Logos and brand names: Am I the only one?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t64rd, Aug 29, 2008.

  1. Am I the only one who doesn't like a car mucked up with logos and brand names?

I'm talking brands cast, engraved or stamped into valve covers and intakes, modern Chevy bowties on everything from the valve stem caps to giant red bowtie stickers across the back glass, extra Ford logos (more than what the factory even put on them), etc.

A descrete older-style logo here and there is OK, and on a competition car, stickers are great, but shouldn't the overall design of a hot rod or custom be the emphasis?

Is anybody on the same page as me?

It depends. I don't like to much either but some parts/logos help communicate the essence of the car. Does that make sense?

But I'm like you, I agree. That is what I call American rice. It's the same things as a lot of the import guys(kids) do with the decals on their cars.

What the hell do I know, I am an artist and we are freaks.

Sadly, it's just a "sign" of the times. The brand name of things has become more important than the item itself. Not just car stuff either, I struggle every time I need to buy something as simple as a sweatshirt or pair of socks. Just try finding one without a logo on it! It's ot as easy as you think! Everything's a billboard these days... I also think it's funny that every other late model you see has a gigantic vinyl make/model sticker plastered across the rear window. I can clearly see that your truck is a Ford, buddy... from two miles away....

  8. Clean is good, much better than clutter and crap. Try and find a Honda Civic without stickers all over it and a 6 inch exhaust tip!

Now with this said, Some branding is cool, like the tastefully done Offenhauser logo on my intake and valve covers . . .

I think that's where we got the terms of shaving, nosing and decking. I have to admit, I left more on mine than I'd like. Many of the aftermarket parts came with Brand tags, and I haven't removed them.

    But you are absolutely right.

I feel the same way, the whole clay smith cams bird on the firewall is so overdone. If the car just has the feel it dont need stickers to distinguish itself

Like white letter tires, that's what came on my truck (05 Silverado) when I bought it, I waited two months to receive an advertising check from Goodyear and when I didn't, I blacked out the letters. I don't like white letter tires anyway and I'm not going to advertise for Goodyear.

I would totally agree, keep it clean and simple. Say no to the bolt on BS, with brand name logos and junk.

I've removed all the "Cadillac" emblems and logos from the outside of my '55 Coop DeVille, but I've added a couple of emblems back to the dash, so it can definitely be identified, by the unknowing and unhip crowd, as a Cadillac...

"Shaving" everything off does make it look smoother...but it all depends on what image you are trying to project...hot rod or kustom or classic..

  14. SHHHHHH! It matched the Calvin peeing on a Chevy logo that I put on the back window so well, I hadda do it.

  15. And on top of that we pay good money to buy T-Shirts that advertise Edelbrock, Holley, American Racing etc.

I have been like that well before I got into cars.
Never did I like advertising on T-shirts. I have worn a few..
When it comes to clothes.. popular name brand stuff is the fashion. That is more popular than the actual style of the clothing...
I hate looking like a walking billboard.
You see very few Ford logos on the older cars. I love it when someone stops and asks what kind of car that is.

For the most part, I hate the valve covers with the brand name cast into them. I hated M/Ts and much preferred the Cal Custom no names. But my old Weiand convertibles are an exception.:D

I hate the new Edelbrock neon carbs.:D

    Don't this look better???:D

The absolute worst for me is the Moroso VCs and air cleaners of the 70s-80s.

I'm pretty proud of my block letter Sharp heads....I'm such a hypocrite!!!:D

I can't get enough of those "Powered by Ford/Chevy/Honda" window stickers.

If you are on the HAMB you have an advantage/handicap that many "citizens" do not. You are a gearhead and can recognize one type/brand of vehicle from another. That said...it's awfully hard to mandate "good taste", that's why that ice cream joint has so many flavors...all's I'd need is chocolate...but that's just me...

Maybe it was their anti-sticker statement. My 'modern' ford is filled with acdelco branded items and I leave them on there as my anti-sticker statement: The name on the pieces don't mean crap. Always fun when somebody decides to go on a Ford is almighty or GM sucks rant and then looks closer and gets a funny look on their face. =-) I love my side terminal AC Delco battery in my ford. =-)

As for stickers in general, I hate them. I remove them whenever possible.

    Alex.

As with anything moderation is key. I don't mind a few tasteful things, but more is definitely not better.

I find it ironic that someone with a car club logo avatar is complaining about too many logos :)

Hope you're not dragging a plaque!

  25. On valve covers, heads or an intake is okay. Gaudy decals, no thanks.

  26. My HAMB profile is not a car...

...and I have my club plaque right below the neccessary evil of a FL license plate, and I have a HAMB plate on my firewall, it'll be covered by a hood. I am proud of my club, they have done much more for me than GM and Ford, that's why I choose to "advertise"

Thank you for all your concern over my hypocrisy.

  27. You're not the only one.

My whole take on it is if I'm going to advertise for you you should be paying me not vice versa.

But who am I to make that distinction.

  28. When I was picking up parts for the Fiat's motor, I specifically looked for no name valve covers BUT passed over several no name timing covers till I found a vintage 2-piece M:):)N piece. Sometimes you just have to have the correct stuff for it to be right.
No that's not the exhaust we'll be using, rather a vintage, pre-zoomie "weed burner" design.

I wish my valve covers said "ARDUN". But for the most part, I don't like some one wlse's name on my stuff.

I never got the stickers in the windows advertising that the car has NOS components or whatever the hell. Being as I can, and have, hotwired my car with a screwdriver (got grounded in H.S. and the keys to my car taken away, so I hotwired my (then my mother's) plymouth), it seems like a bad idea to broadcast what components I have under the hood. Fortunately, there isn't much demand for mopar flathead 6 stuff.
