For the longest time the rumor was that someone was killed in the stands by clutch shrapnel. I think it was more rumor than fact, but hopefully Don Gillespie's documentary with set the story straight.

Nobody was killed in the Garlits accident. A woman was blinded at Lions when a Mopar S/S did a "neutral start" when the driver put the peddle to the floor while the car was in neutral and then hit the "D" button on the Torqueflight. The flywheel parts went into the crowd.
I've talked to Don and he's still on target for the release in October at the CHRR.
One more thing about the guy circled in the stands in that Garlits photo:
I've seen that photo before and the caption stated that the guy was just pointing himself out in the stands. Nothing more than that. Can't remember where I saw that, so its still anyones guess as to the facts.

Another shot I came across. Photgrapher is unknown. Can anyone determine what the circled part may be?

Looks like an arm of the clutch disc with a friction button on it.
    (Just guessing.)

OK, I found the video clip of the Garlits accident at LIONS and looked at it again. I haven't seen it for some time.
There's been some discussion here lately about if someone in the grandstands was killed or injured.
Although I know that nobody was killed, there is part of the home movie that shows a lot of activity in the grandstands on the "tower side" of the track after the dragster split into two pieces.
Just above the "L" in the LIONS sign (way to the right of the circled guy in this photo) are lots of people and some track officials rushing around someone or retrieving something. Something happened up there, but I don't know what. I hadn't noticed that when I had viewed it before.
The film clip will be included in the final part of the LIONS documentary due in October.

  23. OK, that thing just has nasty written all over it! I love the original Bantam radiator shell. I'd kill for those Pirellis on the front.

In his autobiography, "King of the Dragsters" Garlits talks about going to L.A. to give depositions in the case of a young man who was hit by shrapnel from the explosion. He wasn't killed, because Garlits said "he got a nice settlement". Don't know how bad he was hurt though.

Looks like McEwen next to Leong. This was the final of a 1970 AHRA Grand American race. Garlits was racing the Bob Creitz car from Tulsa. Not sure who was driving for Creitz, maybe Richard Tharp?

    WCD!

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Thanks for all that stunning info about John Mulligan. For some reason as a lad I thought Mulligan was cooler than the Snake and Mongoose and Garlits and Jungle Jim combined. It was like, wow, how can such a funny looking guy be doing something so friggin cool.

I just loving hearing Mulligan stories! He seems like he would have been just a plain blast!

    It was Tharp.

  30. Nawwwww, McEwen wouldn't be the only pussy in the picture holding his ears! Must be somebody else.
