  2. I've got a 60 over Chevy 250 in my art deco roadster project:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=291413

60 over, aluminum flattop TRW pistons, head with boss removed and lump ports installed, big valves, ported, etc. Comp cams .0495 lift cam. Clifford aluminum intake with Edelbrock 400 CFM 4bbl, Clifford tube headers.

Got a T5 behind it. REALLY scoots and you just can't beat the sound of a split 6 exhaust.

IIRC, your '37 originally came with a 228 inline 6. Size was upped to 248 or 248.5 after the war.
Would be cool if you could find one of those to put in there.
I think Offy used to make multi-pot intakes for those engines.
My ol' man had a Motors Manual that should have your truck in it.
I can check, if you're interested.
Later (and probably easier to find) 6 was a 258. May be the same as the big AMC 6 (same displacement, anyway).
...of course, if you've already got the Chevy mill...

    ---------------------------------------------

    unsafe6 and bbdiamond,

LOVE those rods! Hopefully you're still drivin' them.

    ---------------------------------------------

    ImperialWheelingMachine,

.060 over?....in a 250?! I'd always heard the only Nova engines you could go .060 over in were 292 truck blocks. The rest were only good for .040 over.
    Interesting.

Cant remember if I posted in this thread before and too lazy to look but my 37 chevy p/u has a 57 235 and if I did post it was probably before I installed a T-5 to the 235 and the suspension and brakes upgrade. Jeff

I can't believe how hard of a time I'm having to find a plymouth flathead finned head. I"m starting to think I should have built a V8. The V8 stuff is everywhere.

  12. Actually, you can take them to .120 but it's not recommended for the street. .060 over is pretty common and no problems for a 250 or 292. Don't know about the other GM inlines.

I have a 1966 Chevy Van 230 straight 6, 3 on the tree. Still stock thinkin about replacing it with maybe a 290, built for some more power. doing a complet resto, just getting started though so a long way to go...

Welcome to the forum. ALWAYS room for more ladies.

One thing about the 292 is that it always was a gas hog.
I've never heard of one, whether car, truck or van, that averaged better than maybe 12 MPG (and at that milage, you might as well run a V8).
The 250 is just about as powerful and will net you a little better milage.
I know a stock 230 with manual tranny and some "talish" gears will net milage numbers in the mid-20's range, in a Camaro.
So figure, upper teens - to - lower 20's MPG range for your van (depending on gearing and tires).

    ...but here's something...

Starting in the '79 model year, the 250 and 292 were both offered with a 2-bbl. carb.
This is the "integral intake" cylinder head (meaning the intake manifold is cast as part of the head).
The 250 picked up some power because of this. Factory listing was 120 HP / 200 ft.lbs. (292 went up to 140 / 235).

Your 230 shares the same bore size as the 250 and the 292, so that 2-bbl. head will fit like its made for it.
Should still be able to find 'em in the junk yards. They were made for 8 model years ('79 to '84 for 250 and 'til '86 for the 292).
Add in a Marine cam (RH'd) and cherry bomb and your 230 should pick up around 35-40 HP.
Swap the ignition system over to HEI, too. Easier maintainence, better driveability and gas milage.
Should be worth a couple of more ponies as well.

If your 230 is still in good shape (or rebuildable, anyway), this might be a less expensive option.

Thanks soooo much for that info. the van sat for over 14 years in my grandfathers yard. i had a buddie of mine with a roll back bring it to my house. went to the parts store got oil and filter, plug wires, distributor, rotor, coil, pcv valve and got a hook up from a friend that works at interstate for a new battery. little bit of gas later and she fired right up. can't kill a six.... My grandfather said when he parked it that it needed a valve job, he was right about that, little bit of smoke., but other then that it runs great!!!!

Add me to the list! Ford 200 I-6. Dead stock. Easily gets 20+ MPG and they are a very durable motor...easy to work on too if it ever does need service. I strongly reccomend a six because the parts are plentiful for them plus they are usually far cheaper than V-8 stuff. The slender in-line design of these motors give them an old-timey look. Many youngsters think my 6 is much older/antique than it really is. I love 'em!:)

    Bill,

That's the grooviest little T-bucket you've got there!
It's one thing for 85 HP to pull around 3000-4000 lbs., but something totally different when it only has to pull 1000-1500 lbs.
    Much way coolness.
    ---------------------------------------------

    GoManGo,

    SWEET!
OMC always did use the prettiest shade of blue, didn't they?
I bet your '51's going to end up being very reet.
Would love to see a second posting when the project's done.
    ---------------------------------------------

    66ChevyGirl,

You definately said a mouthful when you mentioned that you can't kill a six.
Glad my suggestions were useful to you.
If possible, grab a "truck" exhaust manifold when you get that head. You'll know it because the outlet will measure 2.25" on the inside (car ex. was only 2").
According to the factory, that was worth 5HP, right there (and if the parts guy hands you a long one piece gasket for that exhaust manifold, it'll be the wrong one. That manifold takes 6 little oblong gaskets).

    Bill,

    That's a Chevy mill.
Check the similarity between it and the pics of GoManGo's 235 block.

I've got a '59 235 in my '51. Over the winter it's getting a dual offy with Rochester B's and a split exhaust (I'm a poor college student so I'm having to save my pennies to get the parts). I just put a 3.55 in my rear and I can do 95 with the stock intake and exhaust can't wait to see the performance changes when I switch to duals.
