got my copy of hot rod today, and man there are not alot in there for me. I got a letter the other day wanting me to renew it, get this it was $20.00 for 36 issues thats .55 cents an issues. and I threw it away.
Its funny that we will give 5.00 an issues for a 1956 issue but not .55 cents for a new one but hey thats just me. I don't see how a mag like hot rod can sell them that cheap
how do you guys feel about the new hot rod mag? just wondering now I like the new hotrod duluxe mag its out 6 times a year and I think they are $6.00 a copy I've bought every issue I guess a lot of folks with the muscle cars buy it

Check out your local public library. If you ask nicely around February they'll order a subscription for public consumption as their fiscal year starts July 1st.
    Ask me how I know.
You can even check the magazines out for a set-week term(whatever they allow) and then return it when you're done reading it.
    Happy motoring!

Hot rod magazine needs to change it's name to Mullet Machines magazine, I stopped subscribing to that magazine after the first 15 Camaros and that was after just the third issue.

Yeah, the Tommy Ivo piece in the last issue sucked. So did the funny car on fire on the cover.

Sheesh. 55 cents and you can't find anything worthwhile? Hot Rod covers a wide variety. It's not a niche mag like Deluxe.

  7. I renewed mine for 3 years via an eBay subscription...it was like $12 for 3 years, and I got a free hat too!

Its ok, and occasionally there's a good article, and its less than a cup of 7-11 coffee a month

  8. I don't get it - car guys that can't find 55 cents worth of stuff in HRM? Hell half the time the "Where it all began" page is worth at least a quarter and the same for the finish line picture. This month a pic of a line up of old Funny Cars (when they were new) and the article on Main & Poteet's Bonneville car alone are worth at least 80 cents. And there's always great tech advice. Oh yeah and a good 409 article this month too.
Yeah there's a lot of Camaro overload and those freakin subscription cards drive me crazy (one month I collected about 25 of them and sent them in with names like Dick Gozinya, they pay the postage) but I always find my money's worth.

I got 3 years for $18 by going on the internet and searching discount car mag. subscriptions. Not my favorite magazine, by far, but worth 50 cents per copy........

NO,I quit buying a few years ago when they started having a few Harley's.Then came 20" wheels on everything, plus everthing featured was high$$$$$. CarCraft was decent about four or five years ago, lots of low budget common sense stuff.I pretty much quit buying any mags when I got the net. I like tech articles, and who can beat the tech on the H.A.M.B.?

The biggest problem I have found with hot rod magazine is you can't use it to wipe your ass because the paper is to slick.

no sense in buying HOT ROD.. if there was anything important in it someone would post it here. I bought every issue from 1973 til 1993, then I stopped buying it. haven't bought one since.

I personally like HOT ROD. This issue was good because of the pump gas drags. 3 of my best friends built Lee Saunders' Viper. Went 7.99 on 93. In my opinion the most impressive "street" car ever built. Plus like mentioned before, anything to do with the salt is nice too.

It's been very good lately, last months Ivo article ruled. I received the new issue yesterday and I agree, it sucked. It's the first issue in a long time I've been disappointed with though, it's most definitely worth the subscription price.

I personally enjoy the magazine. The Ivo story was cool. Sometimes its hit or miss, but, I always enjoy reading about something in it. This month was the engine comparison in the 69 chevelle. I think its a great magazine actually, but I also enjoy muscle cars and corvettes. I'd love to see a feature on some old drag boats in the magazine too like years past as I am also into that.....55 cents is nothing....just drive to Boston via the Mass Pike and you will realize that when you hit 128.

  16. Hot Rod magazine has progressively gotten worse for the last twenty years...give it a year or so longer and the print will be so small you'll need a microscope to read it.
Haven't bought one in those past twenty years either!!

  17. Magazines don't make profits from the cover price. its all in the Ads they sell. More circulation, more demand for adz.

