This is funny because you are a newbie here, just like if you moved across the country and settled in another town, you'd be a newbie there. I lived the first half of my life being a newbie (Army brat), it's not a big deal, you introduce yourself, you act polite, and you move on. Unlike when I was a kid and I got an attitude, at least no one here is gonna whup your ass. I got railed a few times when I was newbie here and on other boards. I don't take it personally and I've found it to be the norm. So please quit being so DAMNED SENSITIVE! :D

I'm 18. Been into "old cars" my whole life. I started with muscle cars, but recently I've really taken an interest in traditional hot rods now that I sold off my cars. Coming from the muscle car scene I didn't really have an idea of what was fine to say and what was considered taboo. I've started a few posts about cars I've looked at and a few about looking for pictures of a certain year/model. I've definitely made a few comments that irked some people. In the real world people are gonna say shit to you (bosses, managers etc) and you just gotta take it, shrug it off and keep goin. If you've lived in the real world at all I don't think someone getting pissed at you over the internet is going to scare you away from anything.

Oh BTW I'm ASE in Steering and Suspension, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems and Engine Performance. I know somebody beat me to the punch but you’re a newbie here, not to the auto hobby/industry. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means you’re new here and if you hang around long enough you'll be one of the regulars. No big deal. However, if you come here and start talking trash about the site and its customs (norms not Kustoms) and you have only been here a little while people are going to get pissed, and rightly so. We all dealt with somone giving us crap at some point and we decided to hang around.

You don't realize this is not a just a forum. How many HAMB'ers have you met face to face? Have you ever hung out with the fine guys and gals of this "forum", ever been to HAMB event? This a group of friends, not just an internet forum. We hang out, we work on each other’s stuff, we wheel and deal and a lot of us become good friends who respect each other. Get your shit straight before you start badmouthing people.

Post Script: I love the bat wings I just wish that guy would have put some pants on before they took the picture:eek:

  6. But I can't afford paint... I blew all my money on a blown flatty :D

Just kidding... I'd like to post some pics of my buddies very traditional "T" that isn't painted and most likely never will get painted... it has a dual quad tunnel rammed 440 Chrysler. It would probably get the "RR" label right away although it isn't. In my eyes paint is just another stage in driveability. This guy built the entire car... he'll be helping me with mine... and although my wife, child, dog, home and taxes eat heavily into my budget the car will be pretty damn'ed traditional with a few caveats of safety upgrades and a properly done trad suspension. It probably won't have a nice paint job or paint or matching rust and primer colors... and I don't give a rat's ass... I just want to be able to safely drive it and tear it apart to "finish" it when I can.

Lastly... I've been on the "bash the rat-rod" band wagon here... quite often throwing rotten eggs, vegetables and fruit at them... but you have to admit... some of those cars are a f-ing joke... and worthy of a laugh. If you've never seen one of these threads and not laughed... you have no sense of humor. I've also had more deleted posts, deleted threads and closed threads than I care to admit. I'm a slow learner some times... I also like to push the boundries... and for my last trick... I'll STFU :)

You, who are on the road,
Must have a code that you can live by.
    And so, become yourself,
Because the past is just a good bye.
    Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams,
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.

I honestly think people LIKE to get the fights and arguments going with the new guys on this site, that is why some get flamed so bad. It is so obvious when someone is trying to start a fight or get someone riled up.

HAMB is a great place for anyone to learn a little knowledge about Hot Rods. If your planning a project, and don't know which way to go with it, you can search the forums, or go to the tech archive, there is way more info on here than anyone will ever be able to gather. As for as the term Rat Rod......it's just like Hot Rod, Traditional, Tail Dragger, Sled, Cruiser, Topless, Fat Fendered, Hi Boy, etc.....it's just a word, or phrase. Theres one thing I have noticed before, you hardly never see anyone trailering a Rat Rod, there usually the rusty shitt being driven to the shows and enjoyed, while some of the other are....remember the old one..TRAILER QUEENS. I have said it many times before, call it what you want, but burn the damn tires off it and enjoy, were only getting one chance in life to enjoy them....No question is a stupid question, it's only stupid if your to dumb to answer it and get all mad because the other party may be brighter than you are.......I'll shut up and let everyone else get a shot at this.

  16. I think it is a great idea! I am at that point in my own build and considdering copying you!

  17. hey, im 23 ergo a rep of the "younger generation" and you can't annoy me or abuse me enough to scare me away from being a steadfast stalwart gearhead and traditional hotrodder, LEADED GAS FLOWS IN MY VEINS BABY! .. but.
im not everyone, the rest of my gen is a wee bit on the skittish side, you gotta baby em along for a bit and teach em, all they know is what they saw on tv or in a mag, and yea their all morons, so? i am to, but i still learn and they will to if you
teach em, SO TEACH EM DAMNIT , or watch hotrodding die , and yea it WILL be your fault.

