Oh, Jesus. Have you ever seen a Model A?

This thread started of with some valid concerns and now it has turned into a newbie revolt! Right down the crapper!

  2. Story: When I was a kid, Frank's Mobil in Littlerock CA was where the few hot rodders in town hung out. I started out riding my bicycle there and wiping windows to impress Frank in hopes of a part time job. They'd let me hang around and listen to their lies and tall tales. I was sort of honored to work as a Gunk brush there. I got to ride in an A-V8 roadster, got to go with one of the guys to race on Avenue N, Got rides to school in cool cars sometimes. All this at age 12 to about 15. But, I had to endure a lot of being poked fun at, getting sent to the parts store for muffler bearings and I got set up as the butt of jokes. 'Cause I was the KID. Eventually, a new, new kid came along and when the older dudes played tricks on him, they'd look at me and wink, to let me be in on the joke. It was a right of passage that still means a lot to me. It was like that when I was an independent trucker, had to be the FNG for a while with that too.

The young people who can really get what I'm talking about above will be OK here. The thin skinned little crybabies that make up a big part of the current generation can go suck eggs. They would have been run out of Frank's Mobil with their tails between their legs too. The HAMB is like real life, only better...

seeing how this thread has taken a curve..im gonna ask ..

why is spelling so important to a bunch of hot rodders?

huh?..is it like you have never made a spelling error in your life?

I have seen many on here that bitch about spelling errors..make their own mistakes in spelling..

lets see if we can spin this thread off in a different direction..

    how weak is that?

trust me ..its not that they are perfect spellers..they are using a word processing program to correct all their errors and than posting it..try to write with out it..than see how f ing good you are.

  10. I find it a bit humorous that people seem to put so much stock in how many posts a person has, or that he is an FNG or whatever. There are people on here like Dick Spadaro that knew more on his first post then most of the rest of us will ever know. And I have seen some really stupid things said by people with 1,000, 2,000 or more posts. Sorry, but number of posts is just not relevant. Period
The military comparison doesn't really apply here either as it relates to starting at the beginning and being a FNG. When you join the military you really are an FNG with no clue how to do things in the manner that will be expected of you. But here it is a matter of life experience and what you have done and learned and sharing that experience. If you have built quality traditional cars and understand what it takes to do so but have only recently discovered the HAMB, you have information to share that can benefit all here right from day one. By the same token, if you are new to the entire scene, then by all means listen, search, and try and ask intelligent questions instead of trying to impress everyone with what you think you know (which probably isn't much). If a newbie (to the lifestyle, not necessarily just new to the board) asks a question that seems legit but maybe uses wrong terminology, give em a chance, try and set em straight and if they get it, great - if not Flame On.
I also find it quite amusing that so many get tripped up over the dreaded "R" word and yet it's The Shifters who claim to have invented the term (and maybe they did) and they are held in high esteem (and rightly so). Yeah the meaning has probably shifted since it was first coined, maybe everyone hasn't got that memo.
I guess my point is if someone comes on here and is genuinely interested in learning more about the gospel and makes a few mistakes, cut em a little slack. If they think that a fender less 40's truck with lime green rally wheels, skulls, spider grille and crappy, unsafe build quality is the coolest shit, feel free to rip em up :D

  11. Words are like nuts and bolts and sentence structure is how they are welded together. Are you an advocate of incorrect bolts and poor welds, Von Rigg?

not the same thing and you know it..Some people i know cant even read, and they could weld or bolt togeather some dam nice stuff!

not to mention..not many older people are keyboard punchers..the real old school guys know what im talking about...

I do not use artificial intelligence to correct my spelling..if I made the mistake than i made it..Im not relying on some word processor to tell me i fucked up..and really how important is that in the big picture here..?

I think that is probably the crux of the matter. If you are sincere in your desire to learn, then read for awhile. There is so much information on here that you hardly need to ask a question on most things. I have close to 40 years of mechanical experience and I want to share it with others. That is what will keep it going generation to generation.

