And that is why the HAMB Nationals are there every August.... :D
I think it's my favorite. Can't think of any in NC that would have the correct vibe for a HAMB event. Though a HAMB event at Maxton would be super cool.

I would like to nominate the Mid Michigan Motorplex at Stanton, MI. The track opened in 1955, before it was paved. Know this because I began announcing there, then. It's been open ever since. Though a modern facility it's in the middle of Michigan farm country and is accessible by a two-lane country road.

The track has previously held IHRA National events and several NHRA Regionals. Current schedule includes several of the marque-specific and specialty events.
Great place, run by good people.

  8. Great topic.......heres my honourable mention of some great tracks in the day.....at least 3 out of the 5 are still going today. They would be Grand Bend, Kohler (Cayuga), Mohawk, St. Thomas (Sparta) and Toronto. Here's a STP poster from 1965......enjoy.

    Richmond Dragway. 1/4 mile.
    Who run's 1/8 anyway?
    www.richmonddragway.com
It hasn't changed much over the years. It is about centered on the East Coast. Close the the intersection of I 95 and I 64.
If you want what "used to be" in California, you better move to Virginia.
The slingshot dragster logo they have had for years is super cool.

  11. Woodburn, Oregon. Between Portland and Salem. Easy access from I-5, great touring roads through rolling farmland. Panoramic views of the Cascade mountain range to the East, and the Coast Range to the West. Ed "The Ace" McCulloch was a regular there in the '60s, as was The Orange Crate. Just a few miles from the new home of the Spruce Goose and SR71 Blackbird.
And no sales tax in Oregon!

I ran the Winterport deal a couple of years ago and busted up a lot of stuff but was one of THE BEST times I have ever . It was like you showed up in 1960...
Oxford Dragway in Oxford Maine is going to do a few flag start events this
year.. Pretty nice track, set up etc.. Lots closer to Mass

  13. i like Island because its still 1965. BUT their tech is tough, tough. racer friendly? was told this weekend alot of regulars have left for e town and atco because of it. traction sucks and track personnel are slow. i have to go with Beaver Springs. Beaver Bob IS RACER FRIENDLY. check out the Jalopy Showdown 10/4/08. just check their website, its one of the best around.

My choice is Thompson or Dragway42 in Ohio. But I really would like to see more of what Linda Vaughn was doing to that popsicle a couple pages back! I'm just sayin/

The Southeast has a lot of strips. Granted, half of them are 1/8 mile but it provides a lot of opportunity to race. I live in Northern VA and there's something like 19 dragstrips within a 4 hour drive.

  19. West Coast no brainer is definitely Famoso - Come on, home of the Smokers Fuel & Gas Championships, the place oozes history. The March Meet!

If that can't be put together Fontucky has an old vibe to it once you get past the big oval. And the track is pretty good too!

Doubt Pomona could be had because of cost and too many restrictions as to how many events a year.

Famoso now - Raisin City and Fremont back in the day. Fuelers racing 4 wide at Raisin City, that was a spectacle. Fog coming in from the Bay during a race at Fremont was really eerie.

Wasn't there talk of reopening it in the late 90's? Too bad it fell through.

Both my first trip down a drag strip and my first hot (wink, wink) girl friend have the same warm place in my heart, even though I haven't seen either in 40 years.

  26. I know Im gonna take some heat for this,,as much as I like Island Dragstrip for a East Coast Race, and I said Island first,,,I might have to reconsider E-town again,,, booking might be tricky,,, but the +s are motels, hotels,, more food,, places to eat,,, in the area , camping on site,, NY Metro area,,, Long Island,,,,Philly area,,, After returning from the OLD Time Drags /Funny Car Reunion, and really looking around seems like it has a bit more to offer...
