Talked with a guy today at the local Every Sunday Swap Meet and he mentioned making good money on old guitars, and that someone paid $300,000.00 for one at an auction somewere! Do we need to quit playing with cars and start chasing other items of value? What else is bringing stupid money out there?

I think if you look to cars for value and money making.....you probably need a hobby.....

My grandad was a Rickenbacker guitar salesman who had The Beatles sign his guitar after he met them at the Ed Sulivan Show when they played for the first time on it. That guitar paid for my grandmother's retirement, which was the only way it would have been paid for.

My grandad also used to hop trains and tie himself to the tops of boxcars to sleep while he traveled around the country for years. He would stop in a town and give music lessons for a while for money, then move on.

    CHECK IT OUT the article.

  7. Just watch Antiques Roadshow sometime- there is money to be found in just about ANY area of antiques. You just need to find the right audience with at least two serious bidders!

I'm in it as a hobby and use it as an escape from worrying about money (and all the other ******** life dumps on a person.) Couldn't care less what anybody else buys or sells something for.

Old toys. I have sold 12" GiJoes from the 60's, Hot Wheels Redlines, slot cars, trains, model kits, and other stuff and made thousands and thousands of dollars.

If I read that correctly, ONE guitar is worth about the same as TWO Pebble Beach Best of Show Winners? Very impressive, makes you wonder what else people walk by every day unknowing what the collector value is.

I'll agree, hobby and money shouldn't be used in the breath.

Thanks, That was what I was trying to find out with the original post, but I see it was taken the wrong way by most folks. Cars get a lot of exposure base on their size, smaller collectables go unnoticed by many.

I think some respondents to this post fail to see the point.. I think the goal of 37kid.. is to identify NON car things that he (and I, and anyone else) should be looking for.. IN order to make $$$ to spend on car parts..

that said, I traveled to a show with a friend recently that collects knives..

apparently certain knives are worth upwards of 1000.00

I have overlooked every knife at every swapmeet ever, because I never needed a knife..

from this time forward I will look at every one..

A guy I know owns a guitar restoration shop... You'll also find that some guitars are worth more in parts regardless of condition just like some cars are. Issue date and colors make a huge difference in price tag of the same model, NOS parts are just as hard to come by so often an excellent guitar will be torn down to up value on a lower number unit.

Fishing lures, old soap box racers, mini bikes, vintage go karts, cox gas planes/cars/boats, even BMX's from the 80's are picking up interest. Not $300,000 worth but if you know what you're looking at you can turn it for a profit.

I would say yeah if your into it for the money, move along down the line. There are those of us out here who love cars just because of what they are not what they are worth.

I couldnt agree more....I use my car addiction as pure escape, I dont worry about cash I put into it and dont expect a return...

that said I got into R/C helicopters 7 years ago and found there is good money in parts resale (IE they are worth more parted out than whole, just like many cars and guitars evidently)....I just bought out a hobby store to resell on E-gay...I hate E-gay, never buy a thing on it but sell boat loads of helicopter parts...the problem is, even after all the fees and **** i'm still makin a killing on it, hell it bought my new (in 2003) daily in cash, financed my way through my bachelors and masters degree, and is currently financing finishing my 49 chevy truck and starting build on my 47 Buick, bought 2 computers a couple house payments while finishing school, new washer and dryer....you get the idea.

That hobby aint a hobby any more...its WORK and I hate it as much as my day job...cause I feel like I gotta do it so I dont dip into the house funds...

I go through spurts on it...sometimes I'm real active doing it, other times I sit idle for a long time (up till I bought that hobby store out I hadnt sold any heli parts for over a year) Now I'm trying to get rid of all this **** so I can raise more cash to blow on my projects...its a wicked circle...but when one 1 inch by 1 inch part pulls a hundred bucks in....hard to turn down...multiply that by 80-100 and you get the idea...

The point is that he wants to hustle other stuff so he can afford the parts all the "me too" in it because its popular bankers have run the price up on. Why do think a guitar of any type would be worth so much money? Its because wealthy musicians and collectors have interest in them, and as the supply decreases and the demand remains the price goes up. Why is a 32 Ford or a Willy's coupe worth what it is? Let see, because if its your favorite car or not we all wouldn't mind having one and the guy with the deeper pocket usually wins so the next time one turns up the guy that missed out is paying out more not to miss out again... There is nothing wrong with knowing the general value of something, if nothing more you may be able to get something you'd rather have for it.

Its like this, you may not give two ****s for Civil War trinkets, or base ball cards but if you know what it is it could buy you another project instead of padding the next guys wallet. Say your daddy's Hemi Cuda convertible isn't cool now because its painted to your circle of friends, and you decide to sell it off, are you going to give it away for a couple grand? I think I'd sell it to the highest bidding Mopar twit and buy something else or for that matter a bigger garage and something else...

I collect alot of non-car stuff but not to sell for car parts. It is possible to maintain more than 1 hobby at a time.
    Vintage 50's & 60's baseball & football cards
    Vintage cameras
And alot of Oceanic Art. Right now- I'm into Papua New Guinea (PNG) masks- spears, etc. Some of this stuff can be quite valuable if it's vintage.
For me- it's the hunt. With tough times at some antique stores right now- it has become quite the buyer's market.
Last week- I bought a 100 year old 10 ft long whaler's har**** from a guy that was closing his space in a store. I've seen it there for years & he wanted some stupid money for it in better times. I told him I'd give him $100 for it & he took the deal.

The hot collectibles will always be the cl***ics-Beatles,Elvis, Honus Wagner baseball cards and that old painting in your grandma's hallway that's really a van Gogh with a signed copy of the Declaration of Independence stuck on the back.

Collectibles are what we had or wanted when we were kids and now have the money to buy. So your mom collected Depression Gl*** and Fiesta Ware. My kids collected Smurfs. So to make your killing, figure up what the kids of 45-50 years ago thought was cool and buy it up now to sell to them in 3-5 years when their kids are grown and out of the house and before they have to try to live on just their diminished IRA's and Social Security.

Finally! I knew someone would understand what I was getting at in the first place. Just thought it would be interesting to see what non automotive collectables were bring out there, nothing more.

Well, stay the hell away from mine, I admit, I do fondle them sometimes, but that's just sick.
