    Hello everyone.

My wife and I picked up a 1951 chevy with some heavy metal work done already. Chopped 9" in the back and 5" in the front, shaved door handles, 51 Mercury grille, 59 Chrysler tail lights and 54 Mercury skirts. We plan on putting the 216 I-6 back in it and get it on the road before summer slips away. About how we landed the car. We had picked up a Golf cart in the begining of summer for nothing. We added some mods (that also cost us nothing) to it had fun and got bored. I put it on Craigslist looking to trade for a 50s or 60s car. A guy sent a message willing to trade the cart and $1500.00 cash. We had to do it and very happy we did. So this thread is the start of our build project. Enjoy and please comments and advise is welcome.

    Adam,

Great score on the '51. You HAVE to do something with the trunk - it needs to be pancaked so that it flows better with the roof line. You're also going to hear this a lot...it needs to be lower.

Have fun with it. These '49 to '54 Chevys are great cars.

    Thanks,

This whole rodding thing is new to us. Our big goal is to get it rolling soon and hit a show or two before the snow flies. Thanks for the compliment and I will looking into the "pancake-ing" and oh yeah, we will slam it. Just need to get the motor in to see where she sits and then adjust.

Those are 51 Mercury skirts. I can't believe someone would trade that car for a golf cart! You scored!!!! The grill doesn't work though. I would change it out for something that fits the opening better. DeSoto teeth maybe. Looks like a great start...

  8. Hey, I have one of those '59 Chrysler taillights in my junk if you need one. Nice lens, driver chrome, and it is a right side.

Car definately needs to sit low, up high makes the car look short and stubby - but it's a good score regardless.

I wouldnt lower it too much, the way it sits and especially that chop creates a feeling of how late 40s and early 50s customs actually were. id lower it maybe 2 inches at most.

You'll have more fun in the Kustom than the golf cart- I guarantee it.

    You got a good deal!

Good for you for keeping the 6. They are reliable and easy to hop up. Plenty of posts here and on Inliners.org on how to do that.

You should swing by Hot Rod Chassis & Cycle in Addison tonight (Thursday) to meet a bunch of HAMBers and other hot rodders.

sorry I meant 49-54s, look at the time, it was lunch time and I was super tired. I tried to type but my fingers didnt work like my brain or maybe the other way around.

I love it either way, I wish I could have found that since I check out the Craigslist sometimes. I know it wasnt listed but man u got one killer of a deal for that cart. He must have really NEEDED that cart.

    Thanks guys.

I just hit my first snag of the engine re-mount. Anybody in the Chicagoland area have a throttle linkage from the pedal to the carb for a 51 216-I6. looks like the guy lost it.

You certainly have the right car for this site. Look around, you'll love it.

I'll give you a ride on mower with a trailer for that... oh and a lawn rake...and one of those little things you pull weeds out with
