Regarding the '41 Willys winning C gas in 1962 -
Larry Teter was NHRA C Gas Champ in 1961 and 1962 with his '32 Vicky
Source: Gasser Madness "Al Tschida was C/Gas runner-up at the NATIONALS in Indianapolis in 1962 (Larry Teter won) and 1963 (Pork Zartman won) and finally won C/Gas in 1964."
    Setting the record straight.

  9. If ya want look for a thread call "Long lost Henry J". I
stumbled on it a couple weeks ago. A guy was looking
for a Henry J (this one was actually an Allstate) that
his dad and uncle sold before it was done. Turns out its
the same car my bosses used to race that is now owned
by George Streagle of Clay smith Cams. This guy found
the car he was looking for in about 4 posts/5hrs on the
Hamb. Cool! The blue car is George's original car and the other is the chop top car he bought from The Calvert Bros. (the guys I work with/for)

  10. I remember that thread and thought "how cool" it was that someone would turn up so quick with the history, and that it was still around..

In ontario we had several Henry J's running back in the 60's..mostly Olds's powered..
This wheelstanding pic I posted actually had a flathead in back in "the day"..Has a Mopar now..was built by the "kids" uncle who has it now.

A chicken in every pot Thanks Mark Skipper Moriarity for Mr. Broken Record.

The 2% wheelbase alteration limit in NHRA A/FX was hastily put in place after the NHRA tech. director "Farmer" Dismuke visited Detroit and saw the 1965 Mopar AWB cars under construction. The 64 A/FX cars had a total of 8 inches of wheel movement 3in front and 5 in back. The rules were no engine set back There was no mention of wheel base alteration in 64.

Thanks much for the info. So the nhra 2% limit in '65 allowed less movement than they were already running in '64. Somewhere on here there's a pic of Strickler's '64 going down track and it doesn't 'look like' 3" & 5" would be enough to cover the movement that one..

There was no rule other than the no engine set back rule in NHRA A/FX in 1964. which if there is no rule it must be legal. that is how they got by with the 3 and 5 inch movement in 64 and why they figured if a little is good then a lot will be better 10 and 15 inches for 1965 as there was still no mention in the rule book when Chrysler developed their plan for 65. It was only after NHRA realized what Chrysler was building that they added the 2% limit rule to the A/FX rules. here is the Ramchargers 64 A/FX with the 3 and 5 inch wheel movement [IMG]

I can't vouch for the authenticity of this story, but the man who told me (now passed away) swore by it. He said he was sent by NHRA to Detroit to verify how many Fairlane Thunderbolts were being built. He said he sat at the end of the final inspection line and checked the number plate on the firewall of each car that came off until they had enough to meet the rule, whatever it was. He said he was told years later that they built less than ten, and were running them around the building and switching plates before sending them back through.

I always read that those cars were shipped out as standard 289 fairlanes to DST and then converted at their facility. who knows for sure?

Now that we have been informed of the 2 percent rule (or lack thereof in 64), there should be no excuse for referring to the 64 cars as 2 percenters....Mr Guffey has spoken

Nice photo, Tom. I saw the car several times early in it's days when it was red. No doubt it was yellow, I just never saw it as such.
From the looks of the date on that photo, that film must have been in the camera for some time. Wasn't the car retired by then? I think Snake was running the Hawaiian at that time...

You may be right about that date, Doug. He was driving for Roland 5 months later at Indy. By the way, was that at Lions? I never lived in LA and was only at races there a couple of times, si I wasn't sure. It seems to me that was the only track where a spectator could be that close to the starting line.

Awesome photos...at that time dirt, rocks didn't stop bother them. So the guys that complain about Bakersfield pit area well take a look. Looks like too tall Pat Ganahl in the background with the Scheifer shirt.
