Didn't Norm Ries own the Lick'm & Stick'm gas dragster?

  2. Yes it was Norm's car. My grandpa hung out with Norm and they all raced together from the greater Cincinnati area. After norm totalled out his competition roadster car in the eyes at national trails he was a little hesitant to get back in the seat..

The tree house like coupe was so cool. An era when being a novelity was admired and embraced. The scoop was mounted backwards too if I recall. Some felt it aided in reducing air turbulance and thus helping with atomization of the fuel. What caused the top end crash?

  10. Norm and Glenn Hall had been running that same Logghe chassis for more than five years with many modifications. They were pretty much the first guys to run a clutch flite in their car....The chassis was stressed from being run for so many years and it broke at the motor plate in the traps...almost had a clutch explosion feel...went into the drain ditch and that was it....

Probably playing poker and smoking cigars like always.

Seriously, I met Hubert in 1988 at Memphis (my first race with Etchells and Smith) and over the next couple of seasons I got to see him on a somewhat regular basis. Early in the year (88 and 89) we lived at Jerome Bradford's house in Norcross and as we were somewhat short on wheels to get around in (all we had at the time was an Escort wagon "motel car") Hubert gave me his 87 Chevy short wide to drive. The coolest part of it was the custom paint and the "Georgia Shaker" lettering on the tailgate.

Fire Side Inn was an upscale steak house based out of the Los Angeles Valley. Its owner was a guy who sponsored some sportscars for Bonneville speed trials in the 50's. Many media and entertainment personalities dined at his restaraunt. It would have ben a great papprazzi hangout had such activity been as common then as it is today. Knew a guy who was a teenaged valet. He saw plenty of well known TV/Movie personalties arriving with dinner dates other then their spouses. Whats funny is that many of the antics that todays' tabloid youth enage in where common practices back then too. The difference being that back then they were discreet and not wanting to flaunting it. The fuel roadster class was really being promoted by Lions own CJ Pappy Hart. It served as a bastion for guys whose top fuelers had become outdated. Plop a roadster or coupe shell and bam, a modified fuel roadster. Hart insisted that in return for some fuel money, the racers made full passes, even if a single was being made. He also asked that the car owners present a clean and pretty ride, not some figure 8 looking contraption. The class died out at the end of 1968. Dixon initially ran the class with another Fire Side Inn sponsored roadster. But is was powered by a bored/stroke 327, and antiquated chassis. The above featured car was a state of the art top fueler thateven with the added baggage of a shell, could run the same numbers as the best AA/FD of the era. Dixon didnt waste his time racing the modfied class any more since he could make triple the money with the weekly open top fuel programs.

Leal ran the 65 car in 74 and sold it to Bagwell in 75 (that's when I saw it with "The California Flash" logo still on it with Bagwell in the seat (1975 Summernationals) .
By 76 it was painted blue and white. In 79 Bagwell had the 64 car painted the same combo as his 65 SS/BA and 68 SS/AA.
At Indy in 79 all 3 cars were there, The 68 SS/AA, the 64 car in SS/BA, and the 65 car in SS/CA. I just can't remember who drove the 65 car at Indy that year.

The one name I remember as a driver for Bagwell is Terry Earwood. He drove the MOPARs for a number of years.

Yea, I got to see the "Collector" twice a year, 1st the Winternationals in Feb, then Supernationals at the defunt Ontario Motor Speedway in late fall. I like the use of the shower cap to seal up the air scoop

Owner Gil Hayward debuted the car in alte 64 w/327 Checy and ran it through 1969 as you see here. He was the one to get the fuel altered guys to colloborate and form a circuit that would guarantee a good car turn out when a track booked them in for a show
