I think I'd rather screw the *****s ON the upholstery. The upholstery would make me chaff.

I am sure Bush doesn't know, as he sure as hell doesn't seem to understand that. Terror watch list anybody?

  8. That's the problem, they made all these laws to help us and protect us from ourselves and now it's damned near impossible to do anything for yourself. Then again look what happens when they let the regulations go - someone, somewhere, decides to cheat, and you have Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers, and a bunch of clowns in Washington trying to stick us with the bill when if they'd just been able to reject bad loans we wouldn't have a problem in the first place.

I almost think in your case I'd see if I could detach the garage, by cutting like 12" out of where it attaches to the house. Of course with the necessary permits. But the lawyer is a good idea.

You know, maybe that was the problem. Lawyers became lawmakers and had to ensure they'd always have work... thus you need one to understand the law. And how to get around it.

It's un-cons***utional for any gov't, local or fed, to stop you from making a living from YOUR property. The ordinances are for everyone else's protection, not just to screw biusness (although it seems that way!). If you're doing upholstery I can't see that much local harm. From home, DO NOT APPLY FOR A SALES TAX LICSENSE. Pay the sales tax on the products. Keeps you under the radar. Apply for an ***umed name just for cashing and depositing checks. Pay tax on the add'l income. You're done. **** the city and state. Nuttin they can do about it. They can only act on complaints. They can't afford much else.

BTW, I know a guy that tried the *****house gig and it didn't work. Coulda been cuz he couldn't afford the girls in the brginning and tried to run it by hand to get it started...

    Right on!

57trucker is having an addition built on his house. He lives in an older part of town and his house sits on two lots. So when he goes to get his building permit the city wants him to have his lot surveyed because it is on two lots. WTF? He has been living there for 15+ years. The city wants to "clear up" these types of lots. OK fine, but don't make it the home owners job to fix the citys problem.

FWIW this could probably be done legally, by seeking a zoning variance at a city council meeting and jumping thru a few hoops.

Most zoning people aren't trying to stop you from making a buck on the side, they're trying to keep you from changing the flavor of the neighborhood with your buck on the side.

So show them you're a reasonable person who is genuinely concerned about your neighbors, and it's probably going to involve spending to improve something. (make em feel like they won a battle) A fence, additional driveway, etc. If your house/yard isn't already well maintained, time to break out the hammer and paintbrush. You may squawk about having to shell out cash for the improvement, but ultimately it's a for-profit venture at the expense of your neighbors.

Be selfish from the start and expect a strong NO from the zoning people. They're feeling you out because if your business grows there will be growing pains with neighbors & the city. They won't give an inch today if they think you'll be obstinate and unreasonable when the growing pain strikes.

    Good luck with the business

Ok Well here is the thing.
I had a guy 2 houses down form me doing the same thing you want to do.
What happened was he had so many cars coming in and going out or just sitting at the curb no one could park there cars at there home.
Pissed off everyone he did not care. But the city did!!
So the law is if you do the work there and no one comes to your home. But the you take what you sew to them they don't care but you cant have the cars come to you.

ps they were on his **** about everything he did when he told them go fly a kit.
He had cops there 2 3 times a week till he moved
