  1. This Hurricane Ike sounds like a bad one coming. Our prayers are with y'all! Hope you, your families, and other loved ones stay safe (hot rods, too). Take care and let us know how you're doing!

Left Houston about 9:30 last night and got to Dallas early this morning. Would have rather gone to San Antonio or Austin but couldnt find a room. Staying here until Sunday then heading back. Our zip code isnt in mandatory evacuation yet but we are living in the motor home right now while looking for a real house. I wasnt interested in riding this thing out in a "house" made of styrofoam and 1/8 inch plywood even it it wasnt a direct hit. Hopefully I'll have a motor home left when I get back. We evac'd from Gustav in the motor home and it cost more in diesel than the hotel room this time...but thats a different rant.

EDIT: Any thing going on in Dallas this weekend?

I rode out Hurricane Alicia 8 miles off Galveston bay in 1983, and let me tell 'ya, you made the right decision getting out!
These things are BAD, BAD, BAD!
I wish you the best for your family, possesions and property.

Fortunately, I had already made plans to leave town. Also in a non-evacuation zipcode, but going anyway for a massive pissup!

All I can do is laugh right now. We have a team of 6 in Houston for 2 months (during the season) on a project. Now we are working to get hotels for 2 in Austin, near my house and fly the others out to their own homes.
Work is boarding up a half million square feet of warehouse and sitting on the fence about opening for business tomorrow. The gas pumps are dry, unless you want premium. I think I remember why I don't live here, now.

Take care y'all! We'll be back next week. (always on the HAMB, though) :)

Living on the Gulf coast sucks sometimes! Fortunately, I live in North Louisiana so we don't get hammered as hard as the people down South. I believe Ike is going to be worse than Gustov was. At least you know a hurricane is coming..... Tornados are what scare the hell out of me. Good luck to everyone!

I have beer, chef boyardee, five cases of water, a shotgun with ammo, and a bar within swimming distance if I get lonely. Let's get it on.

I'm working on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico, latest warnings we've had for Ika make it passing west into Texas, just above the border, then circling back around and heading east again inland.

We've pulled all our trailing gear onboard and we're heading south at 14 knots. :D

I like to observe people and today I had a field day. I got to see 3 ladies fight over a shopping cart. I saw an accident at a gas station. I think one driver was nudging in front of another car until they hit.

I went to Kroger to get some food for my dog and the look in the eyes of the people in the store was crazy. REALLY crazy. Like a frenzy of some sort. I saw people with shopping carts full of microwave dinners. A lot of good that will be when the electricity goes out Saturday morning.

I almost want to go get my camera and film some of the frenzy. Then, there are the people who really don't need anything, but just like to go shopping when it's the worst time to do it. They are the same ones you see at 11:59PM Christmas Eve. This is their holiday. There are people driving around, just to be in the "experience". Kinda creepy.

At work, we decided to save our plastic Gatorade bottles after our experience with the frenzy during Rita 3 years ago. I filled some of them when I got home and have plenty of water. I'm smoking 2 fat ass briskets, so I'll have cooked meat for a couple days.

The lady across the street set her trash can out for pickup tomorrow and she is going to Dallas. I told her the trash guy wasn't coming and the wind might blow it away. Or worse, into my damn house! So, I reminded her that the winds were going to be about 85MPH. She thought about it and put a freakin' brick on top to hold the lid shut. I'll go out after she is gone and push it to a safe spot.

The real danger in a disaster are the people themselves. I'm not worried about the storm. I'm worried about the idiots trying to handle the storm.

Oh, this month is the 47 anniversary of hurricane Carla. One of the most destructive hurricanes in US history. It was a CAT 5. Ike may be a CAT4. Should be interesting.
