Heres my Dad, in his police duds, taking delivery of a fleet of '57 Chevys for the Arcadia Police Department, 17 miles east of Los Angeles. The photo was taken at the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia.

"It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas."

  14. I know a guy here in kiwiville who purchased a Plymouth Fury from the late 70's which had been a cop car. It is plain grey color, but had all these dents along the roofline where people had been gently asked to spread 'em... :D:D
When we opened the trunk we found a magnetic flashing light, and a pair of brand new unused door decals saying " Sherriff's Dept, xxxxx County, Florida". Very cool. (the x's are because I forgot the name of the county)

Here a Poncho from the Arcadia Police Department...California

    Another 57 Chevy from Arcadia

    The Arcadia '59 Fords

    The '58 Fords

The Ford the department used for the radar unit. Before the transistorized radar equipment, they were all vacuum tubes, thus huge. The radar unit took up the entire rear area of the wagon.

Another shot of the '57 Chevys at the Santa Anita Race Track parking lot

And one more with the Harleys....note that the black and white one in the middle was for the large radar equipment.

Dad was an Arcadia policeman starting in 1947. We lived in town, so Dad brought a police car home every night. He backed it into the driveway, left the windows down and left the keys in the ignition. The shotgun was attached to the dash, but it had a lock on it.

Now here's a bunch of drag racers who got into some trouble...
When the 605 Freeway was being built, it "deadended" at Rivergrade Road and dumped the traffic onto surface streets in North El Monte.
But...the freeway north of there was almost complete and it was all nicely and newly paved...so....it became a nice, long, straight, wide-open "test track" for some of the drag race teams in the late hours. Big guns, too...gassers and an occasional dragster.
One of the policemen working the graveyard shift thought he'd put a stop to it and got into a "pursuit" with one of the racers...and flipped his beloved police car in the process :)
He's some of the drag guys looking over the rumpled squad car...I believe the guy on the left is even wearing a Schiefer Clutch t-shirt.
They all had some 'splaining" to do with the judge. :):)

I just checked with the original photo...and it IS a Schiefer Clutch T-shirt.:)

  21. Great pics. Having rode in the squad car on patrol and working the highways you can not imagine the rush when it's time to drop it in gear and stand on the throttle. You get it moving in the right direction and then reach to the toggle switches and hit the overheads the wig wags on the head lights and then depending on the situation the siren. I watch Cops on tv and get right on the edge of my recliner and yell at the officer to look out ! he's gonna run...Yeah, I still miss it. Barney Fife is my idol.....
