134" wheelbase, was oil tanker truck (doors still have Humble Oil logos, plus civil defense ID). Registration card from 1945 says loaded weight was 15,955 lbs. Bought in '03, previous owner owned for 13 years, previous owner to him was ex-executive from Standard Oil (owner of Humble Oil)... for 13 years. Truck had early '60s NJ Municipal plates on it- 20 years as oil tanker, another 10-15 as town tanker truck ??? Wish I knew more. I need to get back wrenching on it... if only work would allow...

Well I guess it depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to haul truck sized loads the S-10 suspension is too small.

While the track width of an S-10 is a little narrow under an AD pickup the COE is a little wider yet. My bet is the spacer's used when this suspension goes under a pickup would leave the wheels too deep under the fenders for most trucks.

If I remember correctly the truck I saw was yellow. While I was surprised to find it was S-10 underneath, I don't think I took pictures or retained any other details.

I saw one on a Astro Van frame. The steering lined up OK. I think a much better choice is the 87 Dodge Dakota Frame. It has big brakes, perfect track width, and best of all, the rack lines up perfectly, just needs to be twisted upwards.

 Hey, how do I get bigger pictures to post?

Metaltwister- me likey! Any closer pics of the bed and the... tailgate... open? Is it a lift-off or is it hinged?
I was contemplating shortening my '40's chassis and building a 'teardrop trunk'... maybe around 1.5' shorter than yours looks to be.

Astro van was my next shoice. I would want something for daily use with a basic SBC. Something for running to the hardware store or picking up motors and***** like that. My diesel daily is a flatbed and is not exactly the most conveniant.

I thought the Astro was on a full frame based on the full size trucks. I even had one for a while but never bothered to check.

My understanding is the Astro van had a front suspension based on the full size pickup, but had only a front subframe and no full frame. FYI most the full size GM vans since the 70's do not have a frame either.

I used a trans am front clip, 400ci / 350auto. I built the frame and used the trans am drive shaft and 12 bolt rear end. Its a work in progress and has been on the back burner for a while now. I really like the tow truck look with the rounded bed so i kinda dupliated it. The tail gate is hinged and locks with some olde chevy luv truck latches. the bed is a steel floor out of an 80 chevy truck. I will get some closer pics this weekend. Even though its just roughed in, its starting to take shape. The gate was to double as a bike ramp and it does ok.

Im building it to pull this trailer.

Certainly the frame is not made of stainless.... What gives it this look? Some sort of plating or powder coat?

Hate to say it but your wrong. The frame was stainless! The guy who owned it was a Canadian that builds custom industrial stainless equipment.

Correct. Astros have subframes, no full frame.

Although I'm sure it could be used to 'front clip' another vehicle.

Correct about the Astro vans. The full size vans were also unibody until 1996 when they got a regular pickup style frame.

  19. Sorry guys, but it's taken me a while to find, scan, and post these COE photos.
The'41 Chevy was built by Tommy Jones in Madison, WI. He cut the windshield in the center of the post, and across the floor at the bottom corner of the door. The same cuts were made on the long wheelbase panel body. Toss the back of the truck cab and slide the panel body onto the frame. EVERYTHING lined up as if the factory was going to make these, but just never got around to it. Even some holes in the floor lined up with holes in the original frame! He installed a Dodge motor home front suspension and a 471 Caddy engine and 400 trans. I flew out and drive it back to Baltimore in March of 2000. Corky Coker saw it at Carlisle the following month and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Didn't even have a chance to change the lettering to Rod 'n Race Fiberglass.

The Ford ramp truck and the Twin Coach were photographed at the 2001 NSRA Nate East in York, PA.

I spotted the way cool REO Quad Cab at the first California Hot Rod Reunion in '92. If I could have afforded the transportation cost back to the east coast, I would have done the deal.

I have a '50 Chevy I am putting up for sale if anyone is interested.

  25. Found this White 3000, with a tiny sleeper, at a Pomona Swap Meet 20 years ago. Not a show piece, but a truck set up to be a working truck. As I remember it was for sale at less than 5K....my how times do change.
