I think its pretty unique and would drive it in a second. As for anyone who gives you shit about being "unAmerican" for driving/owning it, needs to take a step back because Toyota is one of the largest employers in the United States keeping the American working man working and not sending his job to some Pakistanian like every other American corporation is doing.

I say get it and make it one hellacious gasser.

Yea, the deal fell through. I went there with money in hand and was told that they are now going to "auction" it. They had a couple of out-of-state inquiries about it and they did some internet research so they think it is very rare and will a bring a lot more money.

She said she would keep my number though.

Last time I drove by it was still setting there.

Tell people its a cut-down '54 Chev with a Stude Starlight grill. I bet you'll fool plenty of people. The moral, of course, is to not admit it's an import...:D

That is one cool gasser in my opinion.

I'd kill to start with an early, tip top shape Japanese pickup. THAT, would be FUN!
Those Crowns are very cool, you got my vote (probably enough to make you look elsewhere).

Gee......I'm into rock and roll and hot rods. I eat rice, not drive it. Go play on your own block. Ban him!

PS - Karma did you a flavor.......Glad Karma stepped in and stopped the deal. 63 tag on a 60? Thats got to tell you something. And a name that starts off with Toy. Does it come with a magnet?

I remember the article, but I thought it was on the cover of Hot Rod. Whichever mag it was, what cracked me up was the "letters to the editor" for the next six months BERATING the magazine for putting a Toyota on the cover.

Thinking back, I'll bet they lost a few hundred subscribers over that!

  13. Where do you draw the line? Yeah it's old, you could probably make it look alright, I guess. Do you think any self respecting hot rodder from the old days would be caught dead with some crapper like that in his driveway? Especially the ones that were WWII veterans, I'll bet they would love to have a nice little japanese pile of shit like that.

Oh come on guys, why not keep an open mind about this kind of thing? Just because its not american or english doesnt mean its a "piece of shit". I personally love seeing shit like Japanese cars recieving v8's and what not. You gotta admit that that car isnt bad looking, its one more car in the hotrod world thats going anti-hotrod.

  15. American or not, it's "stodgy" looking; not sleek at all. Uglier than the Ugly Truck.

alot of cars are ugly. I personally find Edsels and most Studebakers hideous, but i'd drive the shit out of one.

  17. Christ, I dig it. Who cares if it isn't 'Merican. What about that cool (now a) T-bucket running the 22r out there in Cali? It is as traditional as it comes, engine and all. I agree with trying to find the Toyota Hemi.

So, no black-balls from out this way. Kudos to thinking out side of the box.

There are so many foriegn cars that would be good hot rods or customs, the MG Magnette, Volvo PV544, and those bitchen Russian cars that look like Tri-fives, the GAZ and ZIL cars. So many cool ones out there.

    Good luck.

What ever happened with the Toyopet you were looking to buy from that lady in Michigan? I will be posting pictures of my 1958 Toyopet next week when I get back to the office or you can see the car on my web site at Frenchysrides.com at the bottom of the main page. I live in Tempe Az and I have taken my 1958 Toyopet at our local cruise night here in Scottsdale Az on Saturday night it sure draws a lot of attention. I also for fun start the engine with the hand crank.

    Take care

Sometimes I don't get this place...Because I'm a N00b I guess. But I've seen you guys flip the fuck out when someone post a Volkswagen that has been turned into a gasser with a V8 in it, but if someone post a 4 door stock Toyota it is okay..... I personally like it though.

    I agree with the N00b above ....

I read some of the posts here and Its a Bias-Fucking-Joke !!

All you guys that have some shit to talk about it being Japanese or Ugly or Whatever....

Go out on your Porch and give a Long look at whatever your Daily is .. I would suspect IT's Foriegn or Ugly ... OR BOTH !!

I think them Lil Jap cars from way back are pretty cool, I like the Early '60s Toyota pick ups that have the Cameo style bed.

And i'll say this Toyopet isnt 1/2 as Ugly as some of the Stretched out 'Ol Stool Rodz refugees beeing built be some of the 'TRADITIONAL' Rodders here on the HAMB.

  24. I've been here since 2001 and I feel the same way. I think some of us on here just have to be naysayers to keep everyone in check. :)

Those Toyopets are really cool. Personally, I'd change the drivetrain, maybe re-design the rear roofline a little...but I'd drive / own one in a heartbeat.

that car is as far from the slow and curious crowd as you can get. I keep telling people that the Japanese made some pretty cool old cars. new stuff is cloned crap, but the old stuff is cool.I like old hondas up until the mid eighties, then they lost it. My wifes 98 has no personality whatsoever. good daily driver and reliable but it's boring as hell.

i like it. build it. it's no more foreign than a Fiat Topolino and those are well accepted. it's not like your trying to pass off a 85 Corolla as some sort of "hot rod". i believe the majority of the people you will confront in real life while driving and enjoying the car will dig the hell out of it... and wonder what in the hell it is. should be a real attention getter... in a positive way. i'm certain you will use tasteful restraint in your "customizing".

i'm a fairly hard core "BUY AMERICAN" kind of guy but when it comes to old stuff i can't see how it is costing anyone here a job at this point.

I think this is my first negative post ever.....and I'm not against imports like Austins, Anglias etc......but this car to me is very unattractive.....shrunken 4 dr with body lines going in every direction, busy looking grill.....I don't see it as a custom, hot rod, or gasser.....it's just a geeky looking car....I just don't get the attraction.....

  28. I am I guess car crazy I appreciate all type of cars regardless everyone has their own taste. You can see from my website. I have another 1958 Toyopet in the back yard which will be converted in the next few years with a Lexus V8 engine with an automatic trans to be different.

    Thanks for your comments

that car would make a cool gasser. too bad you did not get it. would have been neat.

could have started an odd ball gasser club. I want to make a AMC Pacer into a gasser style car. or maybe a gremlin.

If you like it go for it!

What happend to the the idea to modify cars to stand out of the crowd
or to be different. Would owning a modified foreign car be too different?
