Trends come and go, remember 'red roadsters'? teal, with splash graphic's? black will always be in style no matter what shine it is. Let the dude paint it any color he wants, be supportive, maybe not this truck, maybe not the next truck, but maybe the ride after, just may be full blown, shiney paint and all. I'd go with the John Deer Black, paint the bumpers and all you were goin to paint white, a shiney off white. Good Luck

$80 was conservative, since he kept bitching about how much it cost. Now that I think about it, It was $20 for paint, about that for primer, and $10 for hardener, so $50 is more like it. I don't know where you're getting your $3 spray paint, down here its $5 for the good stuff or $1.17 for the walmart watery shit and not much in between. And, spray paint is water permeable, no way in hell will I invite rust by spending $500 on sheetmetal and saving $10 by buying rattle can paint. Hell, saving $40 is a big deal to me, that's a weeks worth of groceries :D. But I'm not gonna be penny wise and pound foolish, as my dad likes to say, and watch my damn car rot as a result.

Do yourself a favor, give a satin finish other than black. Do it with a flattened single stage paint so you don't have to deal with the bullshit when you decide you want to put different paint on it.

And stay away from the R word.

there is a post about rolling on paint from Rustoleum. It lasts and finished right looks great. I painted a patio table with it and it looks awesome 3 years later. Has a great shine and is as durable as anything out there.

Of course it was easy because it was a flat table... but with some patience you could get it to look good on a truck.

Don't do flat black and scratch that part of your brain out that likes rats... they carry diseases and crap everywhere.

There are a lot of hypocrites on here. People with rides they never drive, rusty primer and fake patina. Its fine to speak your opinion, I helped fight for your right to do that. As some others have stated paint the car what ever color you like. Its your car. When I’m riding with a hot chick do you think she cares if my car is a four door or two door? Do you think she really cares if its one of 100 left. I can care less about what some old dude thinks about my ride. A lot of you guys are the same people at the shows that act stuck up. The first time I saw a satin black 54 chevy coupe I fell in love and now that I own one, it will be semi flat too. I still have a crush on the ZZ top Ford and hope one day to own one with the cheesy lighting bolts! Do what makes “YOU” happy

Yep, $40 savings mean a lot to me, but so does either doing it right or wrong. Sitting there till your finger is sore with rattle cans is not the way to do it, its only going to serve as a front door for water to get into your metal and screw it up. I have done Rustoleum and some other cheap stuff, that protects better, for less than your $36 paint job. I would bet it held up better, took less time and protected the metal a bit more than rattle can. This stuff is supposed to protect metal from Rust. Its even got Rust in the name.

Not trying to be a dick here, really Im not, but that car is what partly makes people cringe at the "rat rod" word. Its utterly confused. A '68 Catalina with rear shaved door handles in flat black with 50s waffle caps and bias ply wide whites. What? Its really not much different than me doing that to an S10 or a Honda. It is trying to be something it isnt.

I could see that on a 54 Chevy or something. Exciting? No. But I could see it. But a 1968 Catalina? That's whack and looks automatically like someone who didn't bother to learn anything about this scene aside from maybe a Rebel Rodz or two.

Man just gloss the bitch. Seriously. In a lot of ways it's easier and results in a far finer car. Rat rod it out with some hideous spiderweb grille or something but spare the body from flat blackness. Please.

Wanna know one of the problems with suedes and flats? Panel painting. You're always chasing different sheens because the average guy at home ain't able to do it all at once like a pro. There will be f-ups and time or money constraints that dictate the end result has been painted on a dozen different days, little here and there.

With a gloss paint, the buffer covers those timeline sins and delivers a knockout finished product. And the end result reflects your time and money investment. The truck's value will reflect it too.

Don't think cause you're young and it's a first paint job that you gotta half ass it. That's starting off on the wrong foot my friend. Go gloss. Good luck.

Sorry to jump in but I figured I could answer this for you.

There are all types of different finishes when it has to do with paint; gloss, semi gloss, flat, semi flat, ultra flat, etc. You are probably looking for the satin look. Depending on your budget I would go with the Hot Rod Flatz it is a great paint and holds up real strong as long as you lay it on right it, and it isn't damaged by sun light as quickly as other flat type paints. I believe you can get the fast kit for around 150 and it comes with everything you need for the paint. The website is www.tcpglobal.com

Good luck, take tons of pics and keep us posted.

93chevy55, Semi flat and suede has more shine than a flat black. Kirker hot rod black would be a satin, semi, suede. Blitz is more of a flat black.

If you're set on satin anything, there are a million right ways to do it along with a million wrong ones. I think what set everyone off is in your first post when you mentioned you were going for the rat rod look. Most everyone on this board is here to help and to learn, and they, we, I will help you learn. But at the same time, we are trying to steer you in the right direction. If you wanna learn the right way to do things, listen to the people who are explaining them and ignore the people who are judging.

I'll mention just a couple things to look up. Du Pont Hot Hues. They make a single stage urethane satin black. Urethane is what they use on production cars today because of how well it holds up. It is the closest thing to "black primer" while still falling into the category of right way to do things. The other is Hot Rod Flatz. They are along the same lines but have an extended line of different satin colors.

Do a search for these 2 names as they have both been covered before. If you want to talk to someone, PM Clark. He is the man when it comes to satin anything. I've learned a bunch from him. Good luck!

Why not just airbrush the whole thing? Even a muraled truck would be better than ANOTHER flat black truck. You've got more imagination and intiative than many ... so be imaginative and use some of that initiative to come up with something that is truly your own and not something that's been beat right into the ground.

Why not just roll it all together and airbrush the ratfink's skull?

Go ask on the Old Skool Rodz board. They like rat rods there.

If you want a flat black truck or hot rod, just get some rattle cans and go for it. If you want "real" paint that's flat, just tell them at the paint and body supply. They can add or recommend flattener.

Hey man, stick around, look around, and learn a little bit. By the time you are ready to paint that truck, you may change your mind two dozen times.

Noooooooo, first you said rats, then....skulls!!!!!!! This site is for traditional rods and customs. If you really like rats, flat black and skulls, go to the Old Skool Rodz board like Kirk says.

On the other hand, go through the years of posts on this site and soak it up. Hopefully you'll be glad you did and you'll use your talent for good, not evil.

    Good luck with it.

p.s.You'll also find the flat black subject has ben thrashed about 2.7 million times. The search function is also really good.
