I've heard from numerous country people that a flock of chickens in the yard, most especially Guinea Hens, is absolute protection from snakes, and that a snake who encounters multiple chickens simply vanishes as he is pecked into molecules and swallowed. Unfortunately, most of us have zoning issues with this solution...
I'm not a snake expert but a huge wilderness fishing/hunting geek. One important thing you all have to realize is that Rattlesnakes don't always shake their rattler to warn possible predators. A month ago i went up to the local mountains to do some shooting at the range. On the way back to the car my wife & I were walking on this small dirt trail and when i looked behind me to see if my wife was ok i looked back at the trail in front of me and a 5 ft Western Rattlesnake was right in front of me. It immediately coiled up and raised its head in striking motion. It didn't shake its rattler once.
funny you mention chickens, cause since we DON'T have zoning issues, even though we live in town (our little neighborhood is considered the county) we can keep livestock..... wife not too crazy abut thickens though, but i'm still working on it, we have enough space....
Throw a bunch of ortho foggers in the garage before you do anything, if it doesnt kill them it will definately make them get out of there and once there out then you can do whatever procedures to make sure they dont come back, black widows are one thing, but a baby rattlesnake in my garage? Thats when I'd feel that my garage was getting taken over, thats scary! Good luck!
I used Snake-Away from Lowe's, smells awful. Found two snake skins in my shed and that was good enough for me to take action. Haven't found the snakes yet and hopefully never will. I also heard using Lime and mothballs works just as well.
I just catch the rattlers and let them go miles away from me. Sometimes they get the shovel..If I am away from home and see a non-poisonous snake, I'll catch it if i can and let it go at my house. Haven't seen any mice for years since I started bringing them home. The "good snakes" can hang out in the garage anytime.
I guess we shouldn't have any problems with snakes in the yard, since we got 7 barn cats with 8 kittens outside. And I am told that the farm down the road has about 25 cats, all which are hungry. We also have a couple of inside cats, but they get fed regularly. That was part of the deal. Told them I would feed them if they stayed the hell out of my garage. Silent Orchestra wrote: I like that pistol. Never seen one before. Going to have to go to my dealer and see they have 'em.
As an alternative, I have one of these... She singlehandedly took care of our Roof-Rat problem when we lived in Whitter... Her current interests are Lizards, Snakes, and amphibeons... She kills a couple snakes a week at our place...
Guineas are death on snakes-but they make a fence post look like Albert Einstien. You will loose them to everything that eats meat except snakes. They are great watch dogs too-nothing escapes their attention. We killed and skinned some rattlers several years ago in Abilene the first of November. Cool, but not cold. De-headed, gutted and skinned. Put them in the back of the pick-up (of course), and went in the house. When we came out to get them (they taste like......CHICKEN!!) they were all coiled, some were raised up like they had a head still. Their nervous systems don't know when to quit. So-don't get bit by a dead snake. I don't mind the snakes, but they always startle (scarce the crap out of) me.
come on down , the old farm house i bought has atleast 1 5'+ black snake in the attic....my step dad thinks he saw 2 , but not totally for sure... nothing like finding a 66" skin while doing some duct work.... i was told to use the rat glue traps and a couple boxes of moth balls.... brandon
We live on 5 acres. I've cleared mine off of brush and debris, and now have to mow grass and weeds twice a year or so. I used to have rattlers until I got it all cleared off. As we got rid of the packrats (by clearing), we noticed less snakes. We would get little "ground squirrels" though, that like to burrow in. I've got some "seed" they love to eat and it kills them instantly. I got lax about them, and had two rattlers this month, the first in probably 5 years. I got out the seed, walked the property, and sprinkled seed at every little burrow on a Saturday. Sunday, I walked the property with a bucket and a shovel, a collected 15 of them. I threw them in the wash at the back of the property and watched the vultures circle in. Some of the critters died in their holes........the coyotes dug them out and ate them. I checked out the property last weekend, and there are no new holes, and no new snakes. As far as the rattlers go, that's why I have a shot gun. The first one had just bit a small bunny, and was behind the hottub on the patio. That's not a good place to shoot them! I had to prod him out with a long piece of pipe, till he got in the yard. One shot, and he was the headless rattler. More vulture food. I don't need them biting my dog, she's been bit by a brown recluse......but that's a whole nuther story.
