New September issue of Good Guys Gazette features an amazing cover in satin black paper with a silky texture with a super glossy red 32 Ford "hot rod of the year" in 3D that pops right out at you! Never seen anything like it. I think that boy "KIRK!" might be onto something here. Wish I could post a photo of it...

abso;utely the best magazine cover I have ever seen. Just spectacular...

  9. Seems like in the last year I have actually begun to savor removing the wrapper from the "Gazette" each month to lay eyes on the cover, to appreciate the latest creation in the amazing graphic transformation the mag has undergone. This month's cover is absolutely stunning! Even the more mundane elements are given a fresh look. Kirk's eye for detail is beyond impressive (i.e. the spine photos from the last two years - what happened to them?) and it keeps you turning pages to find the next gem (like the shot of the HAMB Meet & Greet sticker in the Chicagoland Speedway coverage) he's provided, thanks, KIRK!

  10. Nice job, for sure. BUT, the captions are unreadable in the magazine. What is with the dark grey text on black background in about 3/4 of the caption boxes? They tell ya not to do that in first semester graphic design courses...

Chili...I think captions in different colors are called "artistic license"...and yes, the captions in the last issue are hard to read...but then again, if the Publisher gets lots of complaints via e-mail and letters, then you know the mag is getting read, including captions...and it prolly won't be done that way again...

That choice of lettering across the top with the red headline bar is the fucking Bees Knees.

And small text as such as the captions can be a pain in the ass to read epecially if they are not using 100% black and instead are using something like 75% Cyan, 68% Magenta, 67% Yellow 90% black. That will produce a better looking black but anything screened across the top will wash a bit unless it's bold.

Congrats Kirk and the rest of the Good-Guys crew it looks awesome. I need to subscribe to that this year.

WOW! Thanks guys, but of course there's a whole crew behind the Gazette. They're an amazing group.

Thanks goes to Kevin Reynolds, Solomon Lee, Larry Clay, Gaea McLaughlin, Brandon Flannery (Hemi) and Ryan Flowers, who rock the Casbah every month!

PS- Yes, we know that the Indy text is lame. It looked and read fine in proof, but looks like garbage in production. All the OLD guys have complained. :D You have to try new things. One "miss" out of lots of "hits" is fine by me.

PPS- I'm sure the Goodguys haters will still find something to complain about or how it's all a big conspiracy to suck you to the "dark side." We're constantly trying to give the customer what they want...MMWAAHAAHAA! You are falling right into our trap.

The non-varnish / varnish layout is cool... but here is tip for those going to press with a similar idea....

It very cool for a magazine cover, but I've found that it doesnt hold up in every day use. I did my Billetproof business cards like this a while back, flat black background with no varnish and the Billetproof logo in red with varnish on it. The non-varnished areas wear VERY easily. Just the having the biz cards in your pocket or in briefcase for a few hours will cause them to rub together and rub the ink off the non-varnished areas. The cards end up looking a little tatty. Now, this may be just the printer and the ink that they used in my case. But its sworn me off using this technique for anything that will see any sort of abuse.

    just a tip.

cool cover KIRK! cant wait to see mine *runs off to check the mailbox*

$30 for a year. That gets you 12 Gazettes, discounts on events (participant and spectator), membership card, decals, your name in the hat to win one of the giveaway cars...more. If you could take advantage of all of the discounts, it's worth like $300. Realistically you get a oversized 240 page full-color magazine each month, discounts to the shows near you (or that you drive to) and a chance to win a killer car.

This process is a little different. It's actually a complete pass of gloss clear and then spot matte varnish. I don't know how it would hold up rubbing together in your pocket, but it's really nice on a magazine cover.

They tell you lots of things in art school, that's why I have probably interviewed 150 art school graduates in the last 20 years, and hired only 2. Most are like mindless robots. They can't teach creativity and intelligence.

I'm always grateful I didn't take one of the scholarships I had at Otis Parsons and Art Center. I would never have had the opportunities I've had.

ahhhhh-haaaaa !!!! New technology. COOL. They didnt have the matte clear avail (at least at the printer I was using) when I did the biz cards.

That KIRK!, always on the cutting edge. :D

    Nice work, great looking magazine.

I with you 110% Kirk and I have had similar experiences in interviewing and in working with students preparing their portfolio before being unleashed unto the world. Pretty pictures (in a portfolio) do not a designer make...

Can't wait to see it. Hopefully it will arrive today. I've said it before, but the Gazette keeps getting better and better. Great job to Kirk and his team.

It's like the Non-Nutritive Cereal Varnish that Clark is working on in Christmas Vacation. I hope they don't try that Jelly Of The Month Club shit on you Kirk!
