I know I'm only an FNG, but how about a thread with stock car photos from the beginning through, say, 1965 or so? NASCAR, USAC, IMCA, ASA, ARCA, etc. No jalopies or modifieds. Full-bodied stock cars. I'll kick it off with this one from the Dennis Unger collection - Fred Lorenzen taking the checkered flag from Johnny Shipman in the Yankee 300 USAC Stock Car road race at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
How about the start of that race...Parnelli Jones in a Bill Stroppe Mercury on the pole, with Lorenzen outside.
Nobody digs "Vintage Stock Cars" more than I do! But, I don't know if it's in keeping with what this board is all about. In fact I know it ain't. Maybe we can get away with '64 and earlier...Maybe '68? Joel
Hey, if it's historic, let's don't get too picky about it. That last one is obviously a 1960 Chevy. If you have something of real stock cars a little earlier, bring it on. Here's a NASCAR lineup from 1957. I have no idea where.
And here's one from Dayton Speedway in 1958. A Midwest Association for Race Cars (MARC) feature, before that organization became ARCA.
indybigjohn, it's obvious ya got quite a collection of great stuff. I'm very interested, bring it on. Joel
I just posted this one on the Linda Vaughn thread. It's Linda and Fred Lorenzen on the hood of his 1964 Ford after he won that race at IRP.
This is all back when a "stock car" was a stock car converted into a "race car". I remember them well for quite a few years in the pits at the old Saugus Raceway (Bonelli Stadium) north of town. This is also before power steering and all that creature comfort struck gold in circle track racing. Drivers back then were really "manly men" to run a 150 lap race in one of those cars!!
You guys have got some bitchin' stuff, too. I love those old local track cars... Here's Gary Bettenhausen before that road race at IRP.
Good ol' photos. That's the kind of stuff I want to see. Hey, that picture of Bobby Wawak reminds me... I was talking to Eli Gold and Barney Hall one night before a Busch race at IRP, and I asked if either one of them ever got their tongue all twisted up while calling a race. Barney said he couldn't remember doing it during a race, but there was one time in a qualifying session at Daytona when he said something like, "...and Bobby Wawak is out on the race twack."
just for you guys! a little family history for ya=P my grandpa on the right and heres another in the late 40s of my grandpa and his freind joe. and the shirt(that i guard with my life)
Great Start Big John. I have always liked this picture. I was in a museum somewhere and they had it blown up HUGE on a wall! It was great.. My favorite part is the dad running with his kid for a "Safe" spot. Makes the whole "Silence before the storm" felt even more. Great shot! J Shaw
Indybigjohn, That's a good story! Here's a few photos of the car on the day I lettered it. I took these with one of those Kodak 110 camera's. Joel
Let's hop in the way-back machine and head for 1973, Firestone donuts on Safety Racing wide fives. I can almost smell a clutch burning.
Thumbs up on this thread...wished i was around in those days, i did not get in to stock cars until late 70's. My fav's were Bonnett, Allison (Davey) and my all time was Dale... May all three of them RIP