But trolls like to push buttons. They aren't here to share or learn. The best thing to do is what Denise said, lurk awhile. Answer a question here and there, ask a question here and there and you are getting what traditional hot rodding is all about. "Rat" stuff is as much a silly trend as fiberglass "check writer rods" To me the getting in there and getting dirty working ,sharing stories with my friends, and just being myself. Thats what I like about here, you can do that. PorknBeaner is one of my favorites, good old sarcasm makes me laugh, he reminds of the good times. But everyone else too, there is so much knowlwedge and experience here, many others have been mentioned.

The best thing to do is not be a troll. Read, make your bones, and share it.

this hobby will never die. I , along with countless others, have been building stuff well before we discovered the HAMB and will continue to do so well afterword. I hate every car except for the ones I build and Pat Hamptons 54 chevy, and to be honest I hate the builder too. I dont care if you have a 98 s-10 with no fenders or a model a on handmade George barris rails and a vondutch pinstripe engine with all the winfield crome and period correct coon tail on the antenna. who gives a shit about what some douche bag said to you on the computer. If you can find your anwser on here then go to the book store or library and get a book on how to do it. You could probably build the most perfect hot rod in the world and I guarantee you that some douche bag on here will tell you it's an abomination. I want tech week, not pussy whine every other fucking thread. And fuck you for saying nasty shit about Travis Barker too, you know who you are.

If you quit rodding because someone made fun of you, your a wimp. If you hate the HAMB and love rods and do it your own way, great. If the HAMB ceases to exist, people will keep doing the same thing. As far as FNG's go, do a search for owen thomas. FNG, development team for the Olds V8. More knowledgeable than most of us I would say.

Just a few more things. Alot of people get bent out of shape for being flamed when the rules of this board are posted and are required reading for anyone new. Most of the stuff I see guys get flamed for are off topic questions and posts, which in my mind is perfectly fine to flame over. I will agree sometimes it can be rather harsh but hell thats life. If you read the rules and understand what the board is all about you save yourself alot of grief. And if your questions dont fit the hamb im sure there are other places to find the answers.
Also the hamb is really tame in regards to flaming compared to some other boards i go on, most of the other boards I go on (not all auto related) if you ask a question that has been posted before you get flamed 10x worse than here because you didnt do a search. And thats another thing alot of guys can save themselves from getting flamed, alot of questions have been answered before and if you use the search function on the board you usually can find the answer without asking.
In regards to the "FNG" title, who cares about those titles really? if you are experienced and join the board as a "FNG" anyone with half a brain will know that you know your shit depspite what your title is. FNG just means you are new to the hamb and not new to the hobby, take it with a grain of salt

the HAMB has given me Aids.

  22. Hmmmmmmmm, don't feel too sorry for the "young" FNG's. When I came on here as an FNG and first asked a dumb question, I got smoked and I was 62 at the time and have been hot rodding since the 50's. However, the smoking was "hey FNG..introduce yourself first...then ask the question. Now I did not consider that to be rude. In fact, I felt it was correct of them. So, I did an introduction, posted it and then aske the dumb question.

    I'm 19. I get it.

I know where my build is going, and I know what will look right and what would look out of place. Things just need to be done with my little shoebox, its not going to be a gasserkustomstreetratrod. It's going to be a mild kustom with very little put into it, but it's correct I guess some of you would say.

Rat Rod is a terrible term, but I don't get mad when people say it about my car. I say whatever, because I know they are the ones driving a Honda-DOOSHEBAG out of the cruise night/event etc.

It is a little tough posting on here, and I was just raised 'with it' I guess. I'm pretty good at what I do, and I shut my damn mouth when someone is explaining something I am unsure of.

Maybe this is 'posting when I shouldn't be posting' but I'm just doing what I gotta do, and the HAMB gives me what I need to do, and helps me when I have a question, so FNG's, don't rush, sit back, READ, and take it in. You'll get it. Sooner than later hopefully.

