I was reading with great interest the thread on N.H.R.A Junior stock when i came across the picture of the Croc A Gator Studebaker,i used to own that car,i bought the car in Ft. Lauderdale in the 1970,s from Dempsey Hardy, the car was campaigned by Hardy,Weeks, and Densmore in N.H,R.A.V stock,it had a 232 cu. in.Studebaker V8 with a single 2bbl carb. ,3 speed trans. and 5.13 rear end gears in a modified rear, the car was a N.H.R.A. record holder,it had painted on both sides a double headed alligator/ crocodile,in the reptiles mouths were Oldsmobile rockets being crunched up,the Oldsmobiles were this cars main competition,i bought the car and a ton of race parts for $1200.00,i never raced the car and when i left Fla.i sold the car and all the parts. This car used to run mid 14 second E.T.s,not to bad for 232 inches and a single 2bbl carb.i was told that they used to check piston rings for friction in the bores with a fishing scale, ahh those were the days,i live in Fla.still love old cars ,always will.thanks,Gerry

The Sedan Delivery (Cherry Buster) was owned by Kutz and Calderhead. The first time I remember seeing the car it was painted a maroon/burgandy color with gold stripes, a very nice looking car. It was a very strong running Div. 1 car.

I stated in an earlier post that I owned the Tokyo Rose 56 delivery in the early 70's. When i got the car it was fully lettered as raced. It had Carmines body shop on the side panels, the cherry buster 57 delivery also says carmines on the quarter panel, and George Curetons pontiac says Carmines body shop on the rear quarter.must have been a popular shop for JR.stockers.:)

George had a '55 sedan when I first saw him race around 1965. The '56 sedan delivery was next and George won the 1967 World Finals in Tulsa with it. The Pontiac was next, but I don't think he had it long.

His next car was a '69 Nova purchased from Bobby Warren right after Bobby won the World Finals in Stock Eliminator in 1970. I think it was the same car that was later run in S/S.

George later drove the Soul Survivor SS/EA '69 Camaro that belonged to Sherwood Allen. I don't know when/if George stopped driving.

Here is a better photo of George's Nova and some of the other Jr. Stock regulars in the early 1970's.

TM, Thank you for the history lesson and the great photos, keep em coming. I believe George also ran a Super Stock 66 Chevy II, in the '80's? I'll try to find pictures.

I started going to Raceway Park i Englishtown, Nj in the mid-70's and I there was not much action from what I recall in the Stock classes. I used to run my '69 Mustang GT convertible with 351 windsor, 4bbl and 4 speed in H/Stock.........why did NHRA do away with these classes?

George also raced a1966 Chevy II that he bought from that great Carolina racer Garley Daniels. He removed the 4 speed and replaced it with a glide. He was runner up in Super Stock at the Bowling Green event, "Sportsnationals", in 1979 with the car.

    Somewhere I have a photo of Neja's '55 sedan that he ran in 1969 & 70.

Sad story about Tom. I think it was after the 1970 Summernationals that they were heading home and had a towing accident in Arizona. Tom was sleeping in the front of the camper insert in their pickup and was killed when the truck rolled. I don't remember if the car was salvaged or ever run again.

I had heard the stroy of Tom's accident. Sad. In regards to the 55, my understanding is that it is to be restored, just a matter of funds. It would be nice to see what you have TMcCrea.

[IMG]This car owned by Roger Gettleman {sp ?} used to race in the Miami Fl. area, which you can actually see the skyline of in the background. It was very fast in its days, the mid to late 60's. Ive read that the car or one like it has been restored to its present glory by his son or sons. I may be a little hazy on dates and names. As far as Duffy went, he made a little too much money, put it in the wrong places and got with the wrong people and ended up dead. A waste of a ton of talent. I was there and raced jr stock it was a ball unlike today

My first Jr Stocker was a P/S 59 like Boertmans 283/185 4 speed Biscayne, then an H/G 300 ford 6 powered 51 Anglia, then a 428 69 Mustang Cobrajet C/stocker, and last a 68 camaro Z/28 D/stocker that I bought for $500 with the engine in the trunk less intake & carb. When it got to whoever has the most money wins I quit. People took pride in building & racing their own car, now its 1 guy builds the car, another the motor, another the trans and fat pockets shows up to drive it and acts like he really did something. Something is seriously wrong with $10,000 283s, $5000 Jericos, a $3000 rear & axles, $4000 stock heads and on and on. A 428 that will run the big number is $30.000+. I read Classracer.com and go to the points meet 12 miles away once a year for a day, thats it for me. Ill buy a paper shredder if I ever get the urge again
