T.C told me that the kid only lost his arm, "nothing else wrong with him exept him being a Californian" sorry guys thats what he said.....Kid also tried to get money from T.C. "cause he was the crew chief and it was his fault" T.C then says "How the hell do I have any money, I work for Garlits!!!) The run before the explosion Gar broke the rear end. They fixed it and I think they over looked a broken sprag....Remember they didnt change clutches every friggin round. Gar has his championship clutch "tool box" in the museum, an ol'pal plastic tackle box...I wish drag racing would go back to the simple times.

A similar thing happened down in Australia at Townsville from memory. A flywheel came apart and took off out of the side of the car and hit the fence sawing its way up and nearly cut a guy's right arm off. From what I can remember they saved his arm but he was a carpenter by trade and he couldn't work again so he got a big pay out.

  6. Hi,I am new to this forum, but all us car guys are sort of bonded by our love for these crazy Hot Rods, race cars and motorcycles, and everything automotive in general, I have been looking for any photo's of a 1940 willys gasser pick-up named Mighty-Mouse that was owned and driven in the 60's and 70's by the late Leroy Philson, the truck ran at various tracks in California but mostly at Fremont, the truck was an ugly green when it was first built but then was painted yellow, with a image of Mighty-Mouse on both doors,I have a grainy tape of the truck from the Jackson Bro's,Mr.Philson had moved back to Louisiana with his wife Bonnie, and I visited with him four about 4 hours 3 weeks before his death,I had bought a willys truck and had it shipped here in 1995,and was told that it may have been his truck, but never the less I now am restoreing it as close to the way it was in the 60's in his honor and memory,so please if you have any photo's of this truck in green or yellow, that I could use for research in building this truck, please pm me,post them of the forum,or e-mail them to me at: tufenuf4u07@aol.com and I thank you so much. Greg!!

    Greg,
I also met Leroy and Bonnie after they moved to Zachary, LA. I last saw them at the World of Wheels in New Orleans where their car was displayed shortly before his death. I liked Leroy.
I have no photos of his pickup.

Any shots of the rear of this car to see how they tied the two tone in?

The car is Holden FJ, an Aussie GM product, produced in 1953. This particular car was built and raced by Brian Keegan with great success, Brian is a mate of mine, now in his mid 70's, and has just finished an open wheeler with a blown SB Ford for power, guess you can't keep a good man down.:)
This FJ was powered by a triple Webber fed 6 cyl around 200 cid, and was I think ( and Bob will tell me if I'm wrong) the first Holden 6 into the 14's, 13's, and 12's, in around 69-72.
    Mazooma1, love the new avatar.
Dean, I think Burt's car was a Vauxhall Velox.

Well, I was half right. Foreign cars all look the same to me. :D

I am trying to figure out who the jr fueler belongs to. There were not a lot of full bodied rigs built for the class. The only one that comes to mind was Mike Quigley's Katch-Up. Same color, same basic body style

  23. I am not sure if this should be included because of the year of the car.... but..... this is my dads 66 Chevelle that he raced at Connecticut dragway when I was a little kid. That's me next to the car in one of the pics. I still remember my dad flat towing the car behind my moms station wagon..

They were some great times when you could race for fun and it didn't cost an arm and both legs.

sorry for the crappy pics, they are digital pictures of the original pics.

  24. Had the chance to meet George Fina at the local Route 56 Car Show. Neet cat and man did he have some cool ass stories to tell. He was the 1969 NHRA World Champion A/G Dragster-Competion Eliminator>>>>.

Like many of you this thread is a real trip down memory lane.
Brings a lot of tears to my eyes looking at many of the pictures, remembering friends long forgotten.

Took my "Island Dragway" windbreaker out of the closet ( won by wining stock eliminator ) took the cover off my Max Wedge Plymouth, bought some insanely expensive gas for it and drove to the nearest drag strip to watch. Haven't been to a strip in 25 years. Though the most of the cars are different the spirit is still alive.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane......................

It was the Kenz Muffler car out of Oxnard, Calif. Kent Fuller chassis, Wayne Ewing body, Tony Nancy interior. Noise by Kenz.
