I was checking out the Speedweek '08 photos on the SCTA-BNI website and stumbled upon a couple of pics of Ron "FlatFire" Main's rubber band powered streamliner in the Saturday (08/16/08) album:

    876 O-OS Twisted Ron Main.jpg
Entry #876 O/OS "Twisted" Ron Main

    2 sets of 25 48x3inch rubber bands.jpg
Powered by two set of twenty-five (48" x 3") rubber bands!!!

Ron will be busy running the Poteet / Main "Speed Demon" Blown Fuel F-motored Streamliner this week ... so inquiring minds want to know ... Is the #876 entry legit? ... is Main trying to establish a record in a new cl***? ... or is the #876 car just a novelty for a guy with way too much $$$? :D

Kennedy is out there with Poteet this week.

He says that the Ron Main rubber band car is supposed to run one mile at 30mph on those rubber bands. Says it has some sort of wench system to twist them up & then lets 'em go.

Weird way to achieve 30mph if you ask me.

I wonder how far you could shoot one of those rubber bands! I bet if you hit somebody with one it would leave a mark.

Cute grandson you have there. Glad to see he has a helmet on, you can't start teaching them young enough these days !

  10. Too much twist in too light a car can make a car hop and flop around.

How do those toy cars that you quickly push across the floor a few times, and then let go, work?

This makes me wonder about Franklin Ratciffs VW powered LSR "The Propster" ,claimed to out accelerate a modern day TF in a 1/4 mile and jump tall buildings in a single bound ! --- There was a bicycle record set some time back so rubber bands off the Sunday Funnies isn't to far out of the box.

With all the chains and other mechanisms, perhaps Mr. Main has a sort of perpetual motion thing in mind?

  20. It takes a twisted mind to come up with a design like that!

I bet they built it in a snap though.

    You are on to something!
Gives a new meaning to the term "tow vehicle".

Take it 3 miles out,(short course?),and hook it to its "anchor",and tow that ****er back to the starting line,oh,say, 3 1/2 miles back!

A new market for surgical tubing!

I seen this the other day and thought it was cool enough to call my dad(who is there ) and tell him to make sure and watch this thing if it ever runs. If he misses it I hope somone puts it on here how it does.

I saw that car there. What caught my eye was the extremely skinny tires it is running and than when I went over to take a look I saw all the rubber bands...WTF. I went back the next day to get some pictures of it and couldn't find it.

the "tow/slingshot" has been done......not real smart...as we even done it on a closed stretch of 4 lane. ****head neighbors living next to the hwy called the cops....hard to run when you got 2k lbs of dead weight attached to ya!

as for the rubberbands, great bit of novelty to tell your grandchildren. "now a long time ago, when we still had wheels on our automobiles, i set a world record by going 30 mph." ................"grandpa, what are wheels?" says the 12 year old.....
