They used to back before it was all pavement. In the late seventies I took my 6 month old Lab puppy up there. It was one of the monsoon years. Every intersection was a muddy lake. All the vendors said "you should be ashamed of yourself for bringing her out in weather like this". I said she's lucky I'm not a duck hunter and she's out every weekend in weather like this. Of course she loved the weather and exercise.
I usually take my Doberman down when I go after work on tuesday/wednesday. I dont think I would take him when its busy though. (he's too big and attracts too many hot chicks)
I once stepped on an old dogs foot at Carlisle,He was alright, but I felt awful all day (Im a serious dog hunter). I dont think its really the best idea. You see a lot more dogs at Carlisle than at Hershey.
I don't take my dog to a hot rod show for the same reason I don't take my hot rod to a dog show. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong crowd. Instead of enjoying what I went to see I'm worried about what I brought with me and how to take care of it. Are you trying to show off your dog to car people? Years ago I was at a show when a large dog (on a short leash) mistakenly went on the wrong side of a car's display ropes. The owner's hand was locked in the short leash and the dog and owner proceeded to pull several stanchions down because the rope was tied to the stanchions. The stanchion at the rear of the car headed directly for the FRESHLY CANDY PAINTED REAR FENDER OF A GORGEOUS '49 MERC. Yep, made contact. Dented and gouged the fender, the stainless, and the skirt. Dark red candy, real easy to match, I'm sure. The dog owner tried to get away. The car owner was PISSED and was going to literally kill the dog and owner. Fortunately level headed people quickly got between the two and stopped any escape or prison sentences. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong crowd. Dogs at shows are viewed like ill mannered children and shows. Every owner is thinking "keep that damned thing away from my car!" Sorry bro, just calling it like I see it.
I like dogs at swap meets. Once had a tunnel ram for sale. Dog knocked it off the table, broke off an ear (on the manifold, not on the dog) and the owner got to buy his dog an intake. Good boy,,,whos the good doggie?
Yeah, dogs, you can always count on a dog to ruin a good car event. It never ends good. Usually thousands of dollars of damage and pools of blood everywhere they go. A couple dogs at an out door car swap - terrible, just terrible. That is why I don't go to parks any more - too many dogs causing all kinds of damage left and right.
They don't want spectators bringing dogs there, vendors are allowed to bring them if they are kept quiet and are not what are considered 'guard dogs", Shepards, Rotts, Pitts, Mastiffs, etc. This used to be posted in the vendor packets but I don't see anything about it this year, they seem more concerned with blocks of wood under all the table legs to protect the blacktop.
If they had Port-O- Johns for poochs,it might be OK.I was at a meet this year and a guy had a nice little restored bike in his stall.Dog liked it too and "marked" it.Owner went ballistic. Leave them at home.
I personally don't like pets at car shows-I'm fine with a vendor's nice old lab or Golden under the table, but the visitors walking around are always not paying attention to their pets if they're looking at parts, or cars, or someone else's WAG. Plus, as a vet, lots of dogs aren't real excitied to see/smell me either which distracts me from enjoying myself. Overall, in Pennsylvania, you've got some real liability as a dog owner, especially if your pet is on the "DOG LIST". And if the day is warm, your pet has a real chance of becoming dehydrated or ending up with burned blacktop feet. Leave 'em home.
Why would anyone take a dog to a car event? The same goes for idiots with baby buggies. Leave em home.
You left out the fun stuff. Type 1: moron attendee repeatedly tries to feed beer to someone else's uninterested, quiet dog on leash, then tries to pry open the dog's mouth, finally dog snaps at him - dog owner sued, swap meet promoter sued. Type 2: moron dog owner's intentionally psychotic pit bull rips face off passing child - dog owner sued, swap meet promoter sued. Type 3: moron dog owner lets dog run loose, dog squashed flat when suddenly running in front of car - car owner sued, swap meet promoter sued. There are only 2 kinds of swap meet promoters: Those who insist that you sign the waiver saying you were warned not to bring a dog and you agreed, and complete idiots.
This Hershey story is O/T but I thought some of you would get e kick out of it,.. About 15 years ago My buddy Mark and I are at Hershey,.. it's early and we see this camper with a woman sitting behind a card table with a bunch of baked goods on the table,... she is sitting amidst all he husbands priceless parts ,.... she made and sold fresh baked goods and coffee right out of the camper,... we go over to buy some and as we approach we see a big sign hanging on the front of the table that said ,........... "Hoe-Maid Baked Goods" So right after we buy our coffee and brownies, Mark asked "who's da' Hoe that made these ? " , she gets really offended, then I asked who made the sign ? she said her husband made it for her,.... I said you better look at it. She comes around front takes a look at the sign and rips it off the table,..... as she's wadding it up to throw away shes yelling at the top of her lungs BILL !!!!,... BILL!!!! ( he must have been out looking for parts),....... I wouldn't have wanted to walk back to that if I was Bill. Oh yeah,.and by the way, they had a dog !
I've owned several dogs and cats over the years, and loved all of them. However, I wouldn't take one to a swap meet any more than I'd take it to a wedding.
Nothing worse than walking along and having some guys dog drop a steamer...dogs shouldn't go to swap meats, car shows, home depot, your kids soccer game, to pick up your kids at school...there's some idiot out here who picks up his kids with his three big dogs and always gets pissed when the younger kids come up to pet them...if you want to be Paris Hilton or Zsa Zsa Gabor and lug it around in a bowling bag then fine but if it doesn't fit in a bowling bag leave it at home...he's probably happier there
