So last month my buddy Gil, convinces me I need to buy a 35 ford 4 door sedan that’s on craigslist, (mostly because he wants parts off of it.) So I buy it and plan to lop off the top and make it a phaeton, so when it gets dropped off at my shop its super complete, but the motor is seized. Anyway a couple of days later a customer comes in and asks what new, so I tell him I’m looking for a running flathead for my new 35 ford. He tells me he knows were there’s a motor but its in a boat. The last thing I want to do is get rid of the remains of a boat, so I say I’m not interested. Then he tells me it’s a cracker box. My eyes light up, I jumped out of my seat and grab my copy of Hop Up the first 12 issues, why because it has pics of old cracker box racing in it. And suddenly I need a boat in a bad way. So I meet the 80-year-old man selling the boat, a deal is struck and I am the proud owner of an old wood cracker box. It has a 1940 24-stud motor w/ stock heads, a weiand 2x2 intake and an old Paragon in/out transmission. It also came with another 40 ford motor a set of late Edelbrock heads an Edelbrock 3x2 intake and one late champion head. The price…I’ll never tell. I plan to re-deck the boat this winter in birch and stain it. Then build my 51 f-1 to tow it with. <p>
Dude this is a traditional hot rod and custom site we don't have time for this shit...hahaha Kidding that is cool as hell!
I saw this at the Buffalo Wooden Boat Show last year,...built recently by a young guy using Glen-L plans, did a nice job,...hmmm,...wood is cheap right?

Awesome boat. Will have to dig up pics of ChopPop running his cracker box back in the day. They are a wild ride for sure. Butt busters as they slap down hard on their very flat bottoms. they can also get into what is called, chine walk (even though they have no chines). Pretty easy to get them rocking back and forth from edge to edge of the hull. Scary as shite at speed.
HAMB boat drags! Sponsored by the Kool Kat Klub! First prize...full-size flamed upright base keychain with fuzzy dice.
The model boat is neat, but that's almost the only thing that turns up with a web search. Not much info on the full size boats out there I can find.
I've seen it and it does look cool. Will be kick ass when done. Haven't decided it I want to ask for a ride in it yet. Maybe if we don't go too fast. Seems like it could be kind of scary, but I dig the flathead in it
You got RIPPED off sucker!! The old man should be in jail! Those old Flatheads are unreliable and they run hot. My advice: You should pull the motor and put twin Yamaha outboards on the back.
Looks like someone will be going to Lake Berryessa next summer...lucky stiff. Those boats sure do have nice lines to them. Wooden boats have so much more character than 'glass boats do.
found some videos of cracker boxes. the second one has crashes. I cant wait to die in my new boat.. gup! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-2CnhoY2Ho http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i_L44BlNfI
The wooden boat show in Buffalo is in September around the middle of the month at the Buffalo Launch Club. If you love race boats there is a Race Boat Regatta every other year, hundreds of vintage race boats in Clayton NY.
"I thought all crackerboxes were/are front engined." Your rite, I need to think before posting, I don't mind being corrected! Still the Missile is a nice boat but a waist of a nice motor! .......
Neat.......... I'm down with the HAMB drags or circle racing...... I'm in possesion of a original Rudy Ramos/RAYSONCRAFT race boat. It's actually a original K boat but was later st up for SS racing. I'll have to get some pix up. Paco