  18. I dont buy any of the mags anymore.I have looked at them when wating for my wife to get done shopping. Mostly advertising or tech articles that tell how to bolt on 25 horsepower with the new advertisers product. The internet and HAMB is enough for me. OldWolf

  19. So maybe you find three issues a year you want to buy and spend $15 on the newsstand. Or you can subscribe for $12 a year. And give away the others to someone's kid, sell them for a buck at the swap meet, line a bird cage, whatever. Build a paper-mache rat-rod out of them, even.

IMO if you're a true gearhead and don't appreciate the cars in HRM it's because of a chip on your shoulder, not cause of the mag. One of my buddies hates it because his chip is money, and he could never afford a feature car, thus feels poor and spews venom at the car owners. Another hates it because his chip is inability to operate a computer, and F.I tech articles make him feel dumb as an experienced mechanic.

That's the thing about generalist mags. There's gonna be things you don't like because of the diversity, but at 55 cents a copy, you don't need too many good pages to get your money's worth. Plus the photography has gotta be #2 or 3 in the car mag biz. Hell, at 55 cents it's worth reading just to stay current on lingo.

I used to get it. First car mag I ever subscribed to, way back in the dark days of rodding. It's just not my cup of tea any more.

  25. Anyone won can say "the Ivo article sucked", just doesn't get it. To have the guy that almost single handedly invented the touring pro concept tell the story in his own words is priceless. I have subscrubed to Hot Rod since 1959. I didn't renew for a couple of years in the 70's when it was nothing but Vans, but I came back when the subscription prices got so low. Yes, there are too many Camaros, just don't read those articles. For me, the "Where it all began" page is worth the 55 cents. How can anyone say they want to do it "old school" when they don't want to read about the guys that were in the "old school". If you don't appreciate the article on Pro Stock motors, then you ain't into motors. Hell no, I can't afford even one of their valve covers, but I found the fact that they are using a cam with 1" of lift flat amazing. One more thing, then I'm done. Anyone on the HAMB who can look at the picture of Connie standing over Scott as he was about to win his first championship, on page 19, see the grin of a proud father, and say "there's nothing in the latest issue for me", don't belong here. That pic is already taped on my tool box, and I'd have given a lot more that .55 for it!

Right on! I have found HR to be well worth the price. There is always at least one good article, usually more. Hell, I'll read any car magazine I can get my hands on-even (shudder) Motor Trend which I get from a buddy. You never can tell where you might learn something new, get better schooled on technology or just find an ad you haven't seen 100 times. Don't be a snob. I'd be okay if they dropped the Viagra ads, but that's who pays the bills, not 55 cents a copy.-BTW-have you noticed there is no "cents" key on a keyboard?

    (option 4, on a Mac anyway) ¢

    I got it today.

I fully agree with Rob's spiel about NASCAR needing to go back to racing production STOCK cars, or he agrees with me... I've been saying that ever since that cheater from Florida made that undersize car decades ago and forced them to "template" the cars.

I don't give a fuck about a crate motor shoot out. That belongs in Street Rodder...

The article and phantom art of the Main & Poteet Bonne car is cool.

Hot Rod was has always been about current performance and racing. If you're looking for it to only be about "Antique hotrod" racing, maybe, no, definitely, you opened the wrong pages.

Been to a drag strip lately?
    Mullets have never gone away!
Besides, I'd rather see not quite stylish but smarter than the average bear guys protecting their necks from skin cancer than looking like skin-head Neo-Nazi Hitler Youth wannabe's any day.

I only subscribe to HR and R&C, and buy TRJ at the store so I am assured of a pristine copy.

Wife subscribes to AutoWeek. They actually have a car that wasn't made in Germany on the cover this week... Guess someone screwed up...

I do too. The point is, if you're a gear head, you'll read anything about automobiles. Good point on HR's focus, too. It has always been about current peerformance vehicles and engines. If detroit was still making flatheads, HR would write about them. Theypicked up on the current resurgence of nostalgia floppers, and did a nice piece on them. Haven't seen anything on them in other car mags. Yes, I would have preferred something other than Randy Walls fire on the cover, but I bet it sells a lot of copies, which helps maintain the .55 issue cost.
