Here's a few of the "Oddballs of Nascar" to close out the weekend. I love these kind of racecars... Joel T-Bird Nascar '70 Buick Skylark of J.D. McDuffy Another McDuffy ride, '67 Skylark
Sorry about that, Gas Giant. Earl Balmer with the K&K Insurance Dodge in the first season (1966). He drove it before they settled on Bobby Isaac. This is the car he got on top of the first-turn guard rail at Darlington and very nearly got in the press box...
1979 in this one,I guess ya could tell I was a hot rod nut at hart, most all my racers had flames. Hialeah Speedway, now gone, one of many cars I build and drove for there, from mid 60's on.
By chance did that car have a H.C.Wilcock engine. Tell Marty Handshaw about this board.or thread I bet he has a good collection of photos. I rember him from the coupe days.
H.C.Wilcocks was the best shop in town for years and years, was hands down the greatist Ford flathead v8 guy ever as well, in Fla. So ya,you bet,he did nearly all my stuff before I had my own shop. I saw Marty [#327]a few years back, but not for some time now. I did ask Luo White[#312],about some pic's but he didn't keep much.,but here's one when I drove #312 for Luo a few years
And another one with Mark Martin when he was just a pup. I'm assuming he had a skirmish with one of the locals by the looks of the right side.
Speaking of Mark when he was "just a pup," how about this one. I think his first or second season in ASA.
Here's a few photo's of racecars at Chicagoland's famed "Raceway Park" in Blue Island, Il. My favorite era, the early 70's! The cars were just awesome and the drivers legendary. Stash Kullman and his "Stits" lettered Chevelle #4U Bruce O'Dell's #75 Nova Larry Middleton's #71 Nova My fav, Paul Bauer's #33 "gear driven cam" Chevelle. This car would come outta the 4th corner all wound up and it sounded like it had a blower! Those were real racecars... Joel
Man I really like that old roundy-round shit! Always seemed like "a guy" had a chance back then, cut up/weld up some stuff and see who comes out on top. A lot of variety and some "big ideas" some good, some no so much...but the there were no muffler rules either maybe that why WHAT... is my favorite word now...
Thanks indybigjohn and others for posting some great memories. What a great thread! By chance does anyone have any pictures they could post from the Tennessee-Carolina Speedway, Newport, Tn. from late 50's-early 60's or Beltsville, Speedway, Beltsville, Maryland, mid to late 60's? I would particularly love to see any photos of L.D. Ottinger (TN.) (2-time NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Champion) or Reds Kagle (MD.) multiple Late Model track champion and occasional NASCAR Grand National Series driver. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks, Don.
Wow!!! I never imagined we would get so much going. As for the question about Newport, I'll ask at Corbin this weekend if anybody knows of any old photos from there. We've got at least one vintage racer who should know of some. Got to get off here now and get stuff ready to go to Corbin. I'll check back Sunday sometime.
