I know that the fairgrounds have come up multiple times in the past few years in meetings. I can't remember what the reasons for not moving are, but they must be pretty good because WestWorld costs a fortune to rent.

Maybe next year I think its a great idea. It is a few blocks from my house.

  3. TcMG, GreggAZ and Elpalcko all work at the biggest rod shops and all right in the area of the fair grounds that everyone here is talking about. Some of the other sites down town are where the phoenix suns play, where the diamond backs play and there is so many cool bars and local hang outs all over down town that there would be something for everyone that came to the show. DesertDroog, GreggAZ and myself all live downtown and would not trade it for any other place in the valley. Kirk if could just get you to come to Elp's open house and stay for awhile you could see first hand and maybe then be able to tell the power that be first hand info.

I live 4-5 minutes from the Stadium, the Car shows there ****! Went to the World of Fords show there was about 40 cars total, maybe 5 vendors total and $18 admission and $3.50 for a 20oz bottle of water.Another show they had I read several cars were asked to leave because of minor fluid drips.I would not waste my money there again ever.

Hot Rod Ron, Kirk's been to ElP's deal, I think he probably had a GREAT time, no?!

Re-read my initial posts, I brought up the fact that the bowl is FULL and that the fairgrounds is located in the HEART of the valley with pretty much ALL the best shops near by.

Fellas from outta town, take these guys up who live in the older part of town, we have some beautiful, historic sections of town. Like any BIG city, you take the good with the bad. I've got a lot on my plate at any given time to start a crusade for the SOUL of Phoenix, BUT a GREAT EVENT like this would not only serve the Good Guys organization, car devotees too, but also the city of Phoenix. As I said before, it not only would be a success, it would be an absolute BLOW OUT!!!

    Squeeg's Kustoms Mesa
    All Ways Hot Rods Phoenix
    Arizona Street Rods Phoenix
Hot Rods by Dean N. Phoenix
    Industrial Ch***is Phoenix
    Premier Autobody Phoenix
    Ronny Olmstead Phoenix
    Don Marks Phoenix

Who else? I know I'm missing more notable shops and stops, but these are close to the fairgrounds, or as close as the 101.....

    Did I mention the atmosphere?

The inflatable stadium? No thanks. Keep it at the Dustbowl if that's the case.....

I too, went to one of the WoW shows there and....dismal. All brand spanking new real estate that was shoved down our throats. Phuggem. I've seen nicer looking prisons.

Hell YES! I love that night each year. It's definitely a highlight for me. Good times, and great people.

The stadium has been mentioned. Goodguys has looked into it for the show, but it is not zoned for outdoor events. Sounds strange, I know, but it is still considered farm land apparently and events are supposed to be inside. Weird government red tape stuff.

The reason is probably that Gary has been there and has seen it.

It's not a charming fairground like Des Moines or St Paul. No trees...no gr*** or cool architecture. No way it's better than WestWorld.

There is cool architecture at Westworld?

Sort of a shortage of trees and gr*** around here.

I know of one HUGE gr*** and tree filled area down here that can be seen from I-10 and I-17, would be a great place for a show if it were not for all of those pesky head stones in the way of parking :)

The hard thing about getting ready for that event is getting the giant clowns out of there for the weekend.

Yeah, you can't throw a rubber squeaky toy into the desert and let them run free range anymore. Too many high dollar styrofoam and stucco condos springing up around the horse stables.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that there was any cool architecture at WW...only that cool old buildings add charm to many other fairgrounds, but not at the AZ fairground.

Kirk!, I am not doubting the zoning laws, heck my homestead is surrounded by horse property (gotta love old Phoenix) so I undersrtand how wonky reality is. But, I wonder how the fairgrounds gets around the laws for their Crash-Derby's every year? I haven't been to the State Fair in ages, carnies are not as magical as they once were, but I do know they still have those events and they are outside.

They may have applied for different zoning.

The stadium keeps saying they are trying to do it.

I thought KIRK! was talking about the new Football stadium in Glendale, not the fairgrounds. I had heard a rumor during my days at RB's that Goodguys was entertaining the idea of moving to the Cardinal's stadium.

That's YOUR opinion. I think it ****S, but it's your opinion.
    ...that's my opinion.

KIRK, that show could go down entirely free of the actual Coliseum portion. Honestly, I wasn't even thinking of the Coliseum in the first place, but it sure wouldn't HOYT!

Talk about ambiance!! What, like the "locals" are going to care? I used to work for a guy who's "located" there.

Kirk, on another site, guys were *****ing about spectator admission at Rainbeck being 17 bucks. Complained about the economy, gas prices, Bush...........and, how could you raise the rate? When I mentioned your (GG) expenses increase also, and that the fairgrounds ain't free, I got flamed pretty good. They seemed suprised that you guys have expenses........like, how much could they possibly charge to rent the fairgrounds? Well, DUH!

Oh, I get that all the time. People just see dollars that come in, not what goes out. Many of the venues Goodguys rents are well into six figures...just for the rental for ONE event. That doesn't include salaries, trucking the supplies around, toilets, security, insurance...on and on and on. Plus, the venues get EVERY CENT from spectator parking and food vending.

It's always funny to me that somehow some people think that Goodguys prices should be inversely proportionate to gas and hotel prices. Unfortunately Goodguys has to pay for them too.

Yea, people are ungreatfrul A-holes when it comes to this stuff. There is never a single thought of what GoodGuys' overhead is at a 3 or 4 day event. Gee I wonder why everyone has a good time at the shows?... Oh yea it's because Goodguys pays huge amounts of money to make sure all the details are just right. A lot of people also don't think about the fact that they have events land on the same weekend at least a couple times a year. That means they have to dish out more to employ, lodge, and organize both shows and pay for two venues, etc...I for one think it's a good thing that they make a little money as well, otherwise they wouldn't be able to continue putting on fantastic shows. My 2 cents and a mini rant, sorry, back on topic!

I agree Brian, I think if the Goodguys makes LOTS and lots of money, that that is fine as well. It's the free enterprise system at it's best! I'd rather pay the GGs some cash in exchange for a truly fun weekend, as opposed to paying high rent for some stale major league ball game ANY DAY!! People (some more than others) have an inherent ability to *****. Don't *****, just don't go.

Anyway, speaking of *****ing, don't mis-understand this proposal of venue change as *****ing, I'm going to continue enjoying the show regardless of where it is. I just know that the greater consensus of valley car guys that I'm around would like to see it at the fairgrounds.....