Snakes are good in the garage, rats ate the wiring out of my boat, I wish they were in my garage . If you get bit by one you probably have bad karma anyway...
two guys are hiking in the desert,,one of them gets bit in the dick by a rattlesnake,, his buddy leaves him there and runs into town to see what he needs to do to save his buddy,,,,the doctor says he needs to cut an "X" where the bite is, and suck the poison out,,,,,,,,,he goes back out to the desert to his buddy, who is very nervous and frantic by this time......and asks,,"well, did you find out what to do:?....his buddy says "doctor says you're gonna die"....
I walked up on 2 snakes in my garage a couple weeks back. They must have been breeding, they were all twisted up together, scared the crap out of me damn near stepped on them before I seen them. I ran to get the shovel, rake, chain saw, acid, any thing I could kill them suckers with. I dont care what kind they were. Dont know Dont care, just wanted them DEAD. Cut them in half and they were still trying to bite the shovel. My dad is 74 I dont think I have ever seen him laugh that hard. But I did kill them suckers, cut in half and then quarters. I HATE SNAKES.......
I found a small snake in my garage a couple of weeks ago, it appeared to be about 1' long and was probably non-poisoness. I scared the s--t out of me and I did not catch it. I am now VERY carefull getting down on the floor. Look before you crawl under your car.
Yeah well thats up there in the concrete jungle where you only have to worry about the two legged snakes. I have killed three snakes in the past two years two black snakes and a Jersey Timber rattler or pine rattler as people around here call them. Yes we have rattle snakes in Southern New Jersey, we also have puffer snakes. Get yourself a 357 Magnum with Snake shot it's a lot faster and easier not to mention safer then using the sharp end of a shovel like I did. The best thing was throwing the bastard out in the road while he was still moving and watching a Red tailed Hawk swoop down and pick him up in the blink of an eye. Like one of the other guys said watch out for the little one's they are meaner and more lethal it's natures way of protecting them. Also as said get rid of the dog food or put it in a sealed container. You can try those electronic pest control things they sell in the home centers I can't say they will work on the snakes themselves but they will keep the rodents away aka snake food. The only thing snakes are good for is making belts or boots
Here we are on page five, guess everyone is duct taping their jeans to their socks before sliding under the car in that dimly lit old garage.
I recommend a 12 gauge shot gun or a small handgun if you'd prefer... that's how we do it where i live... i think you can get repellents. keep your garage closed and get an outside cat cuz rattlers like mice and it hunts them. My guess is it was looking for a shady place cuz their cold blooded so it ended up iinyour garage. my friend gets them under his porch. at a foot long they have probably left their mom already and are living on their own.
Thats funny, it says its humane to snakes. I never heard anybody with that concern. Even God said to kill 'em...
Anivenine costs the world. A few bites and yor bill would buy a nice 32! Even the venom detection kits cost a SHIT load!! But with 9 of the worlds most deadly snakes I would be happy to fork out the $$ if bit. Australian snakes are the most agressive snakes on the planet, they will chase you untill they get you or you get well away. They also dont bite just once, they will strike a dozens of times in seconds, the only upside is if they are not too scared they may not envenomate.
If you have a Cabella's they have one that comes in a nice case with a pretty nice holster, only Cabella's sells them with the case and holster too...Oh and you can get different size barrels, and then there is stainless, brushed, or black...I would recomend the stainless or brushed...looks really sharp. Then get your self some triple ot buck shot...some slugs...and a bunch of .45 long colt and go to town....The grips on them feel amazing..they're ribbed rubber..conforms to your hand and fingers nicely...oh and there's the built in gun lock...every taurus gun has that...Just all around a really nice and super fun gun. Oh and the sites are really neat too.
What does your cat weigh? My male Turkish Angora is 25 lbs and yours looks bigger! At almost 30 he is ! Funny no one thought of getting a pet Mongoose! They used to give the "Snake" a hard time.
I'm also on 5 acres here near Tucson..lived on this property for 25 years. I aggree..clear the area of brush.. Rattlers do not like being in the open.. Under Mesquite trees...in brush..weeds...be careful.. I have been working on the car..look out garage door..Bobcat just sittin' an watching. We have Javelina..Deer..Coyote..even had a Mt Lion in the driveway. One night..coming up my drive..a huge Owl scared the hell out of me on my motorcycle..almost dumped it..looked like three foot wingspan. At least..They don't steal hot rods...
