger car spec, and the S=special, meaning an over-the-counter part only, never put on at factory. I know I have specs on the wide 5 equivalent somewhere in the heap.
I've got to put together a total list of identifiable Ford wheels relevant to '28--48 rods; There are a surprising number of different wide 16's, and I know that there was actually a 13" (!!) with an "S" part number after the war...this took a huge donut tire meant apparently for desrt use! Probably some kind of WWII fallout there.

You don't need any specs on the wide 5 ones...if you see an 18" wide 5 with a rim narrower than your hand, you are there. Size is obvious if you look at the web between boltholes and rim, too. Allegedly easier to find than '40 type; 1937 was the (only) big sales year for 60's. There may have been some fat 18's for wide 5 3/4 ton trucks...don't remember, but will be on my chart if they exist!
60's got narrow rims EXCEPT I thinf station wagons, maybe commercials.

It's pretty hard to find the 16 x 5" Lincoln Wheels with the 5.5" Ford bolt pattern..........they may not be as rare as some others, but they are still a bit hard to find..........I run them on my rear with 7.50 x 16" tires.....a nice stance....

The wide 16's would be the desireable bits for early roadsters...the real tall ones were for lakesters, racing roadsters. You see them on street roadsters running at lakes or Bonneville in the early pics, but they had 16's for the street. Really specialized niche wheels...

Ford artillery style wheels with 16x4.5 with the 5.5 bolt pattern, not super rare, but look good and are a little different than the norm.

What do these wheels look like? Do they have small, squarish holes near the rim????
    Are they rare?
I looked at some narrow wheels on an old trailer, wide 5, 16", with caps, but the caps didn't say anything.....

The V8-60 wheels either solid or wide-5 look the same as there wider brothers.. They are just 3 1/2 inches wide.

They are hard to come up with, But not impossible.

I make it a point to pick up ANY Early ford wheels when available, I also grab Chevy's up to '56, Dodge~Plymouth up to '56, And any other 16" attractive looking wheel.

If they are available... Grab them !

If I may add to Bruce's post on the 18" x 3.62", "High Clearance", 5x5.5" wheels. Ford's 01AS-1015A is shown in the books to be K-H #23278. You might be more likely to find that stamped on the wheels than the Ford number. But, like has been said, an 18" rim will be easy to spot. Stu

  30. This what you're talkin' about?

Original Ford 15" with solid center.
