Are some colors of paint more susceptible to fade than others? Ive always liked a nice gold paint, but most of the older gold paint jobs Ive seen don't hold up too well. Same with purple and some reds. Or is a long lasting paint job purely a product of a better quality paint and prep? And I suppose long term maintenance with the correct washing and waxing.
Hey, Yes, some colours do hold up better than others! Reds and yellows are ''chemical colours" their pigments are the product of various chemical bases, and not of organic origin. Your deeper based browns and blacks were/are derived from origanic elements, and are thus more " lightsafe" with less fading. Any colour that contains metalic (alum- inum flake) peral, mica or ground gl***, will suspend these in a clear base. The sunlight will travel through the clear, 'bounce off' the metalic, peral etc., travel down to the base colour, golds or browns etc., 'bounce off' the deep base colour, once again travel through the clear, the metalic, peral or mica on its' way out of the painted surface. All of this light traveling through the finish breaks down the clear and colour coats, which allows oxygen to attack them and thus decompose the paint. Lighter based colours such as whites, collosion beigh & pastel based colours reflect more of the light rays, unlike a deep based colour, and thus hold up better. Protecting paint from the sun, as much as possible, washing and wax- ing it as necessary, will add years to a paint job providing that it was a quality product to begin with, and the guy who sprayed it knew **** from shinola. Hey thanks for the info. Defiantly more happening in a paint job than meets the eye. Now I may have to rethink a gold metal flake paint job.
While what Pimpin said is dead on accurate, I wouldn't read as much into it. I wouldn't not pick a color because its not going to hold up quite as well as another. In the grand scheme of things, a black paint job may last 15 years while your gold flake job will go 10. However keep in mind that you will have to put up with your second favorite idea for 15 years. Use good quality products and especially a good quality high solids clear.
The new basecoat, clearcoat sysems are relatively bulletproof compared with the old enamels and especially, lacquers.
Using a good UV resistant clear will do wonders for the longevity of a paint job. There are "sunscreen" additives that can be used as well.
hok pagan gold candy doesnt fade as much as the other color candies, so it just depends on what system and what color.
The issue with fading of Metallic Gold paint jobs in the past boils down to one thing.......a lack of clearcoat protection. The metallic used for most gold colors is ground aluminum (as mentioned above) and without an inert layer of clear over it, is free to combine with the oxygen in the air, and basically "corrode". A modern basecoat/clearcot gold metallic color should last as well as any other basecoat color. Some of the clears on the market now could even outlast you & I.
