    Glenn,

Thanks for the pictures of "Hands" Keep the pictures coming. I appreciate your taking the time to post the photos

I grew up here in Texas. Have been to all the Louisiana tracks watching the Division four races in the 60's and 70's.

I have a 40 Willys coupe, small block chev,Hilborn fuel injected, four speed, Pontiac 5:38 rear. This is an all steel car that was raced at Whitehouse drag strip in Whitehouse, TX from 1963 till 1967. I have owned the car since 1970.

Again, thank for posting the photos!

Addendum to my post of our situation in 1965:

Jake Howard owner of Jake’s Speed Equipment in New Orleans, was my mentor for all my racing from 1957–’66. He took me under his wing and shared his vast racing experience and knowledge with me. It was Jake who convinced me in the late ‘50's, to make the automobile service business my life long career. He taught me that you should always do everything the best you can . . . and better than you did the last time!
Jake said that it was important to detail and present your race car like a show car. He pointed out that you can’t win all the races. What you take home from those races you lose, is pride in the fact that your car was known as one of the best looking race cars there! That is TRUE!
Late '80's photos of Jake attached. The 4 guys are l to r: Me, Jake Howard, Olaf Lee, Don Prieto. Olaf, Don & I went to school together in Nawlins. Olaf & Don have lived in Los angeles for 40 + years. Don has his 1965 AA/FD, "Hustler VI" as a cackle car. Here is a video of me starting it last October at Bakersfield. there were 70 cars fired up on nitro at the same time!

    Flashback . . 51 years ago! . . . .
Trophy photos are of my first 2 drag trophies. Won at opening day, 2 day meet, Labor Day, 1957. I had a '57 210 Del-Rey Fuel Injection car I special ordered for drag racin' and pussy (wishful thinkin'. The drag racin' was much more a success than the latter. <GRIN>) I never got beat in S/S, '57-'59.

  5. From what I remember, Schubert's car was a completely different approach. It was reported to weigh just 995 pounds ready to run. I heard Zane ran it mostly on straight alky. When I saw it run at LIONS, and beat the Chryslers, it was all initial acceleration. He had 'em 2 or 3 cars off the line, and they couldn't quite catch him before the lights. That was the great thing about 60's drag racing. Many means to the same end. Corporate money has killed inovation.

"Hands" was a very nice person.Saw him more than once at "The Valley'',and yea he could carry slicks! I believe he had the same desease as "Andre the Giant",and he drove that 56 damn near in the back seat, and was always hard to get around in Street Elems.Yea he bent a few steering wheels, and I think a Hurst shifter or two(at least that was racers rumors).

    Dean,
Somehow, Shubert & Herbert also got the mph later! Shoobie's quickest times were in the 7.7 range in 1965. They were definitely the Chevy to beat! We checked their times in Drag News every week! We went 200 late in the season (November) at the NHRA track at Opelousas.

    Glenn,

Thanks for the photos of "Hands" Very cool indeed! Only guy I know who had a pony tail and nobody and I mean nobody said a word about it! HA! HA!

Back in Hands day there was not a better racer period.

The film footage that I have of him racing at the 59-60 Nationals in Detriot is priceless. Imagine a guy flat towing a car from Austin, TX to Detroit!

Do you know his brother Butch Lake who for many years ran a 55 Chev Panel Wagon. I talk to Butch alot and he is alive and well in Austin and is racing a Pro Mod car at present. He stilllllllllllllllll can cut a mean light and drive a car out the back door.

Keep the comments and pictures coming. Your time is appreciated and enjoyed by all!

Back to working on the Willys. Go the four speed out doing a rebuild.

That Nova nose looks like Dick Harrell's car, maybe Fritz Callier's ... any pictures of it or any other S/S-F/X cars?

Got this in an e-mail ad from my handicapped supplier. Obviously somebody there has a sense of humor. If I can get enough track bookings, I might consider building one of these. Although I think the wing needs to be higher, and some wheelie bars need to be added.
