so I bought this 50 Olds that was in Streetrodder 1/75 and was used in the movie Hotrod (ABC 1979). Well, that primer gray Willys just looked to cool to forget. Bought an all steel car from a fellow Hamber...rough, rolling, real steel. Bought a couple of hot sbc's from fellow Hambers...but it just didn't seem right to put anything but a big Hemi in the car. Finally bit hard and bought a bored/stroked 426, now 528. Built by Kilpatrick of Waukesha. Decided to fuel it with a pair of Quick Fuel E85 compatible 750's on a tunnel ram. Around these parts, E85 is cheap, 107 octane at $1.00 less than pump gas. This 12.5/1 elephant likes octane. Today, Jim Kilpatrick called and gave me the good news...the beast lives! I shall call it the Corn Fed Elephant. We estimate 750+HP. The chassis build will be the challenge. Should be fun to see that much power on a straight axle! Will keep you posted...and please wish us good fortune!
sorry folks, I have no pics tonight. the pics I have are on my computer at work. I will try my best to appease you at the earliest possible moment. No pics of the elephant, but you know what they look like. so bear with me, and, again, wish me good fortune...or criticize if you prefer.
At least put up some pics of the straight axle Olds...ya big freakin tease. Or should we just watch the movie?
Elephants are like****s. we know what they look like but we would like to see them all. Great looking Willys
will continue with the foreplay until the elephant is picked up at Kilpatricks. Boy, oh boy...you all want to get right to it. doesn't anybody like to pet?
Good thing we aren't dating cuz if you took this long to start foreplay I wouldn't be a happy girlfriend. Thanks for the photos. Looking forward to watching the progress on this project.
i started the foreplay when the post began yesterday. how many guys do you know that make foreplay last this long? thanks for looking and stay tuned.
Until I saw the pics, I was concerned about the use of my name for your car. But now I approve. Hope ya get it on the road and to BTTF's next year. I'd like to se it in person. Maybe the HAMB Drags too????
Building a chassis that will handle that much power is no big challenge, building a "traditional" chassis that will handle that much power or building a modern chassis that "looks" traditional could be quite the challenge. The biggest problems with the "in the air gassers" were the high center of gravity, the aerodynamics of a barn door and early tire technology. The people who drove the upper gas classes were usually equipped with huevos muey grande! Thanks for the pics, it looks like you are off to a great start. What are your plans, hot rod, street/strip or strip only? Personally I would shoot for an A/G car that could have held its own in the late 60s. but dont listen to me, there are way too many legal documents and medical professionals that say I am nuts.
definitely nose bleed gasser car. Likely not street legal...but if it has brake lights it is legal, right? we will build it safe first, nostalgic second and totally correct last. It will look the part when done. I'm not too worried about every single piece being period correct. For certain it will be a bit rough and, of course, primer gray. At least the doors will close without lifting on them...remember that scene? By the way, the Olds is NOT a straight axle car. Never has been.
Why not take some horsepower out of it and make it street legal. What a poor investment if you can't drive it, it has no history, and it really won't be useable as a good drag car. Have some fun with it without a trailer. By the way, there were three Willys used in the movie Hot Rod. Steve Castelli races one in Cal appropriately named Hot Rod Willys, Bill Mullins rebuilt one into race/street rod form (actually ran in the mid 8s) and the third one had the roof cut off for the inside the car film scenes. I'm not sure what happened to it after that.
Somtimes you can't get it up and you just have to make excuses or just mess around for awhile till you can. I mean the pics, you cant get the pics up somtimes.
