Edelbrock Performer carbs. Any good?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Jul 29, 2008.

  1. I'm thinking of one for my 305(mild cam, LT1 manifolds). Any one running them. How do they compare to a Holley? I was planning on a 600 cfm. Thanks, Todd

I'm running two 600s on my nailhead. They're very similar to the old Carter AFB......I've had good luck with them on the street.

Mine works great. For the street they are good carbs in my opinion.

Just put a 500 cfm on my 289 Stude, works great. Don't have it dialed in yet but it was pretty darn close right out of the box. My kid had a 600 on a 460 Ford 4 X 4 and it was perfect. I've had good Holleys and bad Holleys, the good ones were great, the bads ones leaked and generally gave me fits, the two best ones were used ones I rebuilt, one of the worst was brand new out of the box. Too much plastic on the new ones for my liking..........

  9. I'm running one on my 327 with the Performer aluminum intake, "double hump" heads and a mild Comp cam. Great throttle response and decent gas mileage (if I keep my foot out of it). I would definitely make the same choice again!

  10. Edelbrock publishes a great owner's manual, that can be downloaded from the net. I rejetted the two 600cfms on my 409 last Saturday. I found that one was missing a spring on the needle. I sent them an email and they mailed two out n/c.

    Much goodwill on their part.

really good street carb. Seems to 'hold a tune' better than a Holley. I sell thousands a year and get a good response from my customers.

    Just a quick question.

What manifolds from the LT1 are you going to run?

    The heads?

I think going to a bigger combustion chamber on a 305 is a huge mistake.

You need a small chamber head on a 305, it japs the compression up, thats where the high out put 305's get their snap.

I know that compared to a 350 they are boat anchors, but the L69 for what it was was ok, even though the monte and camaro are total heavy weights.

Also the TPI 5.0's in the camaros were ok for what they were, especially the ones in the 91-92 models that they used in the highway patrol cars.

I know that the LT1 heads are aluminum well on the the Fbody and vette anyway, and iron on the caprice and roadmaster and what not.

This also requires a specific intake manifold for the vortec style heads.

Oh and to to answer your question a 600cfm edelbrock with electric choke would be boss.

They're tits right out of the box and need minimal time to dial them in. Most of the time, just bolt it on and go.

For a take it out of the box and bolt it on, you can't get any better. I've had mine on my 390 cadillac for almost 4 years now and have had zero problems. easily tunable and you can get rebuild kits and tuning parts at Pep Boys and the like usually.

  14. Use a 500 cfm-- A SBC @ WOT only requires 485 cfm.
    Ya can't tune out cfm.
Biggest mistake most make is runnin a 600 on a 350, then thay try to lean it down.
Lean or rich it's still 600 cfm
    Good luck

    305 and 500cfm is a good street combo :)

Also is it still true that the electric choke carb is jetted for economy and the manual choke is jetted for performance???

I'm running two of the 500's on a 406 sbc. I've never had a problem with them. I would recommend checking and re-setting the float height (if needed) before you run it. Mine must have gotten bounced around a lot in shipping.

I have a 600cfm on my 350HP 327 in my 56 Chevy, was a little on rich side first but the calibration kits do a great job helping you to get the mixture right. It ran fine out of the box but I like to fine tune things. It´s got a good throttle response and revs up to 6500+ easily.
I also have a 750 on a 350, leaned it out slightly in the part throttle . No bogs, just runs nice and is good on gas too. Also revs up nicely to 6500 rpm and feels like it could do more... I just don´t dare, hahahaha

  21. Chris,

The type I'm talking about were made from 94-96. They were used on other motors besides LT1. This is what they look like with there heat shields removed.

I've got news for ya, I have 2 of them on a 305 with tunnelram, Crane 274 and Super Comp headers. As long as you get the spring kit and change it alittle at a time right along with the timimg, you can lean it out enough so that it's not that rich. A little rich is better than too lean and I don't have problems with mine, hell I get 16 - 17 mpg at an easy 2500 rpm cruise feeding both carbs. The other thing that REALLY helped was adding the pertronix kit to the dizzy with the flamethrower coil. I just changed plugs with all that going on and they were burning damn near perfect.

Just bolted a 500 cfm on my 300 Buick - ran great right out of the box with NO adjustments. Much better response than the stock 2bbl. Several years back I put an Edelbrock (650 ??) on a 383 Chev in my Merc, and was never able to get rid of a hesitation right off of Idle - so was a little reluctant to try another one, but was very pleased this time !!

I have a 600 cfm on a 68 327. Bolt and GO! little, if any adjustments made. Don't care for shine or look out of the box. I had mine gone thru and looks a lil more like the ol Carters! I've had mine sine 2001.

Question: Those w/electric choke, where you running your wire to. I have it connected to the coil and it says not to. It's been like that since I ploped it on.
