I'm looking for a rear end that is period correct for my 58 chevy truck.I would like a posi. What year can I look for.thanks
59 chevy 1/2 ton had an optional Dana 40 with posi. Don't get much more correct than that, eh? but a 55-57 chevy car rear with the perches welded on top and a posi chunk would be more hot rod oriented, and period correct, and easier to find...but probably even more expensive....and give you 5 lug bolt pattern, which you can match up front by installing 51-54 car front hubs/drums.
When I did my 55 Chevrolet Cameo pickup, years ago ... I used a 57 - 59 Ford car rear end. It is a 9 inch Ford so parts are easy to find and they have ratios from 2.50 to 4.57 from the factory. Aftermarket goes even to 6.50. I used one from a station wagon. It had the big axle bearings. This was in the 1970's ... so the rear ends were easier to find back then. Some folks say that the 57 - 59 Ford rears are impossible to find. Maybe so in their area but my favorite local junk yard still has 8 or 10
I put a 59 Pontiac in my 59 GMC. Had to narrow it with custom axel shafts though. Also adapted 57 Chevy brakes to it.
I don't know. I have one laying around here that I haven't used. The 3.92 ratio is a bit much and 44 gears won't fit it.
1965 T-bird (9 inch") is in the back of mine. 1/2" more narrow than stock, smooth back, and big drum brakes.
I've done three in '58 fleetsides All stock width '71 Camaro 10 bolt '87 or '88 S-10 10 Bolt Lincoln Versaisse (Sp?) 9"
