First off I am a metal newb. Here is a pic of one of the tasks my panel fab. instructor at school has us do. He has a profile pattern and we have to form a bowl to the curve of the pattern. First on the bag and hammer. some shrinking stretching on the shrink stretch machines And then on the planishing hammer. Oh and checking to make sure it matches the pattern. Then when that is done he uses a deeper pattern we have to match to and start the whole thing over again to go deeper on the bowl.

The other stuff is patches for the channel of the rear window on my 1964 Cutlass. Bent on a brake then corners cut then formed to pattern and then using the shrinker stretchers to make slight radius to match car.

Here is one I started today.

I have two '36 ford front fenders. I need to make the front section of this one.
And get rid of the brass.
The other side needs work too. I made a shape pattern off the right fender. Inside out it fits the left.
I made this new toy this weekend. I need it to do the crease down the center. I've been wanting a tipping wheel for a long time to go in the wheel. I have one for my beadroller the throat is very limited.
I have shrinking dies in my truedge machine, and this "stump" to do the stretching.
    Took a hell of a chainsaw:p.

You talking about the Truedge? It is the same style as a Lennox. Mine is a Baker Truedge.

heres what I've been working on
I'm sure most of you have seen it already though
i dont have alot of progress pics
started with a pattern made off an old nose, and a cardboard support to set it on the car, not really a buck as i was making the metal look like what i wanted, not what the pattern called for
this was 3003 h-14 .063 annealed where needed
    [IMG]
next made the chin from 1100-SO .063 and work hardened from there as it was all shaped in one way or another
    [IMG]
started working on ideas for the sides, just 3003 h-14 again, not annealed, no shaping
    [IMG]
    welded it together
    [IMG]
cleaned the welds down smooth after hammering them a bit
    [IMG]
started work on a grill, 1/8" thick aluminum cut with a plasma, welded straight sections on to formed curves
    [IMG]
supports to hold the bars, start fitting them in
    [IMG]
    all tacked together sitting outside
    [IMG]
still needs a TON of work(including redoing the grill i think)...its been tough not going from any pattern, just free forming everything till it looks ok
plus working on a round tube frame has posed problems with not being able to measure square from any given point
    learning alot though

this thread has been very informative

It's a Pullmax style machine. When I got it it had shearing blades. Here is a picture.
It would be equal to a P-3 in capacity I would guess.

That nose looks sweet. I missed the thread if you posted it before.
You have a good eye if you did that without a nose to copy. Looks like alot of hard work that's going to pay off bigtime. I like it.

I can only contribute inspiration. This is my project, but I am not nearly talented enough to have built the all aluminum body.... (eBay).

Brad, thanks for the pics, any more ?

interesting way of building it , lots of smaller pieces and MILES of welding,
did they finish off the welds on the back or just leave them ?

    it looks great

I posted pictures of this body about a year ago, and there seemed to be allot of people who knew more about the body than I do... Basicly the reason it was contructed this way (so i'm told) is becouse it was a mock up for the finished all copper car, "40GT". I bought the thing on eBay to drop over a chassis I have sitting in my garage. Just haven't got to it yet. The body is wrapped around and riveted to the steel tube frame, which is what the doors, hood and trunk are hinged from.

I finally got a chance to read all of the great posts.

    Kerry Monique is looking great!

Abones... How did you make that fender piece? It almost looked like it was stamped but I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

Farmboy... Try that tool that I used to put the wire edge on my fender. It cant hurt to try.It might not be the best way to do it but it works really good.

J.clear...That is one great panel you have made there. You made it look like nothing ever happened. That is really impressive!

INLINE... There is a lot of shape in that tunnel. It really turned out great.

Uncle Johnny... Man I love that hood,I seen it on your web-site,I need to make a new hood for my car.I seen the wire form you made for it.Was that all you used for get the shape of the hood or did you take a flex pattern off of a different hood?

    bardahl1... Great hat

VonMoldy... The only way to learn is to practice.I love seeing new people taking a interest in metal shaping.Keep the pictures and questions coming. From what I see there are a lot of guys here willing to help.I know I will have a few questions.

Dyce...I'm looking forward to watching your progress on your fender.Did you make some contour gauges yet?Are you going to make it in one piece or are you going to split it like a inch over from the peak of the fender.I'm not sure which route I would take.

I made a tipping wheel like yours what did you use for the barrel bearing?

SUHRsc...I can't even tell you How cool I think that is.You made up a design and put it in metal, theres not a lot of people that can do what you did here.I'm with some practice I will be as good as you someday. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!

Brad Fields...I have seen that car before. It is a master piece!!How did they come up with a perfect wood buck like that? Also why do they make every panel in so many pieces? They must have one of the best metal finishers in the world because the end results are incredible.

Keith.Great job as always,Is this what you do for a living?or is it a hobby with benefits?

tisdelski...I always love seeing your work.Have you made any headlight rings?I want some aluminum one's for my car but not sure how to make them.

DocsMachine...That is one hell of a piece of art.Can you show some other pictures of it?I tried to look up your web-site but it didn't work.

Man I love this thread,I can't believe all of the great stuff you guy's have shared.I need to get into the shop so I have something to put up soon.I think my next project will be making my self a new English wheel.

Thanks again everyone and keep them coming.

baseball bat hammer, shrinking dies in homemade recipricating hammer (a luxury, this step could have been done by hand) homemade planishing hammer.

not yet on the headlight ring , i spent my free time last week making glass for my shop truck and will spend my free time this week making pieces for my gigantic (randy ferguson size) e-wheel.

lots of great posts on this thread, wish you guys would post more of these on metalmeet as well as here.

  28. Fenders I've been making in my spare time:rolleyes:. 1910 Maxwell. I need to get off the computer and get to shop and work on those fenders. I got a day off and I need to put it to good use.

Johnny, it's a hobby. The benifit is I work in a factory by day and get to go out to the shop and relax. Relax, I'm out there almost every night 3-4 hours and at least 10-15 hours most weekends if I ain't mowing grass.
