Event Coverage HAMB Drags 2008 - Flathead Roadster Road Trip

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Reggie, Aug 24, 2008.

  1. Hey Flathead lovers, I think I represented ya this past weekend. I drove 1200 brutal round trip miles (Austin, Tx to Joplin, Mo) in my roadster and the ole flatty never missed a beat. In fact, I think it gained a bit a respect from my SBC and Hemi riding mates. The ole flathead powered my roadster in near 100 degree heat, a traffic jam in Dallas, an Oklahoma down pour, and day long cruising at speeds well over 80mph. In fact, there were a few sustained jaunts of 90mph. T5 trannies rule!

  2. Heading into Dallas....the clouds aren't looking too good. And wouldn't you know it a cement truck had to roll over causing our lanes to jam with rubber neckers. Engine temp never got over 195 degrees.

I told you at the parking lot and I will tell you again, I would KILL to have your ride. Way to cool! Keith (BinderRod)

  5. Lot's of Texans on the trail to Joplin. It seems that we were riding with a different crew of folks at every stop. Ran into Joyce (Mrs. Blake) in her cool Model A pickup....she's a trooper. Blake, ya better watch out. She was buying guns at this pawn shop!

She was rolling with DW/LAW Racing and Mr.and Mrs. DammittDave.

  6. Passing up Buzzard and Lux Blue....aka CrushProof Racing. Buzzard had some outstanding runs!! That litlle coupe gets a little faster every year.

Glad to hear you and your posse made it home safe and sound Reggie. As always it was wonderful to see you and that AWESOME roadster. Did I ever mention to you that I LOVE riding topless??:D

  8. Parked the roadster in Joplin. Now we head to Springfield for the swap meet. Glad to be out of the roadster and riding gangsta style in ElJefe's '51 merc. Man, air springs sure ride better than buggy springs.

  9. Made it to the races....man, this was the best year yet! Great job Ryan and Marcie!

El Jefe went on a BBQ run and Norm kindly offered up his hood for the table.

Reggie good seeing and talking with ya again. You already know how I feel about that roadster, think I made that clear...:D

  11. In Dallas....we did our ritual again. Eating. This time at Campisi's, a great italian restuarant in Dallas thats been there for years. I guarantee ya lots of deals were made and orders (and I'm not talking orders for food) were given in this place back in the day. We're in the old parking garage ..... Krupanut, El Jefe, Mural, Von Franco, George and Norm. Missing is Danny Grahm (taking this picture) and his baby blue '41 Studebaker gasser and Eric Tallas....we left him in Joplin.....will somebody wake him up? :D

Thanks for the heads-up, Reggie! Good thing I had the house all clean and the laundry all done here at home before she got back!

Sounds like the new motor/trans in the little pickup did just fine for Joyce on the trip, but coming home tonight she broke a rear coilover in Denison. Long-story-short, the little pickup got trailered back to Austin while Buzzard's coupe got a parking lot gear change and then some freeway mileage on the new 9". They got back here, all safe-n-sound, a little after 1am Mon morning!

    Your roadster rules.

Those engines spanned the rockies and deserts in the 40's and 50's.
Really great to hear others are driving these engines all over creation.
But of course T-5's really make those speeds obtainable.
Thats really pushing it at those hot temps, I need to install one of those trannys in my pickup.

  23. I've heard horror storys all my life about flatheads not being able to be driven long hard miles,,,you disproved that theory,,,:)

I have been happy with the flatty in my mordoor and driven many miles and the addition of a 5-speed this winter will improve my driving pleasure.

BTW,,like everyone has already mentioned,,I want your roadster too!:D HRP
