I've been wanting to build something on bags that I can CRUISE with the family on weekends. Right now the only ride I have that can fit the whole family is my 55 and it's more of a race car than anything.

So, I've been thinking about caddy's or sleds and then it hit me.. Build a BURB...

I would love to build a 50's BOMB, but I don't have the CASH needed for that kind full resto , so now I'm thinking something like the ride below.

    Thoughts?

    Chopperman,
I think that's excellent choice for a family type ride, I got a buddy thats building a panel, he's got a couple kids and he's hoping to get them involved with this truck. As far as the bagged part go's, I built a bagged 37 Ford sedan, (ART shockwaves) 6 yr's ago, no regrets, love the ride and the look. I think your on to something, good luck. :D

  5. The one on the left is O.K., needs paint. The other is as gay as two boys in one sleeping bag.

  6. Can't see them on a fat-fender car, so why not?

I love bags. I am currently trying to figure out how to get the econoline on the ground. Bags will be in order for sure.

I suppose it was a little confusing to post this idea in this thread about a fat fendered car. I'll go make a brand new post.

However, even on a fat fendered car, the idea might have some advantages such as:

    1. Less cost. You could use the existing suspension mounts instead of buying new A-arms.
    2. Easier construction. Shock absorbers are used on bag suspension anyway. Why go to all the trouble and re-engineering when you could simply bolt in air shocks?
    3. They take up less room.
    4. They can handle more heat.

Am I missing something? Is there a down side?

Airbags to replace metal springs (coil, leaf, torsion bar) have no sound basis in engineering - ever think about what happens when one explodes at 70 mph and your vehicle dumps on the ground at speed?

Their sole purpose is for the 'Look at my ride - look how cool I am (not)' weenies. It's advertising your lack of knowledge about suspension engineering and a lemming like at***ude to following a stupid fashion statement. Don't forget to put the Maltese Cross tail lights and door mirrors on while you are at it.

And Juice is for breakfast. What's your point?

Good thing some idiot hasnt thought to put airbags on millions of 80,000 lb. tractor trailers, yet. Wow disaster averted! whew. God forbid they get as far as putting them on 60,000 lb dump trucks too! Hopefully when my time machine is finished, I'll zip back in time and sabotage Cadillac, Lincoln, and Chevrolet automobile designs and replace their half *** air ride attempts with wooden blocks! Oh NO! Hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of lives are at stake! All of those motorhomes on the road Please say it not so!

Yep, but those millions of tractor trailers and dump trucks are NOT TRADITIONAL HOT RODS!

I don't know if it's still available, but you could add a row or two of seats for the family. It's a little morbid, but it has tons of potential.

I say do it. The ride quality is great if done right. and the photochop with whitewalls looks good. Bilstein has some shocks out right now designed to work with air bags. They make a world of difference in ride quality. I've been using them a lot lately, and I am impressed with them.

    LMAO!

    You beat me to it.

Weasel - What makes you think that the air-springs currently on the market are not engineered for the application they are being applied to? It's a very simple engineering problem to insure that the bag can withstand the forces it will see. Honestly, I fail to see the problem.

If you can even look under this ^^^^ & the fact that you find bags under there ruins it for you....... you deserve to be disappointed.

I've NEVER seen anything laid out on bags that I though would look better sitting up on springs. Half of the "HATERS" are just jealous that they can't afford to lay theirs out on bags.

Some of you people need to get off your high horses.

so the Ala Kart wasnt traditional? Where do '58 Chevrolets, "57-'60 Cadillacs, and '58 Lincoln Continentals Mark III's fit into all of this?

what about the X-Sonic Bubbletop Corvette that had a hydraulic suspension worked into it? Is that not traditional.

If airbags had been readily available back in the day i know damn well they would have used them.

It's not so much that air bags aren't traditional. It how they are used that isn't traditional.

My Burb used them in a non-traditional way. The front cross member was raised into the frame several inches and the rear had a seven inch kick up. That's why it sat on the running boards.

The Ala Kart used them to set it down a little lower, 57-58 Caddy's used them as load leveler's and the X Sonic used them to get out of tickets with the CHP.

Look. WHO CARES! Build what you want, how you want and enjoy the heck out of it.

As long ans it brings a smile to your face that's all that matters.

Why do these posts always have to turn into these debates. The guy started this post asking about a potential project not about bags being traditional. Nobody is going to change anyone's mind here, so these agruments are an excersize in futility. Get over it.

Well back on topic. Chopperman I think the photoshop version looks awsome and would be perfect for the family. As someone else stated there are some cool wagons out there to look at too.

Good ideal on building an AD burban. Panels & Canopy Express's are cool too. I was in the process of bagging my suburban until an emergency came up which needed my funds a lot more. Still planning to have the ch***is done by the end of the year though.

    Here's some inspiration