Teach them we will, on our terms not theirs. True hotrodders gather here to learn. True hotrodders live here. This place has been likened as an old garage hangout. Full of years of experience. Both mistakes and victories. If you want to learn, grow thick skin, get ready to be flogged and your reward will be to learn this crazy skill and have the satisfaction and the opportunity of presenting it to the next generation.

When i joined i was excited to get in and ask questions. I over looked the introduce yourself. I got a little feedback, but overall i got over it. I was into building rat rods and when i came to this site and was pointed out how to search for info it changed my passion. I no longer wanted to throw parts on and use walmart clearance items to build my car. I have gained alot of information and scraped the sbc for a 235. never would have known about the motor and transmission choices if not here. I just sit at my computer and want to jump in and talk, but over all nobody will reply. But i did not get mad or jump to another site. I sit in the dark and look for the information i need. I am about to build a car with your info, so please pat yourself on the back. When i get some of the thing done i plane to make a post and show everybody what i have learned from the hamb community. I might even put in some cow bells(see i pay attention lol)

I think what this all boils down to is first impressions.

Think about it this way.... Which one would you be more inclined to help/school/teach/educated/etc?

    Example 1:
If you're out working in your shop, and some kid comes screaming up in his ricer, gets out - crotch of his pants drooping to his knees, piercings, ball cap turned sideways, walking funny because he has to hold his pants up with one hand to keep them from falling down, and comes up to you and says:

"Dude, man, that is like, an awesome rat rod!"

    Example 2:
If you're out working in your shop, and some kid comes rolling up in his import car, gets out - blue jeans pulled up and secured with a belt, decent lookin t-shirt, looks semi-intelligent, comes up to you and says:

"I like your old car. Could I ask you some questions about it?"

Maybe these are extremes, but they do, to a given point, represent what we are 'seeing' here on the board when some newbies jump in here and start posting. It does boil down to the first impressions. The kid in example 1 would be sent on his way with a good ass chewing for having come racing up into my driveway - regardless of his future intentions.

The kid in the second example is one I would definitely take the time to 'feel out' and see what he's looking for. We all look for help and want to ask questions, but it is all about how you present yourself. If you present yourself like you are a retard, then the world is going to treat you like one!

We don't cut people slack, or pamper their 'feelings' because we don't do that here! I've had some stuff ridiculed, and some work I had done recently was somewhat insulted - even though I was damned proud of it and what it represented. In a subtle way, I called the guy an asshole. He took it as a good ribbing, and considered it for what it was worth. Hell, I consider myself an asshole, but then again, I've been called many things - even by 6th graders!

Take things for what they are worth. I considered the flaming I took for my posts sort of my HAMB Initiation. I survived it, and am better now because of it. Yeah, I've got a high post count, and I post often - mainly because I just don't get out into the garage as much as I'd like to. It's hard to do sometimes, as I just don't have the motivation to get it done in addition to my day, and with the frustrations I have teaching some of my 6th graders, I don't want to take that stuff out on my projects when I get home. Rather, I may sit here and read about the trials and tribulations of others and relax accordingly. My projects'll get done in time.

Stupid people shouldn't waste the oxygen I need to survive. Bad thing is, Darwin'll sometimes get'em, but what is really a shame is that through my studies and life experiences is that I've learned that stupidity is painful, but the problem is that those who are chronic sufferers of stupidity have become immune to the pain.

I deal with situations like this daily as a 6th grade math teacher. One of the newest things this year is my boys all calling each other 'gay' - enough so to the point of wanting to fight about it! My response to them is: "Are you gay? No? Then what difference does it make?" I usually accompany this with the little "Sticks and stones" song accompanied with a butt shaking dance, all done with a whining voice. They usually get the point.

Bottom line is that no one can make you feel inferior or bad about yourself with your permission.

I tell my kiddos this all the time. I tell them I'll always answer their questions, but I won't promise not to make fun of them! We all have a good time.

I saw that too, and may give that idea a try on the Dubble A.

I think this sort of says it all. We give each other crap, and to some it looks like fighting, but it is just crap. Pick on the FNGs, if they man up, they might be keepers. If not, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

To me, this one was just too much. Too Effing funny!

I am a new guy here, 67 yrs young , had a great time
at the big show in Denison Tx, hung out with some of
the hamb folks, they made me feel welcome even
with some of my dumb ass questions..

all driving their old fashion hot rods, that is the way
my six yr old grand daughter describe them today when I
    show here the pix..

I asked her what she called my 52, I was in the back of pack
for a reason, did not want to mess up the look, anyway
    she said..." your's
is doc hudson",.........I replied, it is a chevy,
she was not about to change her mind,, to her it was doc hudson

sorry about getting off topic...........all I know is that if I wake up each morning breathing, then I am good to go......I am not about to worry about the new guy or the old guy.... kind of reminds me of seniority when I worked, now retired, folks that had it liked it, guys that did not have it did not like it.........

