Neil Bonnett in a 1957 Chevrolet, I believe at Huntsville, Ala. This one and the Junior Johnson photo are from the Bobby Varnon collection...

Just a few pics of my old friend Jack Bowsher. We lost him in April '06. The hardest working man I've ever met. Almost 60 years of racing....

Thanks, Skrayp. Jack was also a good friend of mine when I was flagging for ARCA in the 60s and before ASA was formed. He was a very worthy champion. One of the things I remember most about him was that his cars were always immaculate, inside and out, when he came to the track. Back in those days that wasn't the norm. He was one of only a few drivers over my entire career who sought me out after a race to debrief (I guess that's the word) and ask why I did things a certain way. He said he knew then how to react on the track at the same time I was reacting. Very, very much ahead of his time. Thanks again.

Also, I loved the photo in the old hardtop that looks like it was taken on the beach at Daytona. And if I'm not mistaken, the one of the 68 or 69 Torino looks like it was taken at Dayton.

I mentioned that I had some photos from the Bobby Varnon collection. He put me on to them on another site. Here's one of Bobby his own self.

Gerald Dixon of Sellersburg, Ind., in a 55 Chevy at the Fairgrounds Motor Speedway. Gerald now runs a racing parts business in Sellersburg. His crew chief and partner on this car was Ray Callahan, at the time the fire chief in Sellersburg I believe, and later the proprietor of Bullitt Chassis.

Billy Clemons of New Albany, Ind. and his sharp AMC Javelin at the Fairgrounds. He first had a Hornet body on this thing, then the next year made it a Javelin. He asked what I thought of it, and I said, "Billy, you can call it a Hornet, a Javelin, whatever. It's still a Nash." It was a beautiful car, though, and it ran really well. I think Darrell Waltrip won a race at Salem with it.

Those photos from the California track were great. That's the way I remember weekly racing when I was growing up.

  21. I dig "Oddball" earlier Nascar's. Back when Racers built cars for whatever reasons other than factory support. Oh, and I like Pontiacs too!

How many Nascar Lemans did ya ever see?

Stokey Hamberg of Owensboro at Kentucky Motor Speedway (Whitesville). He brought this car to the first Bluegrass 300 at Louisville and won it after DW's 55 Ford fell out with mechanical problems.

Neat, Ramrodder. Where were they taken?

  25. John, I wish I could tell you. I have more I am uploading now from back in the day. Anyone?

That's it for now. I have a number of new ones for the vintage stock car thread.

  27. Stokey Hamberg! Wow, talk about a name out of the past. Thanks IndyBigJohn. Watched him many a Sunday afternoon at Kentucky Motor Speedway. Here's one of Darrell Waltrip at the old Ellis Speedway outside Owensboro. Got any more racers from the Owensboro area. Would love to see 'em.

Okay, Goober, here's the only other one I've uncovered so far. Remember P.B. Crowell, from Franklin, Tenn.? He had two of these Chevelles at Whitesville every week, 47 and 48. One night after DW trashed that 58 Ford he gave him a ride in the No. 48, and the rest is history...
