Here's a '62 Merc that we've been working on for a few days now. Plans were to have a "fun" build, we took it from the field to all painted in 4 hours (2 guys working), then painted up the roof a little nicer. We've probably got about 40 hours in the whole car right now. A little more mechanical tuning up and we should be off to billetproof...

so whats the history on the lace and the crazy lines and overlays? was it just the way paint jobs were headed after the sixties? was it due to popular design and pop culture? and that fish scale style stuff too, crazy. were these guys just not wearing paint masks? haha , it all pretty cool , i'm just younger so iduno where it all came from

 

I think it mostly came from "one upmanship" each guy trying to out do the other. The same thing took place with customs of that era until good taste took a back seat to just being outrageous, much like the rat rod/rockabilly scene today. It's like anything else I guess, whoever does the most outrageous thing gets the most attention---for a little while.
I think the 60's had a lot to do with it too, everything was just a little crazy, and over the top back then.
Even though much of the paint of the era wasn't my "cup of tea", you have to admire the work and talent that went into many of them.
Fads come and go, and even come back again, but good taste and subtlety always remains in style.

Are you experienced? They say when one is on LSD there is a strange obsession with geometric patterns, one ends up studying them for hours.

Actually I believe it was a time when creativity ruled. To be critical of anyone's work was just not welcome or done. But you don't have to go back to the 70s to see that work, some of the designs I see today are awesome!

 

Speaking of fish scales...

Here's a job I did in '04. The bike belonged to an open water diver who loved the ocean, so I body worked the tank to look like something dropped into the top and made it ripple like water. A magazine photographer snapped the pictures using a white background and indirect lighting (which kills all the metalflake). !@#$%!!!

The bike's base color is faded from bottom to center (black to silver). The flames are silver 'flake with a pearl silver outline and 3 coats of candy Burple (blue/purple) over everything.

I called the bike "Deep Blue". He called it "Stolen" when a guy broke through the front door of a dealership and rode off with it. I think he was a Green Peace volunteer.

Thanks! Sometimes customers turn me loose...they have to live on Tums chased by Pepto Bizmol until I'm finished, but "god bless the brave" as my Grandma used to say!

My pops 63' panhead i painted for him , orange metalflake, pearl white flames with silver flake .Frame is all molded.HIs other bike is a 68' triumph bonneville painted candy red over silver flake.
