My ford is pre coloumn lock... so pretty much you could put it in neutral and roll it.... I do have my eyes on a 79 column that is a locking column. might purchase.

but Im sure there are some other methods to keep people from stealing your hardwork.....

CAREFUL! dont give away your secret unless you want to pm me...I sure as heck dont want to steal your ride. I got no where to put it... I dont think my wife will give her spot in the garage.... I get a talking to if I leave crap in her spot. lol. cant complain my crap takes up 90 percent of the garage.

    Thanks.

Some one stole my neighbors 88 chevy p/u the other night with the column lock and did not bother my 77 F150 with the switch in the dash, the rotor is gone so it wont start if they come back for another truck. Jeff

well, I had my 96 z71 stolen last thanksgiving weekend... I was standing 3 feet from my truck at a gas station in my almost zero crime rate city. Im 6'6 250pds... at a gas station that has surveillance... only it wasnt working that day. emmm probability?? lol. luckily. insurance took good care of me. full coverage. Can you even get full coverage on old cars?

One must be careful when refreshing page... he might get surprised and wet his pants. YIKES.

  8. Simple wire interupter to the coil works (kill switch). Thieves want an easy target. They do NOT want to spend an hour looking for a switch and rewiring it.

I don't drive anything that has a tangible value, or is on anyone's "list." So far it has worked. My strange taste in cars comes in handy with that.

You know when my chevy z71 got stolen someone told me you need to get something nobody wants to steal.... buy a ford. lol. I bought a ford and have been happily a ford guy ever since. :) crap I got stopped today by a group of cops pullig every car over checking for seat belts... guy complimented my 01 supercrew. said it didnt look like an 01... I thought to myself... 01. thats only 7 years old.... not that old... I told him I had a 65 back home and engaged in conversation... even though I had my seat belt on... he said he was going to let me go with a warning... and not a ticket.. I was like for what... he said speeding. I said was I speeding... he said no. but Im told I have to give you something for stoping you. and not to worry it wouldnt show up on my record. How screwy is that? guess the quota was low this month becuase they pulled over 3 cars while I was there. shish.

  11. Plus you need to realise that most car thieves know how to "pop a column", but "hot wiring" is a lost "art".

Owning a vehicle with a standard transmission helps sometimes. I heard about an attempted car-jacking that took place in front of a pizza store a while back, where a couple of crack-heads pulled a gun on the car owner as he walked out the front door with his pizza. After taking his wallet and his car keys, they jumped into his car and found themselves stranded at the crime scene, simply because neither one of them knew how to drive a car with a standard transmission. These guys didn't even know enough to push the clutch pedal down to allow the starter turn over, and got caught trying to escape through the woods behind the store within a few minutes.

  14. When I lived in Memphis (24 cars stolen a day when I was there), I had the coil wire switch mentioned above in my 64 Pontiac 'vert. Never any problems, although no one probably ever tried since I would have had a broken window if they had (Memphis thieves didn't generally bother to jimmy a door.....just smash and go). I liked having it just the same, knowing even if they busted in, I would likely still get to keep my car. :)

I take my coil wire with me when I'm away from it. A gun would be a good idea too.

  17. i have guns! lotsa guns , and anger issues!

  18. Several of my cars have electric fuel pumps and I put a hidden switch on them. The thief may get it started but he wont make it more then a block when it runs out of fuel on him and I'll guarantee he ain't gonna take the time to trouble shoot the problem, he'll just leave it where it stopped. And this way, when you hear your car start you have the time you need to run the f&*%er down, this is when the pistol or baseball bat come in handy.

Ain't that the truth! The other day I had to hot wire my friend's grandfather's Amigo.

They're Mexican, so I had to give 'em crap that they needed a Pollock to hot wire it for 'em.

I have an phone jack type plug that completes the connection for the coil. I also routed the coil wire so that it is not obvious that it's interupted. Also wired a hidden button into the neutral safety switch so that it wont start unless the button is depressed while cranking. Also have a battery shut off switch under the seat. I don't depend on locking columns... too easy to pop the lock plus the switch is located at the bottom of the column (GM) and easy to hot wire.

Still no guarantee against theft... They can always drag it up on a trailer... assuming they have time.

I remember when those clubs were the rage. They became a challenge to a car thief. They were picking out the cars with clubs and bolt cutting the wheel and leaving the club for the owner to find.
Other than putting in a kill switch or pulling the coil wire, rotor button or whatever your choice is, if they want it and have a roll back or tow truck there probably going to get it.
If its at home thats different. Storing one in my stockade I will put a chain around the rear end and or remove a wheel. Anything to make it take longer for a thief to get caught.
I have nosey neighbors and we all watch each others stuff. If something not right the phone starts ringing.