I haven't read this entire post, but the whole jump on the newbie and tackle him for not doing an "intro" is stupid and I've seen some good people who have something to offer get hammered by self-appointed know-it-alls for asking a question. It's lame. We have way to many members to be worried about that stuff any more.

If somebody asks about a Camaro, or Mopar, or a rat rod, or an old 70's tire.... either shut up or help point them in the right direction.

Teach your children well....we all have a responsibility to tell youngun's what is cool and what ain't.Education and not ridicule will teach these guys and gals. A lot of young people are entering the car culture with some misplaced definitions of cool. The car I see here is cool and I would consider it a rat......the problem in my opinion is......

I think that the term Rat Rod is too widely used in general. I do love new or old Gow jobs, jitneys any of the cool terms. The problem in my opinion is that some of the "lifestyle" folks don't police their own. For instance, me and a couple of freinds, some of them Hambers, went to the Carb Kings show out here in the Baltimore area. At this "show" there was the largest collection of junk I've ever seen. Yeah there were a lot of legit cool rods, cars, whatever terminology you want to use; But close your eyes and imagine....oh wait do this after you read..... a 61 ford pick-up with some homemade shit grille and the front fenders cut off rusted to death, he calls it a rat rod, me and most of you would call it junk. Another guy took the time to mount a model A body on a late model Corvette chassis, even took the time to widen the grille shell to cover the stock radiator. It was hideous. Another guy cut the roof off of a perfectly good 37 Chevy coupe, slapped a top off of another car on and bolted a bunch of other bullshit on it. That car was a laughing stock.

This rusted slapped and cobbled together junk does not make a rat rod and most definetly doesn't have any thing to do with traditional.

Clark, a frequent poster here on the hamb, builds some cool shit. I would consider some of his cars rats and I mean that with the utmost respect. Everything I've seen Clark build is traditional. Not Junk!!!!

A rat rod can be a cool term.....the problem is that the rat rod scene has been infiltrated with guys (and gals) that throw together junk , call it a rat rod and that's what the general public sees as unsafe and wrong. "Public Opinion" is a pretty strong factor in how a term is perceived.

Back in the beginning of this car culture of ours, the term "hot rodder" was not seen in a good light. Now we all consider ourselves "hot rodders". It took a lot of work and twice as much time to clean up that bad image. "Rat Rods" ain't bad......police the junk and don't be afraid to tell those who stray, that ain't the way it was and never will be. Be kind and educate, if they throw you attitude then you can ridicule them, that's when they deserve it.

A brief reminder....in the Ole' Days.....most all of the prmer and unfinished cars were awaiting funds to finish them. Primer was generally ridiculed and shiney was where it was at!!!!

Every time this subject comes up here I hear the voices in my head telling me " This lowlife huckster really means he can't find enough ignorant newbys to hawk his overpriced horde of old junk to right now.*"
There's pleanty of young guys doing the old car thing, just not too many for the market to inflate to fast.

I'm a newbie to you? Who are you? I'm not a newbie to hotrodding and in the next couple of months when I write my licence I'll be a certified automechanic (a field in which professionally I haven't been a "newbie" in years). After spending 23 of my 28 years going to car shows, swap meets, friend's and familly's garages and eight years in the trade, I find it hard to think I'd be called a "newbie", but then you don't know me. When my band was playing for a local charity cruise (Cruisin' For MS) and the head organizer called me to ask if we were available, he called me Mr. Desparois and during the show/pig roast locals involved with the cruise came up because they know my car or they know me personaly. When a certain local garage owning familly puts on thier yearly barbecue/car show they ask me personaly to come out and bring my car (and my band). No one I know would be disrespectful enough (at least to my face) to call me "newbie" anything.

it seems to me that the younger generation(mine) is the one that does most of the flaming, with the older oned being the voice of reason. ti all goes back to a fgeneral lack of manners and impersonallity in the inner net

  29. Does FNG make you feel better then?:D

^^^^^^^^^^^^note use of facetious grinning smiley.
That said, lets get back to talking hotrods.