I do enjoy this site, all types of vehicles, the work folks put in to get them the way they want them........and I love all the old type hot rods..

Remember that old line from a Woody Allen movie? It went something like this... "Those who can't play ball, teach gym. Those who can't teach gym, teach driver's education."

So how about this parody? "Those who can't race cars, build hot rods. Those who can't build hot rods, build rat rods."

  24. Fuck me silly...

Pretty soon HP and Dell will have to put a built-in Kleenex dispenser on little pink computers so Hot Rodding doesn't shit the bed and start pushin' daisies.

If it dies because some drippy twats get flamed on the HAMB... I'll personally take all the blame.

Well... me and the little green space men when they come and blow up the Earth... leaving just a vapor cloud and some poorly welded suspension components floating aimlessly in the vast blackness.

I think a lot of things can be defined as to why someone is here instead of somewhere else. I like the sense of humor a lot of guys have here, it reminds me of how I grew up playing sandlot baseball all summer as a kid, working on the "old guys cars" so they might slip us a beer (and unknowingly learn a helluva lot about how things work)and working among guys like myself who were motivated and took a little pride in how they presented themselves. If you couldn't take a teasing, go in the house and stay there. We worked our way up from shoveling gravel or choking rig bits 12 hours on and 12 off for weeks on end to Operators and Project Managers. Loading trucks to driving trucks, and eventually maybe owning a few or becoming a freight broker. Doing warranty work and barely able to pay our tool bill to being the "transmission guy" doing bench work. One thing in common? Thick skin and hell fire determination. If you didn't have it, you couldn't play and win on any terms that you can call your own (in other words without being a brown nose or a college educated 90 day wonder that seems to get you anything today) in any of these places. If there is anything of value we are LOSING it is that.

I love my old cars, I take pride in my accomplishments and I am sorry, but I can needle with the best of them. I am not here to make a name for myself, prove to anyone I know about XYZ than anyone, create a drama to rain on someones parade. But I will tease folks, without remorse. And I expect them to tease me back. Not let their lower lip quiver and take their ball home.

Grow some skin. If you are a troll just trying to stir things for the fun of it this place isn't for you. But heaven help us if we can't have a laugh at each others expense once in awhile. It makes teaching and learning fun if you know how to take it right. If you screw up, don't bull up and start to cry or throw a tantrum, think of a zinger to throw back, or take your teasing like a person with a little dignity. Laugh! :D

    Remember:

We're laughing with you, not at you. Well not really, we're laughing at you

This thread reminds me of the old men in the neighborhood sitting on the porch with their BB guns and white lightning yelling at the "whippersnappers" to "GET THE HELL OFF THE LAWN!"
Damn kids don't know how to show proper respect to us geezers...

You are the perfect example, and that is why I said what I said earlier in this thread. You ran off at the mouth about doors fitting, not knowing that the car was made that way, thus you got a lashing. Now you say there is a lack of respect....how do you think the person who built that Model A would feel after you said his/her doors don't fit right? I'm guess disrespected might fall into the category. The good...hopefully you learned not to run your mouth until you can back it up with facts, or now at least you know what to expect if you don't. I'm usually a real nice guy,in fact right now I'm showing a newby the ropes at work, I teach, I break his stones, he learns, and has a good time while doing it, I'm willing to bet this is the way in most shops around the country.Someday we'll all look back on this and laugh about it.:D

I'm one of the newer guys on here, not that young, but I don't worry about the shit comments i get sometimes, if someone calls me an asshole i'll call them one back. :) I joined this forum because I like traditional rods, actually i like all kinds of cars, well except a lot of the newer crap coming out. but I get hell because I have an import, the stereotypes of the guys who have the imports, are just as bad as the stereotypes that a lot of people have about "rat rods", I grew up around traditional rods,so I know the stereotypes aren't true at all. I have very good memories of my uncles T bucket he built in the basement, and of my dad working on the 28 chrysler, which maby someday will get done. We always had a garage full of tools and neat junk and rusted cars out in the yard. I grew up taking things apart to see how they worked.
just because I have an older import, doesn't mean i go around with a big wing and a fart can on it, driving around cars on the road. I've spent many years working on my car,and i've always kept it low key looking, I am just as happy to go to a show and look at the traditional rods as I am to work on my car. maby if some people will stop being so hateful towards some of us because of what we drive,we all might get along better. hate the ones who go buzzing around driving like idiots, don't hate the guys who have really put work into their cars, and are careful with them because they don't want them to get messed up. We are all car guys, whether it's front wheel or rear wheel drive, I know there are idiots, but there is a growing community of us who are building real cars, and we enjoy your cars just as much as you do. by the way,I only have one sticker on my import. It's a SOHIO one,the older Ohio guys will understand that one. it confuses lots of people down here, but the native ohioians get it right away.
