I've used the Hamb as a sounding board a few times, just to get some feedback on things my brain gets locked in on. Just to get some perspective. Yeah sometimes you get flamed, but then again sometimes the ideas are so stupid I really deserved it. But I always get perspective.

I think sometimes new people have a craving to "fit in" which makes it hard for them to accept the hazing process. It is kind of ironic though - hot rodding at its core has always been about building awesome cars and non-conformity. So long as all the non conformists conform to the standards of non conformity, everyone will get along. If not, the beatings will continue...

WTF? I got flamed, thats just wrong, what the hell. Thats it, I'm leaving hot rodding for good. You guys all suck, I want my mummy.........
Where are the keys to my ratvolksrodricer?

Yeah, I know I'm a prick, seriously and honestly I am.
Like I said respect MUST be earned, that is the only way you can gain it. Respect is a major thing in my life and the common courtesy you extend to someone is NOT respect. They are two vastly different things.
I extend the same measure of courtesy to all, unless they managed to prove that they didn't deserve it at the start. (For an example go back to the flame thread that I think prompted this thread)
Some people build on that courtesy and it does indeed become respect. It is the hardest thing to earn and the easiest to loose.
I am not looking for others respect and most certainly not on over a message board!
I dunno, maybe the people who complain about being flamed and bang on about wanting respect are somewhat insecure. I couldn't give a fuck if you wanna flame me or don't respect me. I haven't done anything in my life that is respectable.

Well, fuckit, I'm gonna sit on that pile of poorly welded suspension parts and wait for the little green men.
Reading some of these whiny posts has been a lot like masturbating with a cheese grater, slightly amusing but mostly painful.

Hey, if Hot Rodding dies blame me too.

    Doc.

    Doc, that was hilarious....

  4. I've started and sold some forums, and one currently has 132,000 members. The HAMB is great, but a little snooty. A lot of older guys on here come off like jerks when someone asks an innocent question. I have a pretty thick skin so when I showed up in Feb of this year with my '51 merc with the crappy bumpers and paint job I did not take offense at folk's comments but I can see where a newb would.

Spoken like a true Texan. Take that how you find it.

Nothing's wrong with the HAMB. The first time I posted I asked about a part I was looking for and got my hat handed to me. I fought back like crazy until someone posted about my lack of introduction and complimented me on holding my own.

I appreciate this site for what it is, not what I want it to be.

Maybe if we quit pandering to the 'children' all time and encourged them to grow up, this world wouldn't be going to hell in a handbasket.

  6. And now back our regularly scheduled question.
I don't think we are losing the young guys. This hasn't been a young man's game for a long time. Not since the first generation started to fade and the next one came on the car scene. They didn't want to be like their dads. They wanted their own auto identity. This "Hobby" "Lifestyle" "sport", call it what you will, has been growing older for a long time. When it first started it was high school guys, after the war, they were a little older, early twenties. In the 60's it was a lot of 30-40 year olds. By the 70's magazines were starting the battle cry - where are the next generation of rodders coming from ? We need to do something! By the 80's the average age of a rodder was probably closer to 50, maybe even 60. And if anything, I think it has now come full circle.
I have met a bunch of younger dudes through here that are bringing it back to the forefront. Yeah some of them are a bit out there style wise, but they will find their way.
Look at a lot of the hot new builders, they aren't my age or Brizio's, they are a younger generation - Jimmy White, Troy Ladd, Pinkees, Charles Franklin, Rudy Rodriguez, even Jimmy Shine isn't that old and there are a whole host of others out their practicing their skills and coming up through the ranks. And look at the guys working in those shops, younger still and learning the craft! And that doesn't include all the young guys that work at home in a small garage while balancing school or a young family and do it not for business but for the love of it. So I think Hot Rodding is in good hands for the future and a few dickwads that feel it necessary to flame a guy on the HAMB isn't going to change that. They may not come back to the HAMB but believe it or not Traditional Hot Rodding was around long before and will survive with or without it.

  7. the only problem here is the pussy whining cry babies are multiplying faster than rabbits on steriods , if some folks feel that their sensative little feelings have been hurt! well tough shit! get over it and move on , ALL of us have been down this road and some of us it has been many many times no one that i know of holds a grudge , you can get flamed in one thread and praised in another , all this touchy feely feel good crap is for Dr.Phil ..

If you Google Image young generation, the first pic that comes up, is a guy from the young generation and his car.

I admit that some of the FNGs are whiny bitches but we can't assume that everyone has as much time to spend on the HAMB as those with nearly 4000 posts in a year's time. Some guys just pop on here to ask a question. They may not have the time to "lurk for a few months" before posting. These guys are no less entitled to a legitimate answer than anyone else. Help 'em out so that they come back. It's all about "spreading the gospel", right? And what's up with the "do a search" replies? I'd much rather read about hot rod issues a hundred times over than about someone's dead aunt or shop dog.

Someone should start a support group for all the thumb suckers and bed wetters that complain on here about getting "flamed" for any reason. They can all hold hands and sing insperational songs and eat toffu and shit. Its a internet forum for christ sakes. Your gonna get "flamed" sooner or later. I used to work in my uncles motorcycle shop and they used to fuck with me to no end! Even I was introducing my self as Turd Boy. And whenever I thought I had enough and deserved some respect, they just laid it on even thicker until they were convinced otherwise. Thats not only true with car and motorcycle guys, it's that way in all fields where real men are involved. Ignorant "fngs" get educated, pussies, retards and belly-achers fall by the wayside. I know there are people with nothing better to do than bust peoples balls for no reason but it's just words, and most of the time it's halarious. If all I have to do to be a member of this site is get "flamed" once and a while then it's a small price to pay for the wealth of knowledge contained here. By the way, I'm a young guy(28) and I've only ever owned "classic" cars. No one had to teach me to like old cars. I didn't have any friends that were into hot rods growing up. I just liked old cars, motorcycles, boats, planes pretty much any old machinery. If you're just in it 'cause it's the cool thing to do then it's better you get weeded out now than later so you can get the leg up on the next trend and mabey you can be the one "flaming" the new guys. Thats all I got to say about that. Now back to lurking in the dark with the rest of the newbs.

This whole thing is about learning....then more importantly, becoming the teacher. I was at a good freinds shop over the weekend. Now mind you he is 60ish (and a master fabricator) and we is still talking about getting with a still older guy to learn some more stuff.

We are all Newbies or Fng's for life.....If you aren't learning something every time you work on your shit,or on someone elses you ain't doin' it right. Bustin someones balls ain't the way to teach!!!!!

  28. What I read on the internet and what I experience at cruise nights and car shows ain't the same. The late teens and 20 and thirty somethings take a lot of pictures and ask lots of questions. If your car looks approachable (not like a total garage queen) they are interested. I hang near my car and talk to them to help be sure they are interested. Most important seems to be to let them know that any SAFE car is welcome at the cruise nights, even works in progress, to give them confidence.

  29. Some guy's on here take themselves way too seriously. They're the ones who act like an ass to a kid with a question. Some guys take the board way too seriously. They're the ones who run away when they get flamed.

The HAMB's not a street gang to get jumped into, so some of you need to lighten up. It's also not a country club, so some of you need to grow a pair and get over caring what others think if you don't say just the right thing. Anybody can say anything from behind a key board, it don't mean they are right. It's just a message board, go work on your hot rod.
