Just a few pics of Pops new car, 63 Lark four door, 289 w/od, complete car, starts runs and drives but needs a little attention. Its a little rusty, mostly fenders and rockers. Doors are pretty solid. There is no wear on the seats, carpet, steering wheel, there are some stains and mouse nests but its all still in there! Note the odometer, 01749 miles,,,, yeah right!!?? I believe this to be the correct mileage on the car!!! The pedals show no signs of wear. The front tires appear to be the originals to the car, check out the tread! We get it on Monday, Hope,, Key word HOPE,,, to have it ready to go the drags!, Let the thrash begin!!
Brakes, shocks, tires, fix the clutch (pedal is froze), tune up, change oil, check lights and signals, clean fuel tank, check starter and alternator/regulator, wiring and then HIT THE ROAD!!!! (for now) Plans for later include a belt driven parts breaker, a/c and some body work and paint. Will be Dads new daily driver, and the first car my daughter will drive to school! Always wanted a Stude! Didn't matter what model, number of doors, or how ugly!
Another one saved! Welcome to the fold. If you aren't already a member join the Studebaker Drivers Club, defintely worth it. They are a great bunch and have been a huge help to me with tech assistance and finding parts.
Incredible, Jay! An amazing find, now that I can actually see the pics. Keep 'em comin' as the thrash progresses!!! Glad to see you guys made it home, headin' to Morris in a few.
ok i'll bite, whats a: first thought was a blower but that doesnt say daily driver or school car and i dont think ive seen one for a 289
http://i.pbase.com/u20/fangler/large/9133846.DCP_3142.jpg Studes were available with a paxton, factory installed, and yeah supercharger and still can be a daily!
That beautiful dash gives me heartache pangs for my long-lost '65 Daytona. I guess you already figured out that Studebakers came with tough V8s, cool dashboards, flat floors, 15" wheels and better brakes than 95 percent of the Big Three. Any signs that the rear might be a Twin Traction? That ought to make a large improvement in the quarter. Favor us with more pics when you get the chance!
Did that come from Pahrump, NV?? There was one nearly identical for sale there a couple of months back. dj
Kick ass ride, Homes! from the looks of the front tires that speedo might be right! Paxton, eh?! you've been around enough blowers to know the drill.......just lay in a good stock of parts! nice ride, Jay! it'll be something special when you're done, Bro!!!
i remember the paxton. the first thing that poped in to my head was a roots style set up that i havent seen
Nope,, it has been sitting at a local farmers place for over a year, he got it at auction somewhere, in fact he offered it to us when we bought our shoebox. Course it was a lot cheaper now than it was back then!
Well, Son, you let the cat outa the bag. The Stud is a Cruiser, no less, so a Cruiser it will be- with some teeth! Jay had the future mods laid out before I even told the guy I'd take it. I guess we should get it broke in before we get too crazy with it... Lkie Tinman said, tires, brakes, clutch, and fluids and she should be ready to run. I think that it might be best to keep it simple and lookin' like an old roller- a set of duals with some bark so you can hear the cackle crackle of the pipes bein' the only external clue that it's a sleeper, oh yeah!! It's a sweet machine!
Good news!! Got it back to shop, started inspecting things. Twin Trac!!! 3.20ish gear? Dana style rear. Got starter rebuilt and it runs! The glove box was worth the purchase price,, crazy thing!! Pulled front hubs/drums, everything looks new!!! Lugnuts sre still shiny! No ridge on the drums, no cracks on the hoses, full of fliud and no leaks at the wheel cylinders. Basically gonna repack bearings and put it back together. Battery box looks like it never had a battery in it. Light surface rust is all. Factory exhaust? I know the plugs and wires, cap, rotor and points are all original to the car. So now I can start the questions, the lifters are ticking,, how hard is it to adjust? And where do we get a kit for the carb? Any place better than the others?
Not sure about '63s but earlier Stude 289's had solid lifters............ Most FLAPS can get you a carb kit or one of the Stude Repop vendors. Yoiu are now an official "CASO"........... a "Cheap Ass Studebaker Owner" .
Got brakes all rebuilt, cleaned wheel cylinders and cleaned and repacked wheel bearings, shocks are off and the gas tank is at the cleaners. Pulled the carb for rebuild as it was leaking like crazy and ended up putting it back together with all the factory parts, and new gaskets. The pic is what I saw when I opened it up. Will have most of the parts tomorrow, and the tires and gas tank will be ready on Friday, got my fingers and toes crossed. We are still lookin good for a road trip to Joplin next weekend!
We broke it, no drags BUMMER, but we got all the parts on the way to fix it, motor mounts, water pump, and front seal kit. Also putting new valve seals in it, it smokes a bit when you nail it.
Started unbreaking it and got new valve seals installed and then pulled intake and valley pan to check cam, this is what I found!! Run the numbers on the heads,, 7570 head + .020 gasket = 10.25 to 1 compression!
