I swiped this from the internet someplace so I can't give proper credit, but it's good info none the less. For reference a 302 is almost 21" tall and a 351W is almost 24" tall.
Don't forget that the intake tube from the turbo goes across the top of the V/cover to the upper intake manifold and adds at least 5-6" to the height...The V/cover in the pic is for a turbo, hence the dip in the middle...So total height comes out around 30-31"... Mine just clears the hood with the oilpan 6" off the ground Stan
Help.........anyone have a sidedraft intake and possable carb for a 2.3 pinto engine, single webber, Delorto, whatever. Or might be interested in down draft sertup. No 4 barrels setups...... but interested in 2x1's style. Not trying to be a picky prick.....just know what look I'm looking for . Thanks, D
Racer Walsh sells a dual weber side draft & a downdraft intake. They have some others too maybe something like you are looking for.
It looks like I'll be joining the 2.3 turbo brigade, if things work out. I've got a 2,200# 1960 Rambler American 2dr and have made a tentative deal for a turbo 2.3/AT setup from a T-Bird Turbo Coupe. Not going for brute power, just a car that runs good and isn't something you see every day.
the 2.3 in boats used the turbo head the APBA used them in their 2.5 class. In drag racing the pintos were use in the lower stock classes 2L would run in 14.00-13.90 range. A friends w/s pinto wagon ran 13.90 eight inch rear 4.88 gears 22" slicks 4 speed NHRA legal stock motor pulling the frt wheels off the line. When I set-up 350cfm holleys for 2.3l I block power valve and rejetted this was for the mini-stocks.
That's the plan, so far. It looks like I'm getting the whole car, minus sheetmetal and interior, so I'll have the whole wiring setup to use.
Update on my car, I am making the frame, which has turned into a real challenge. I have most of the body now. I ended up making the back half of the roadster pickup. The engine is sitting on the stand waiting its turn.
hek of a little motor. building bonneville car around one after running hd/indians mc for years. esslinger best bet. speedway also. they have kb pistons for 6 cyl chev rods, good combo. turbo rods good. lot of ministock run them 2.3. good luck. vaya con Dios
Im running a 2.3 liter in a VW Beetle based roadster pickup. Second motor Ive run. The first motor lost all compression from running zoomies. It fried the ring out of the back two cylinders. The '96 Ranger has a real nice tube header on it that will fit all "D" port and round port heads regardless of displacement. Try to avoid the 8 plug motors. They say you can just run them on 4 plugs but they don't run as well.
I went back and read some of the older threads here. I saw questions about what flywheel interchanges to what and what valve cover can I use? Check out the Ranger Station website. Theres a ton of info in there in a section for the 2.3. There even a picture guide to porting the heads and a what fits what guide.
The T-bird was delivered yesterday, so as soon as I get my bike painted, I'll start getting the engine and related stuff removed for transplant into the Rambler. This looks like it'll be fun!
i built a '82 mustang with a draw thru 2.3 turbo motor. ran 20 lbs of boost and a 75 shot of nitrous with 4 fogger nozzles. needles to say it ran real good. the car was set up with a c4 trans and 8.8 rear. we did alot of work to the motor/head ect. i do have a brand new aluminum canton 2.3 OIL PAN AND PICK UP that id sell cheap if anyone can use it. pm me . thanks john
Aside from the T5 trans, what other manual trans options are there for the 2.3? Lots of great info in this thread, thanks to all for posting.
Merkur and Scorpio had a T9 5 speed. You can buy adapter and flywheel to take any SBF trans http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-3-...rbo-Coupe_W0QQitemZ120347698451QQcmdZViewItem
Wow! i'm glad to see there are other options where power choice is concerned. I'll bet these little four banngers get good fuel economy as well? Something necessary in todays roller-coaster fuel market. I think I might have to score one of these little motors.
For more info on the 2.0/2.3/2.5 Ford s.o.h.c. banger look here! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=317117
Man you cats hooked me with this Thread. I have an 87 TurboCoupe in the drive, along with a T roadster body. This could be the start of another project that I don't know how I will ever finish.
guys thanks alot for all your posts, i love the 2.3 have three mustangs all 1989s all with 2.3efi have a chance to pick up a spare 91 block with DIS ignition would like to convert it to carb will the distributor pop in once i get that sensorplug out, I know i have to get rid of the 8 plug junk head and keep that cam though,, what ford distributor should i hunt down for the duraspark system,i would probably be using that gm4 pin module mounted on the inner fender to control the duraspark, was thinking about getting the carb adapter plate that bolts up to the efi intake from esslinger ,,,,,,thanks
No longer a doubter... here is an O/T pix and apology - I feel the need to apologize if any of my posts about initially wanting a small motor and getting good mpg with an I-4 seemed a little less than sincere after I opted for a super charged V-6 in my new rod project. Why? Well I've seen the light. On Friday night I threw a little coin in GM's direction and got a new Chevy HHR in SS trim with the 2.0L Ecotec I-4 turbocharged motor. The performance is just insane and besides that they stuffed it into very good handling car. The SS is light years better than the 2.2L HHR I traded in on it. I just can't imagine how fast a little roadster or truck with a turbo I-4 could be, weighing in at 1000-1500 lbs less than the HHR . Keep thinking fast and efficient you guys!!! Later, Gary
Thought you might want to see a pic of my 2.3 Pinto engine project. They are fun to mess around with and with the right set up, can be pretty spunky............ Dunk
My engine is at machine shop and I'd like to do frame front kickup and stretch today. How long is a Pinto engine from back face to furthest forward point (water pump pulley?)
I put the 2.3 turbo motor trans and 8.8 rear out of a 87 turbocoupe in a 1988 notchback mustang and it went 13.90s with 150,000 miles on the drivetrain,so those 2.3 turbo motors are real cool.
Thanks. I'll weld it up. I'm trying to avoid the usual problem of sedan pickups looking too long so did not want to leave too much.
I dont like the look of all those wires. I heard that the cam sensor that runs the additional 4 wires screws up. I dont know though I got one in my daily and it runs fine.
