Just starting a new traditional styled 33-34 project and kinda stuck for motor direction. Lets say you had the choice between 4 different motor tranny combinations. What would you choose. 1. 286CI Flathead with a 5 speed. 2. 346CI Cadillac Flathead with LaSalle side shift. 3. 51' 331 Cadillac with 4 speed Hydro. 4. 327 SBC with a Muncie 4 speed. 5. Other. I know quite a delima, to have to choose one of the above, but that is what is sitting in the garage. If you choose Other, lets hear what your suggestions would be.
I vote 286 flathead/5sp for the '33-'34. That leaves the other 3 up for grabs! I've got dibs on the 327/muncie!!!!!!!!!!!! For real, the Ford Flathead for the Model 40! (but I wouldn't turn down the 327!)
just to stir up trouble,i'd post build pictures with an E.F.INJECTED 6.0L LS2,with an 4L60E trans.then i would carve every bracket out of 10" square block of aluminum.then i would stand back and watch all of the drama unfold.after a few days i would post pictures of how it really looks, and tell everyone to get a life. but, that's just me. if you plan to drive the car alot go with the 327/4 speed. -danny
Not concerened with drivability. I currently drive my A flathead on 200-300 mile trips frequently and not concerened with it to much. Just looking for insight as to what motor/driveline people are associating a traditional based car. I have all the above listed in the garage and it is just a matter of putting one or the other in the car and driving it.
Other: 1. 341 DeSoto FireDome Hemi 2. 354 Chrysler FirePower Hemi 3. 5.7 L Mopar Hemi 2. 318/340/360 LA Mopar 3. 400 Mopar w/440 crank (451) You Asked! Look Ma, No Chevies!
I would go with the Flathead Caddie and LaSalle tranny, very cool looking and great conversation pieces with other traditional enthusiasts.... I don't have much on resources and bucks myself, so I am putting a 327 and Muncie from a '64 stingray in my A coupe. At least Napa is my friend on road trips...
there`s nothing in the world like a good running flathead merc motor but 5 speed`s ? why they make six speeds now ! I have a t56 in mine with a 3.80 gear for the race track and two overdrive gears to get me there and back 75 mph at 2,000 rpm getting 25 mpg it`s great
It all depends on what ERA of "traditional" you're trying to get to..... 30's-early 50's....go flatty. Caddy or Ford. Early 50's- mid 50's, anything but the 327... Early 60's and up, go overhead....
I voted for the 331 caddy too...but it really depends on what your plans are for the rest of the car. You don't want to end up with one of those "that's great but..." cars. Even the gauges can throw a car off for me. Everything's gotta be pre '55 if you're going with the caddy, otherwise if you go with the flathead, make it a post-war effort. The 327 has to be a mid-60's drag throwback.... you've got choices man!
Jim is THAT the cad you mentioned to me? Well, you did the flat head already and drove the hell out of it in the A........not saying the flattie wouldn't be cool, it would..but now you have the engine bay for the Cad right in front of you!
331 Cadi. Flat heads are very expensive and the cadi flaty good luck with that thing, sbc is my number 2 vote.
Nothing like twisting my arm there Tony. It is a strong possability right now. I am leaning toward either Caddy, or at least variations Caddy with LaSalle or 5 speed.
is Caddy + 5-speed a possibility? nobody sees the damn transmission underneath anyway. this lets yoi keep a banjo rear!
