283s are great and they last for ever. I ran them at the drags and now I have one on the street. Been playing with them for 40 years. http://members.kos.net/willisb/

Exactly what im trying to say.

I cant understand why so many of you think so highly of a SBC. I mean you think the Greatest Engine of all time should be 53 year old technology, have pushrods, have 7/16 headbolts that go into water and heavily distort cylinders when torqued, distributor that is sealed through the intake, have horrble valvetrain geometry, and the list goes on and on. I like SBC's but to name them the greatest engine of all time is ridiculous.

As far as domestic production motors go, this production year is the best yet: Ford has the Modular motor wich is capable of well over 1200 hp on stock internals, Chryslers Viper motor is insane with variable valve timing (that my uncle developed), GM has the LS7 that is absolutely incredible

That is just domestic production, I didnt even say anything about any of the foreign exotic companies.

The All Time Greatest Engine is being researched and developed everyday at race shops all over the world and none of them are using old technology.

I mean come on guys I like old stuff too, but to say that it is the greatest ever?

Because of what the world did with it. It's the foundation of grassroots american motorsports for the last 25 years.

TGrant, I think you may be very confused...
Perhapse you should re-read the original post, and then double check exactly which web site your currently on.

The original question is "what is THE all-time classic rodder's engine?" and the web site your currently on is the HAMB.

Under the above criteria, the answer is as simple as this:
    #1, sbc
    #2, Flatty Ford
    #3, early hemi
    #4, everything else

So you go ahead and build your '32 with a toyota mill because it's "technologically superior to a 53 year old sbc", but dont expect a warm reception here on this web site.

Flathead would be my first choice as it started a whole new way of life/modding.

SBC for its durabiity (yeah some good some bad) and even though Im traditionalist I have to say the new generation LS series engines are a whole new level of SBC's.

I own a 2003 Mach1 and am very impressed with its DOHC 4.6 engine also.

I personally like the early 283/327/302's but the 350 is the one most referrence to.

This is kind of like one of the great debates..........I mean one can find a flaw or fault with each and every brand. People ask me if Im a chevy guy or?? And I say I like all cars, ford.mopar, chevy and others but only dislike 4 doors. (I know this wont please most) but I would take a 4 door wagon any day over a normal 4 door sedan.
There are only two 4 door sedans I like really, and they are the modern Impala SS (rear wheel drive) and the Mercury Marauder.

What? Are you kidding? You think Greer Black and Perdome, Garlits, Frantic Four, Gotelli, and all the other top fuel cars that would make a 64 car class at Bakersfield were running anything else than good old iron Chryslers? Kids today just don't pay attention in History class.

there are a lot of cool engines but I have to go with 283/327/350 sbc--hard to beat on the street--fast for the $$ and were the engine of choice in the late 50's early 60's--were some hot Olds,Ponchos and Buicks too but a high windin' solid lifter sbc still is cool in a period car
    Just my 2 cents

Did every one forget about the sbc bro the BBC. One of the nastiest and most powerful motors to have ever been factory built. Plus for the most part you can get parts for them at any parts house. Dollar for dollar pound for pound bang for your buck BBC!

The Detroit Diesel makes a strong showing for overall production and uses. A six71 screaming balls out is music. They were designed to be extremely flexible in many ways, rotation, blower location etc.

  21. You might be on the wrong board!

And Alex, that BRM is a stretch for a hotrod engine but that sound gave me the heebie jeebies!!!!! WOW!

  22. AND the Distributor is in the Front!

Yeah... Its way out there. :)

But I knew a Car Guy couldn't listen to that, and not feel something... :D

  24. This debate is about as hopeless as Ford vs Chevy, Paper or Plastic, Republican or Democrat, Boxers or Briefs.

Flathead greatest Traditional Engine in history.
SBC, most common and successful (and I don't really like em, but I'm not stupid)
Let's face it that's the truth whether you want to admit it or not!

Funny, that's what they used to say (sort of anyway) about flatheads till everyone dumped them for Chevy's.
I vote sbc, flatheads ARE cool, but hot rods should be fast too. All things considered, sbc rules.

    WTF?

SBC the world's greatest engine my ass. Please.

If #'s is all there is to it, McDonald's would make the world's greatest hamburgers I guess.

  28. Again, you're misunderstanding. Maybe it's not the best design in the world, but it's cheap, plentiful, and easy to hop up from mild to all out. Something about it must have been good enough to build it the same way for 50 years, and put them in everything from the Chevy Monza to dually trucks. The same basic design got pumped out to 700 or so horsepower in stock cars, and I seem to remember reading that in winged sprinters they get more like 1100 horsepower on an all-out motor. And I can go out and buy a complete running vehicle with one in it for $500, whip a bunch of miles out of it with basic maintenance, and the motor will be going long after the transmission is dead. That's what makes them great.

And that's coming from a die-hard Pontiac guy.

Now, can you make a McDonald's hamburger taste like a good steak?

In hot rodding..SBC of course. In racing also the SBC offered the regular guy a chance to be competitive..even dominate.
In F1..the Cosworth Ford DF series was for years dominate. The Ferrari V12s..
I do not believe anything sounds like a Ferrari V12 at full song.

    A prejudice of mine

The Jaguar XK engine. A small company..winning LeMans 5 times from 1951 to 1957
The Xk engine was produced from 1948 to 1986.

    PS..SBC..!!

Just because so many guys want 'em don't make 'em boring..just like snatch..we all like 'em..and spend a great deal of our life looking for good ones..!
