Folks Of Interest Kudos to KIRK! coolest magazine cover in 3D

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by povertyflats, Aug 5, 2008.

  1. Thank You!!! I though it was just my old oil soaked eyes. I was straining last night to read some of the captions, and gave up. Cover is way cool, but the inside captions really missed the mark. It sucks seeing a nice car in the mag, and not being able to read the details.

Almost any printers should have the option of clear aqueous/varnish...from matte to gloss and anything between. It's just the same as a clear coat on a paint job and will help protect the ink from scratching, cracking, etc.

Just like a car, it also depends on the quality of the material it's being used on...different papers have different characteristics on the way they hold inks. Varnishes actually help stabilize the inks and accelerate dry times, so it's always a good idea for the printer and consumer to use if it's an option.

"And small text as such as the captions can be a pain in the ass to read epecially if they are not using 100% black and instead are using something like 75% Cyan, 68% Magenta, 67% Yellow 90% black. That will produce a better looking black but anything screened across the top will wash a bit unless it's bold."

I tend to use a mix of 40%C / 40%M / 50%Y / 100%K for my rich black builds...anything more becomes a waste since you cannot see the difference and the paper can get too wet amongst other issues. Using just 100% black can get spotty looking and tends to be more dark grey than black since it's almost never printed at 100% density. You need the other colors (CMY) to make it a nice rich black, but also need to over compensate in font size and clarity for a good read knowing that dot gain and paper shift will happen.

sorry for the long winded reply...I kinda geek out on that stuff.

I avoid tooting the Gazette's horn on here like the plague because of the crybabies, but since someone else brought it up...

Sorry, naysayers who claim brainwashing or $$$ loyalties, but I love doing the Gazette. If I wanted to make a lot of money again I'd go back to the garment industry. Be assured it's for the love.

Here are some of the covers from so far in 2008.

Never even knew they had a magazine, cause honestly, was never that interested in it since most of the cars at the Goodguys shows that I have been to a few years back had very few kinds of cars I like. But, hmm, maybe now it might be changing. Looks like a few good cover cars going back a few months. Maybe I'll hit up the next Pleasanton show and see if it has changed.

Best quality mag out there - meaning print layout, style, general overall appearance .... don't necessary like all the billet stuff but enough "proper" hot rods to keep me happy. They do have a broad market to keep happy, liked the NZ coverage a few copies ago - of course :D. Keep it up Kirk

Kirk! I'm glad that you do it strictly for the love- cuz if you didn't your covers and articles wouldn't be as cool as there are they would just show fat old men with their shirt open next to their 100k$ hot rod with their gold chain out- no offense to the old fat gold chainers!! Kirk! shows love to the upcomers and new design tastes!! best mag out right now that shows love to mid 60's kustoms and early model bare metal cars that are finished and not a fuckin rat rod! keep doin' what you do KIRK!!

    Two suggestions.
    1. fix the unreadable captions

    2. we need to have a foldout of the "Snugglers" in action

This issue RULES! The cover just pops out atcha! The HROTY is a cool ride, I dig the Nailhead.

My favorite picture was on page 83, #02. :D
I've been driving that old surviver to Indy GG since '02. Its nice to have a little attention for it (15 minutes of fame?). Usually there is a corner of my car in a picture of my buddies '49 (1 time) or '58 Chevy (2 times). Its like "always a bride's maid never a bride" kind of thing. I guess I will have go to BORDERS and get an extra copy.

    Great job on the issue!

The new one hasn't arrived yet, but I like the Gazette. It gets better all the time. Lots of color. Nice variety of cars and lots of them. The old issues go to my wife's 6th grade class. A new group of little heathens to spoil every year.

Table of contents...Atomic Punk...and again on page 19....and yet again on page 39

HAMB friendly (and often HAMBer owned...oh wait, I didn't think hardcore HAMBers went to GG??) coverage on nearly every page of coverage

Look at the hot rod of the year...I still cant believe something like that got the pick. Not complaining at all, but it just doesn't make sense with the natural order of things. Shouldn't Foose's latest be on the cover? Glad it's not!

Don't know what someone could complain about with Goodguys. Makes the NSRA look like the dinosaurs they are.

I don't know how they let you get away with posting all the event pictures you do here after every show. Although I guess you're the one that would tell someone not to do that huh? I'm waiting for you to post the story about when some guy who got "Fonzied" on the HAMB bitched you out at a show...or at least to see the Fonze in print...

SELLOUT! It's the perfect Hot Rod of the Year. He completed all the required driving, racing etc. We have plenty of Street Rod awards, that's a full-on hot rod. I think he and his wife are HAMBers.

Actually, I do have a funny story from Columbus...

I was walking through the Winners Circle on that Sunday shooting cars and a guy walks up to me.

    "Are you KIRK!?"

    "Yep."

He then introduces himself and says that he digs the Gazette and my posts on the HAMB. I say thanks. Then he wants to know if he can ask me something. He kind of hesitates and says...

"You're not gonna put a Fonzie by my car are you? My wife and I have been worried about that."

I laughed and said, "No, your car is cool." It was.

Later I felt bad that he was worried about it. I got over it.

I also got recognized as a SNUGGLER in the airport on the way out there.

I'm waiting for Brandon to get through security and a chick walks up beside me...

    "Aren't you a SNUGGLER?"

    "Yes. Yes I am"

Turns out to be Jav's ex and HAMBer __________ (spacing on your name. Sorry!!!!), but it was damn funny.

Better way to do that is a double varnish. Use a flat coating with a high gloss spot uv. Get a sturdy flat surface and a sturdy high gloss surface. I haven't seen the mag but with their budget I'd be surprised if they didn't double varnish.

  21. Yeah it's a bitchin' cover and my wife proceeded to spill a glass of water on it before I even read the thing...right after I had commented to my buddy how I am kind of anal about keeping my magazines and books nice without dogeared pages, etc...

I agree with BobK. That is a really really cool cover.

  23. I used to get the Gazzette, but stopped cause of all the crap. The last one I got was a WHOLE different magazine, like a new crew took over! Not as much fluff. I'm so sick of seeing Hotrods and Musclecars with 20" billet wheels! I'm glad our hobby is steering toward painted, finished and chromed cars...Seems like more 60's style cars are being built, lots of chrome and wild paintjobs...

  26. The layout crew and proof readers fell asleep a little more than usual during this issue. Some of the captions are way off from the associated photos. Not to worry, though, it's not like anyone's able to read 'em. :p "Creativity" is cool, but worthless when the message can't be communicated effectively.

Hasn't SuperRod be doing covers with this printing technique for a while now?

Street Rod Builder has been doing a glossy flame overlay on their covers for the last few months. Not quite as nice as these.
